Writer @naomiaklein.bsky.social says the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is part of a much longer project of privatization. "After 50 years of outsourcing and hollowing out of public functions of the state, the very last stage is the outsourcing of thinking, of intelligence itself."

So that critique is really an unfair jab at 'pulpy' genres, but pulp genres regularly produce surprising great art precisely because they're open to experimentation. That said, I think there is a real divide here between what we might call 'expressive art' and 'functional art.'

Britain doesn't change. I'm rereading Holmes. It's 1887 and the Daily Telegraph speculates that a murder must have been perpetrated by refugees or socialists, and advocates a closer watch over foreigners, while the Standard blames such outrages on a liberal government. It's funny how AI tech bros are all like "soon AI will be able to perform all human labor" and the next sentence is never something like "and that's why we can easily move to a 32 hour work week now."

Technically I have done this too. Buy that mainly as the only.placr for a bookcase is the landing outside the bedroom and I have interesting taste.

I am aware of John Waters comments about not fucking someone who doesn't have books at their house. So, I have worked really hard to curate an interesting, intriguing set of physical books close to my bedroom. I am nearly 60, and I have been happily married for 30 years.

TFW a book ends with an underpowered payoff that doesn't resolve things, followed by an Afterword where the author thanks a friend/agent for suggesting splitting the manuscript into two books and here's a link to buy Book 2. You just sold me half a book. I will never read anything else by you.

OK so to underline. It's always been that every penny of excess that this crowdfunder makes will be donated to someone else's funder. I'm only (!) going for 20 grand, many people need more than that and cannot raise it. Do you have a rich/famous mutual? gofund.me/8c165aa8f

And which is more serious: 1) A silly campus protest 2) Someone said a mean thing Leftishly 3) Armed agents of the state murdering people 4) A political party using the state to silence dissent. (3) and (4) are very obviously a much bigger deal than (1) or (2), not that you can tell from the NYT.

Look, Death Stars exist now, a Death Star is just a tool that people use. If we don't use it to blow up a planet then someone else will. It doesn't matter if you have ethical concerns about Death Stars, it's too late, they exist, you just have to use them now.
