Hi, I spent 10+ years researching all sorts of PC RPGs: AAAs, indies, RPG Maker, non-English, etc. Together with 167 volunteers, I created/edited The CRPG Book: crpgbook.wordpress.com You can download it for free, or buy a hardcover edition from Bitmap Books - ALL author's revenue goes to charity!❤️

Great chance for people to finally check Dark Messiah! store.steampowered.com/app/5016100/... It's a bit messy but it's Arkane setting the blueprint to a lot of what people love in Dishonored. Some battles and set pieces still feel cutting-edge, even 20 years later.

People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections. 5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs. For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.

People across the world are rioting & protesting against the rise of fascism, tech oligarchs and imperialism. It's a global battle, our WW3. But we Brazilians are very lucky, we fight alongside an old titan that's on the level of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Lenin, Ho Chi Minh, Ghandi, etc

While we're all sad for BioWare please remember video games are a vast medium that goes far beyond commercial products. Years before BioWare people were already making extremely gay & horny games. This is a normie-ass magazine from 1994 and already has a whole section about sex & furry MUDs lol

Here's some deep lore about video game history: you can directly connect the earliest years of Western RPGs, Online RPGs AND Japanese RPGs to a single name: Dr. Cat

Felipe Pepe
@felipepepe.bsky.social

My heart & mind are consumed by Brazil's elections, but a quick pause to pay respects to BioWare. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Neverwinter Nights are pillars of CRPGs, extremely formative games. KotOR, Mass Effect & Dragon Age redefined RPGs for the modern era. Fuck EA, the people there deserve better.

Felipe Pepe
@felipepepe.bsky.social

I keep thinking about the massive impact BioWare had in the CRPG world... Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, KotOR 2, The Witcher 1 and NWN2 run on tech from BioWare. NWN1 was the birthplace of countless game designers. Love for "Infinity Engine-like" RPGs fueled the Kickstarter CRPG revival.

Felipe Pepe

Anyway, let's celebrate the people who made all this happen in the past 30 years, not a faceless corporation Can't recommend enough checking out the 25th Anniversary book they put out in 2020 - it's gorgeous, has the cancelled games, and ends teasing DA: Veilguard, so it's their full story really.

Felipe Pepe
@felipepepe.bsky.social

Resharing this because it's such a formative memory... To most people BioWare means Mass Effect / Dragon Age, but NWN was revolutionary - the "Western RPG Maker". It's the only entry on the CRPG Book with 4 pages, because 2 are just about its Aurora Toolset. Hell, we have The Witcher because of it!

Felipe Pepe@felipepepe.bsky.social

For a *slightly* older one, I must have watched the original Neverwinter Nights trailer a hundred times: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ekO... This came with the Baldur's Gate II CDs, it was mindblowing to imagine BG2 in 3D with new ruleset PLUS AN EDITOR!

I like how these games are breaking out of Roblox & mobile into the same stores & platforms as "core" / AAA gaming. AAA games are often stale products that claim relevance simply for being the biggest games around, but this makes it clear that no, they aren't - not even in their home turf.

Why do we keep on doing this? Praising a 'small core team' for a game with 1100+ people in the credits is incredibly misleading. This PR narrative hurts, hides the massive shadow workforce of outsourced developers and testers, and sets impossible standards for actual indie teams.

GamesIndustry.biz@gibiz.bsky.social

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg
