Kinda feels like if someone being investigated on rape charges says they don’t “owe” someone they had sex with the truth about what happened to them, they should maybe lose the presumption of innocence. Everybody at least deserves to know what was done to them sexually.

Expensive goods changing hands without consideration is one of those blaring lights you look for when investigating public corruption. It means the giver is expecting something other than money from the receiver.

A great detail in this New York Times story: the Russian diesel under the Trump-Putin deal was shipped without any US buyers having paid for it. Three vessels are now at sea.

little bit of a tangent: i once had a department chair who physically threatened me because the graduate student he was having an affair with was struggling in my class. i ended up resigning a few months later. so dating a student can have far-reaching consequences beyond the abuse of the student.

Attacks on trans rights are attacks on bodily autonomy If you truly have trouble wrapping your head around the problem: Take a moment to consider that anything anti-trans is telling us that people can be told legally by their government that they have no control over their own bodies

besides if medicaid isnt getting enough tax revenue raise the fucking taxes before you foreclose on anyone maybe look into estate tax

Ha ha ha ha… I remember in senior year of high school we had our only required economics course (only half a year!) and our teacher was talking about how even gifts are meant to be taxed. Someone (maybe me?) asked about inheritance, and she said “that’s taxed, too”.

if millennials could afford homes this wouldnt be a problem but this is going to hit the generation like a truck

This was also before the housing and stock market crash, so I wound up feeling guilty about not wanting to pay even more off what I leave behind, or having what little my parents had that would already be split three ways shrink. But I was right, wasn’t I?

Also there was a girl who was in early recruitment for the military who came to class EVERY DAY in fucking fatigues who started shouting at me about how I should “just leave” and had to be shut down by the teacher. I’m pretty sure I just laughed at her, but even more these days: fuck her.

Now, I wasn’t thinking about, say, Bill Gates’s estate. I was thinking about how my parents’ generation was always on about making sure their kids never had to go without the things they went without. My automatic reaction was, “I hate this country.”

Keep in mind this was Bush times, when there was chatter about reinstating a draft. I wasn’t thinking about the 1% — not that they ever have to pay taxes like normal folks anyway. And I generally was about income tax, because schools, roads, libraries…

It amazes me that there are multiple government-run financial websites that I have had to use that have hours set like they’re in a brick and mortar store, as though they don’t understand that information submitted at 2am would still be available to them at 6am and not just escape into the web.

This goes a long way to explaining why US hotel rates rose *58%* from a 2020 average of $103/night to a 2025 average of $162/night. It explains why hotel prices rose by 5% *last year*, which is *double* the rate of inflation.

But to *really* stay in business on Expedia, hotels have to use the VIP program, which is even *more* expensive. And - one more time - hotels in the VIP program have to jack up their prices *everywhere else, INDEFINITELY*.

Let me repeat that: to stay in business, hotels need to be on Expedia. To stay in business on Expedia, hotels have to raise their prices to pay Expedia's junk fees, but they have to raise their prices everywhere else.

Practically speaking, hotels *have* to pay for this, because it boosts booking rates by 42% (the first ten results on an Expedia search-results page get 62% of the clicks). VIP listing is expensive for the merchant - but it's even more expensive for you and me.

Amazon doesn't mind if prices go up, so long as Amazon's price remains competitive. So Amazon imposes a requirement on its suppliers called "most favored nation," which requires sellers to offer their best price on Amazon: pluralistic.net/2026/02/25/m...

For merchants, that is an *incredibly* expensive proposition: 51-60% of every dollar you spend with an independent merchant on Amazon is claimed by Amazon through junk fees, listing fees, commissions, processing fees and other scams: pluralistic.net/2026/09/04/c...

No matter where you shop, you're getting screwed by Amazon. Amazon has found a way to make everything you buy - at Target, at a mom-and-pop shop, even direct from the manufacturer - more expensive. And they're not the only one: Expedia's done the same thing, but for hotel rooms.

Here's Amazon's sleaziest commercial practice: when you search Amazon, the top results for your search aren't the best matches for your queries; they're products sold by the companies willing to pay the most for search placement, in a "real-time auction" that runs every time you search.
