I'm restarting my thread highlighting some of the awesome writing people have been doing in my short humor workshops! The consistently high quality of everyone's work has blown me away & I feel very lucky to have seen so many great pieces develop.

LANSING MENTIONED.

We only get one life, and one of the maybe 80 times I can watch the leaves turn color & drift to the ground is happening now, while I search through data in a spreadsheet to put on a mandated form I have to submit that no one will ever, ever look at other than to check off that it is done.

This song is like cheese on a mouse trap for poets. Oh, how about a melancholy, contemplative tone and lyrics about how we have one marvelous life on one wondrous world? This thing needs an advisory sticker. Don't listen while operating heavy machinery or otherwise can't stare at the trees.

We are moving from "Adam Silver kind of sucks & I hope we get a new commissioner soon" to "Adam Silver needs to get tarred and feathered and tied to the back of a horse who gets whipped and sent out of town."

The NBA has reached deals with Kalshi and Polymarket to make them the league's preferred prediction markets partners. The companies can now use NBA IP on their platforms, while the NBA gets right of approval on markets that they offer. That and more: www.nytimes.com/athletic/772...

Really good win for Detroit. I know guys were out (both ways), but not sure national media thought DET would be 3-0 to start the season, including on the road in PHI and MIA.

There are some people with courtside seats at the Pistons/Sixers game who have as much trash around their seats as I had in the backseat of the old Mercury Grand Marquis I drove to school in 1991.

Some fast food, a lotta Gatorade bottles, a metric ton of gum wrappers, a few Reese's wrappers, oh shit and glass Mountain Dew bottles because I'm old and things were glass still and I should point out I was 17 years old then, & probably 50 returned homework assignments, and basketball shoes.

Look man, I'm too worn out to turn this into a poem right now like I should, but do you remember when you realized you'd never be the scrappy underestimated guy to hit a homer in a World Series? When you started to understand the notion of limits? That you couldn't literally just want it more?

The kids are alright exhibit #9,476,272: I heard two teens after getting essentially a participation trophy for baseball say to each other where they put these things, never to be looked at again. "I have a drawer with all these." "I have a box in the closet." Laughing their asses off.

Get you to someplace today where you think it might be starting to rain despite the blue skies because you hear raindrops before realizing it's leaves falling onto leaves on the forest floor.

I'm happy to report I'm safely on the sidelines now and the guy carrying a shovel on the hiking trail did not bash my skull in with it before using it to bury my body deep in Livonia in a modern cautionary Poe tale about autumnal madness.

Which one of you asked the music streaming platforms to animate the album covers? That's stupid. Knock it off, and please ask them to stop making everything move all the time.

Did I tell you guys about how when my family took a quick trip to Denver this summer to see my aunt, she took us to a Colorado Rockies game (they stink, but they're fun!), and as we were walking back to the train afterward, someone way behind us spotted my Pistons hat and shouted "DEEEEETROIT..."

I have two tweens and this sentence (from Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead) is the single best description I've ever seen of their age

Of the nigh-infinite nefarious & BS impacts of AI, one thing it has taught me is that you all really hated making flyers. I'm so sorry for the pain flyers must have brought you all these years.

A couple times a year, I'll tell myself I should give classical music another try and turn on that one radio station for a while before hearing one chant or opera thing and I go scampering back to Coltrane & them like a toddler who strayed too far from mommy in TJ Maxx.

wondered this about the attacks on higher ed as well, just an inability to grapple with material that reflects on the human endeavor & doesn’t immediately fall into a check the box growth mindset format for stockholders and spreadsheets and instead calls for actual context bsky.app/profile/will...

Genuinely think that one reason for the rise in LLMs is that many people in tech found humanities subjects difficult at school and don’t know how to address that

I can hear the car next to me in the school parking lot listening to talk radio instead of the Pistons, and my good Metro Detroit homie WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
