The students have won in Serbia, turfing out 12 years of right wing authoritarianism. Lula has just produced an extraordinary victory in Brazil. Trump's numbers are underwater. And they are pedestrianising Oxford street!

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

Lead in the petrol, lead in paint, asbestos in ceilings, single pane windows, no roof or wall insulation, no central heating, no recycling, litter everywhere, no car seat belts, smoking everywhere, physically beaten children, blatant sexism & racism.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Reactions like this are fascinating & very appreciated. Because the idea that we will see a reduction in warming anytime soon is so outside of my expectations because there's very little evidence it will happen. It's wishful thinking. The default assumption should be warming is essentially forever.

Nathan Nelson@nathannelson.co.uk

This has broken my brain a bit. Potentially centuries, not decades, for any return to 1.5° of warming. What is their understanding of the baseline even going to be in 2500? Go back as far in time from now and Ivan the Terrible was conquering the Khanate of Kazan.

"what was being missed [in discussions about climatic overshoot] was the assessment of accumulating damage, not to mention the fact that we already have produced irreversible change — we are never going to get back to pre-industrial Earth system states."

Overshoot into dangerous climate change will not just produce damage, but accumulating damage. That has profound consequences for how we assess climate risk & tipping points. Do not eat farmed fish. That's a very good rule of thumb. And you should avoid most caught fish because of by-catch and other unsustainable practices. Generally try & eat less fish, meat & diary.

Prepping slides for a lecture about causes of mass extinction events of past 500million years. "We are the asteroid" is sometimes said with respect to the impacts we are having on the biosphere. I think industrialised civilisation being equivalent to a super volcano may prove to be more apt.

Reminds me of the time a customer phoned to say their server was down & we told them it was gone. They asked when it will be back up, we said well that depends on when the police will find the van that their server got loaded into 2am earlier that day after a hole was blown into the data centre.

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous - and makes us less secure: undermining efforts to reduce energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, increasing vulnerability to global dictators, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off

Derailment Risk: diverting funding away from emissions reductions to weapons. The worse the climate crisis becomes, the more that political instability flashes over to kinetic conflict, the more this will happen and we will move even deeper in danger.

Anthony Painter@anthonypainter.bsky.social

I don't really know what to say about the fact HM Treasury can't seem to get its head around the fact that heat pump grants are industrial policy not household subsidy. It doesn't signal great depth of policy thinking. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Octopuses sense light with their whole body & taste the world as they touch it. Yet there are few laws to protect them from factory farms. We’re racing to stop this cruel, unsustainable industry in its tracks. ️✍️ Help protect octopuses from farms: https://bit.ly/4hsdaE1

US continues its descent into barbarism. No idea what sort of legal challenges await to try to stop this. Perhaps that's the objective, froth up the outrage and attempt to own the libs.

Progress.

Another take is that the UK used the prodigious oil & gas reserves in the North Sea to fund large tax cuts & stimulate financial trading & services in London & South East England. Once that was spaffed away the neoliberal response was austerity. Compare that approach with Norway's.

Buck Frexit@beany.bsky.social

That 1980s boom he’s talking about is because we sold off the family silver, which lead to decades of the highest energy & rail fares in Europe plus sewage in rivers.. oh and being held to ransom by fat cats warning that if we want anything to improve we need to pay all over again. Fuck off Simon.

One reason for such incompetence is that competent medics must abide by the Hippocratic Oath and so cannot intentionally kill people.

Preparing to give a lecture about planetary boundaries. I say politicians here, but corporate sustainability, media and much of society have very little interest in the other planetary boundaries (noting that their interest in climate often does not translate into actual action).
