While I am working harder that ever to boost student belief that they can write, think, learn and generate worthy ideas without LLMs, the Center for Teaching and Learning creates an AI-Nstein.

Well, they violated their own "Don't be evil" policy a long time ago....

Data centers create heat, they create a drain on electricity, they create a lack of water, and they create worthless AI slop that allows students to cheat and Donald Trump to generate images in which he has a waist. What they *don’t* create is jobs. These people are shameless, tiresome LIARS.

One of our heros, @tengrrl.com wasted no time creating a resource repository. Regional groups are forming. Michigan writing pofs organized a symposium scheduled for Aug 12. WAC Clearinghouse offered to support a conference and publish the journals and book series. wacclearinghouse.org/about/cccc 3/4

Seeing the work the writing studies community has accomplished in mere days after its primary professional organization (CCCC) was eliminated reminded me of that cartoon character who never gives up and is always trying something new. 2/4

Hey folks: even if you aren't involved, consider signing this petition in solidarity with your fellow academics? Interdisciplinary translation: this is like if they canceled APSA for political scientists, AMS for musicologists, AHA for historians, MLA for lit studies, etc. etc.

Important petition re CCCC "If you are currently a CCCC member, we ask that you commit to cancelling your NCTE membership should these changes be made." My 8th-grade English teacher collected our hand-written essays on the play, "Raisin in the Sun," and proceeded to rip them in half and drop them it the garbage can. Then, she told us about the"write, rip up, rewrite," process she claimed would make our writing stronger. (1)

You can imagine the protest. There was no convincing me the rewrite was better. I am obviously still resentful (and it happened during the Carter administration). It was cruel and unecessary...in a day and age when parents rarely questioned a teacher's authority...(2/3)

But I am thinking about this after spending 7 hours today and all of yesterday writing a conference proposal. It is all wrong. I have to start over...and I have to get the earlier draft out of my sight. So, I opened a new file. I am sure this round will go faster.

after much deliberation and giving AI the benefit of the doubt, Wikipedia editors have had enough of AI slop. New policy bans LLM generated content, periodt www.404media.co/wikipedia-ba...

"Writers have been using me long before the advent of AI. I am the punctuation equivalent of a cardigan—beloved by MFA grads, used by editors when it’s actually cold, and worn year-round by screenwriters. I am not new here."

Outdoor office temp: 85-degrees. Major road construction one street over. Roofers are executing a tear-off next door, and I wouldn't be surprised if they start shingling before 2 pm. No matter. This is my favorite place to write. #Writingsky, #academicsky,

Comp community: Asao Inoue is keynote speaker this year. This will be my 4th time attending this virtual conference. I recommend. It is so well organized and draws together faculty and administrative across disciplines.

The insanity of being a fire ecologist in the epicenter of a major fire event, bags packed and ready to evacuate, watching active fire from my window, while taking media requests and explaining to the public, for the 100,000th time how climate change is largely responsible for this

The teaching case for AI in the university humanities classroom seems to be: Admit that you hate teaching and don’t want to prepare materials, run classes, prepare or grade student work.” I’d say this was odd and depressing but then a remember “teaching release” is the holy grail of academic success

A 27yo student whose HS counselor told her "college is not for you," did not believe me when I told her she won an award for her writing Showcase presentation. "Come on," she said. "Did I really win or did you do this?" I told her that 5 judges chose her project. She burst into tears. #fywriting

A2: For 27 yrs, I have offered unlimited revision with shadow grades and used the 4.0 scale. I fully shifted to feedback over all grades while in a COP focusing on equitable teaching. I was asked to coach STEM faculty in alt.grading & I realized that I could do better myself! #Ungradingchat

Spent the past 2 days talking to FY students at #UToledo's celebration of public writing. I am always impressed by the learning that happens when they transfer a paper into visual form, but the real reward is seeing them present and recognize that they are doing scholarly work.

You are up to date.
