this is an excellent piece and I encourage all academics to give it a read: it articulates more clearly than I've seen elsewhere the reasons underlying the anxiety many of us in science have regarding the risks that commercial AI presents to the public goods we spend our lives creating

Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why. arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251

A recent study showed 40% of MPs said they had been threatened with physical violence; 14% with sexual violence, and 19% had received threats against family members. This has to stop!

When attacks happen in the US, we say they couldn't happen here. Same with Canada, and Japan, and the UK. Now, an Australian MP has been critically injured in a hate attack. A serious attack will happen here, if we don't act, writes Jonathan Milne.

My publisher has written: our books will be included in AI licensing contracts unless we reply and opt out. What is the point of academia any more? Students use AI to do their work; our work is sold to AI (and we make no profit from it anyway); our jobs are on the line. The whole thing is toxic 😖

Insightful piece here, exposing the limp and disappointing response of police to what is clearly disruptive, illegal and abusive behaviour. Love the words of residents - referring to RTC as trying to mark their territory on lampposts like dogs oxfordclarion.uk/raise-the-co...

As someone who studies official responses to dissent and subversive activity, what's fascinating to me about the situation at Portsmouth is that the authorities don't seem to be responding at all?! Masked thugs en masse but no clear police or government action. 🤔
