Indeed the frequently accurate stereotype of developing world politics was that the political choices were between different corrupt and patrimonial parties. The USA traditionally avoided this but we now have one patrimonial party; what remains to be seen is if a non-patrimonial one can compete.

To paraphrase Tom Wolfe, we are witnesses one of the great unexplained phenomena of modern astronomy: namely that the dark night of AI-Job-Replacement is always descending on the humanities and yet lands only in math and computer science.
“I’m not sure about your young liberal arts majors. They’re probably screwed. I mean, ultimately, we all kind of are.” In an interview with The Economist, Muddy Waters Research’s Carson Block discusses the AI jobs apocalypse. It's hilarious that Huang things not knowing his address, zip-code and phone number are a mark of how he is cognitively off-loading to technology and Klein doesn't seem to press him that what he's actually obviously doing is using the fact that he's rich to off-load onto other humans.
Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?” Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

I keep seeing this (youtu.be/u5kEbkeX_94?...) channel recommended to me on YouTube and it is just so frustrating because its purporting to use history to advise worldbuilders but it is just...off. Relentless autodidact problems where things are misinterpreted or misunderstood.

So, where this sort of 'real talk' falls a bit short for me is that this 'glut' coexists with the easily observable fact that most departments have more than their share of indifferent teachers, mediocre researchers and straight-up abusers, protected by the social rules of the tenure track.
I know what adjuncts make, and it is scandalous. But that’s because the market is glutted with PhDs - including people who should have either abandoned the PhD or abandoned the idea of a teaching career. I know that sounds cruel, but that’s real talk.

So obviously this is just racism, when he says 'dirtier' he means 'less white.' But, like, also anyone paying any attention at all - America is richer and cleaner than it was in the 1980s when I was born. Like, come the fuck on. Y'all remember the smoking section at a McDonalds? Gross.

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.
That said, I think at this point, we can conclude that fascism is a latent political force in basically every country, to a greater or lesser degree and so you need to be thinking, "what if my country goes fascist? what if a neighboring country does?" and plan for how to avoid or deal with that.
