I was introducing my fifteen year old to some of the chaotic 90s animation i grew up with, and I've just a realization... If and when @criticalrole.bsky.social brings in Sprinkle in the animated Mighty Nein, I hope they put feelers out to try to get Michael Dorn to voice him. IYKYK.

Went walking a neighbour's dog today while they were out all day, and the poor thing wears a cone while she recovers from an injury. And now I'm thinking I need a joke item in D&D, the Ruff of Recuperation. Maybe it recovers Exhaustion faster when you wear it all day, or you get one of the...

Restorations overnight. Perhaps as a bit of humour in a Gritty Realism campaign, it speeds healing when you short-rest--you get max HP per hit die every time, or you get all your hit dice back when you wear it all day. If you're wearing it out adventuring, though, perception checks are at...

disadvantage due to it cutting off peripheral vision and funneling your hearing, and you're more easily flankable. Has somebody already done this?

Important reminders with the school year starting back up and youth adventure groups like Scouting and Guiding and Cadets resuming...

Possibly daft D&D character idea: a hexblade Warlock who regrets their pact and is trying to break it, because every time they use their pact powers, they get 1% closer to becoming fully subsumed by their sword for the same number of minutes.

There are some amazing choices in the thread, but let's see... Lance Reddick, Andre Braugher, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Neil Peart, Richard Dreyfuss (just saw Stand By Me recently)... Fred Rogers? Ernie Coombs? Ian McKellen... Bruce Boxleitner would be interesting. Matt Lillard?

You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?

I feel like stirring the pot a bit. Who's going to win their respective championship first? England in the men's World Cup, or Toronto for the Stanley Cup?

Pope Leo XIV quoted Gandalf from ‘THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING’ in his first encyclical: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set...” #LordOfTheRings #TheReturnOfTheKing #PopeLeoXIV

Who was @joelplaskett.bsky.social's strongest musical influence circa Ashtray Rock and Three and why was it Tom Petty? I'm not complaining! I love both! I was just listening to Full Moon Fever, and half expected Through & Through & Through to come up next.

Adjacent to that, I always get a kick from the passerby telling Uhura and Chekhov where the Alameda naval base is ("in Alameda") was just that, because they were using a hidden camera, and the crew had to chase her down to pay her, give her a SAG card, and credit her.

Halloween III: Season of the Ben@franzferdinand2.bsky.social

What's your "He actually broke his toe here" thing? The factoid you can't help but share whenever it comes up. For me, it's how the punk on the bus in Star Trek IV actually wrote and recorded the song that he's playing because he was annoyed the original song they had didn't sound punk at all.

"Captain, can I PLEASE target their warp core? I have been VERY good this month!"

Picard management tip: Say yes whenever possible, except when your tactical officer recommends attacking.

Nobody tell Wayne. Unclear whether it's 'berta beef, but i still wouldn't pay twenty apiece for top sirloin from anywhere. Berta beef, Japanese Wagyu, Australian Wagyu.

I apologize for putting an ad in your Bluesky, but my Scout Group is starting fundraising for the year, and I'd love to help folks get their gardens started! Just visit the shop (makeitsow.com/seeds/shop/#...) and enter the code KINGSTON_2026 to help Kingston Centre Scouts with our fundraising!

Well now, I spoke too soon about what my opinion of Dylan Larkin was going to be this week. I am... deeply disappointed by everybody on the USA men's hockey team. And especially Dylan.

Matthew G P Coe@mgpcoe.ca

Today? Dylan Larkin can fuck off. Thursday? That'll be a different story.

An oldie but a goodie. I'm sure my parish priest would get a kick out of this.

Sincerely delighted to discover, 45 minutes into this nearly-wordless three-hour documentary about French monks who take vows of silence, that among the reasons they *can* talk is "to make sure the monastery cats know when it's mealtime by making little kitty-calling noises at them."

It is with some hesitation that I admit that it was in the Year of our Lord 2026 that I finally listened to any Joy Division beyond Love Will Tear Us Apart. I'm offended by my own failure in this regard. But, in the same vein as the second-best time to plant a tree being today, I'm fixing that now.

...into it. Don't expect anything in return, just do that good turn because it deserves doing. Set the example for the next person to follow. Be kind. Be considerate. Maybe this feels reductive? But the youth group I volunteer with espouses these values. And it was just delightful to see the... 3/4

...suddenly on their best behaviour after having interacted with him. Definitely goes a long way to show what kind of an influence we can have on others by our mere presence. Sure, Santa's a special case. But if you'd like to see a kinder world, start by putting a little bit of kindness out... 2/4

I double checked the magical number that reflects my relationship with gravity and not my self-worth and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I'd been overestimating it Freedom Units. I'm not sure how I feel about that? Nothing has changed but I oddly feel like fitting in my kilt again is closer.

A humble request to individuals posting job listings: if there is a geographic restriction on where applicants can live, please put that in the job description! Otherwise you will end up wasting a lot of people's time, including your own HR team's.

Do driving tests no longer require three-point turns? Or is it just a thing where I live where they'll cut a giant circle through an all-way stop without signalling, being utterly unpredictable to everyone around them?

How is it that I've lived this long, and been this much of a fantasy AND sci-fi nerd, and I'm only just NOW reading A Wizard of Earthsea?! This book is great!

Had to walk past a couple of families of Canada Geese this morning on my walk. First of all, juvenile geese are not nearly as cute as goslings. They're cute! Just less so, because most of the yellow downy stuff is gone. Also, turns out, geese can growl. And it is intimidating.

I got access to crayons and kraft paper. Of course I drew Trogdor. And then my 14yo showed me his skills of an artist! He wonders who can guess what the li'l guy next to his thumbs-up is. I got it wrong.

Java programmer complaint: after fighting with it for two weeks, I really dislike Observable. I find it much harder to reason about than CompletableFuture. Possibly because I know the CF will happen at most once, and RX and Observable is about setting responses for every time the thing happens.

Is it wrong that I'm getting a strong Evangelion vibe right now? Or is it just because I started (re-?)watching Eva earlier this week? #CritRoleSpoilers

My favourite local bakery and cafe, Pan Chancho, published a couple of cookbooks with recipes that they use in-house, and my partner came home with one of them a couple of weeks ago. I finally got a chance to try making some bread from their pain ordinaire... looks like it turned out pretty well!

The end result: a crusty loaf with a dense, frankly spongy crumb. Possibly slightly underbaked at the bottom? Very light flavour. My partner identified pretty quickly that I'd left out the salt in the recipe, so definitely some better attention to detail is called for for the next attempt.

Finally saw Howl's Moving Castle at the rep cinema near the house. Loved it. After all, it's Miyazaki! But Howl is absolutely going to be an NPC in at least one future D&D campaign. Maybe the PCs will interact with him. Maybe they'll just uncover some of his spells in a library...

Just dropped by the library today to pick up Agency, by William Gibson. Been looking forward to this for a while. Teenage me realized "I have to read everything this guy writes," and so far, teenage me has had good taste. Still glad I got to tell Gibson so when he released Spook Country.

Destroy this myth. Please share if you have visited and researched in a library this past year! RT And give a shout out to your favorite library you have ever visited.

Got the latest Bluesky update? Great! Alas, the developers changed how replies are ordered that, while it will provide for vibrancy flywheels, changes a behaviour you may have preferred. Setting > Content > Threads > Sort replies to a post by "hotness"? No thanks. Chronological for me!

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

I don't think the "Hotness" setting has to be ascribed to nefariousness; Bluesky can be hard for newskies to navigate and that setting can help the site seem livelier, and yes, social media sites need engagement to live. BUT, this doesn't mean the setting can't (and won't) be manipulated.

To be filed in the he-who-laughs-last-thinks-slowest department, I just realized the It's A Wonderful Life is a retelling of A Christmas Carol, with three less ghosts and, instead of the actual Stooge in the story getting the message, it's one of his competitors.
