Because of my spinal injury, I was thinking that I wish I could have upside down belaying glasses so that I can hold a book or phone comfortably again and...this product exists, and is really inexpensive! They're called "lazy glasses" or "crochet glasses". Now to find out how well it works for me.

A key catch is that these slightly minify objects (or maybe you hold them further away). They're good for large crafts and OK for reading and laptop but I needed a larger font. Weight on the nose after about 30 min is an issue if upright. I wasn't brave enough to try it for cooking or other cutting.

I've switched to a pair with a smaller FOV but that is much lighter and that's my go-to way of using a laptop or phone in the car or in bed. I can use them for hours now. It is a little awkward with reading glasses but very doable and saves the neck completely.

A brand new website to celebrate 10 YEARS (!) of beautiful markdown documents with Markdeep: casual-effects.com/markdeep/ Same efficiency, 100% data privacy, and client-side processing. New agentic AI support, fancy CSS styles, and compatibility for a seamless document experience.

Note that Markdeep doesn't *use* AI at runtime or capture user data. The new AI support is features for the kind of markdown that Claude, GPT, and Gemini LLMs and agents produce and supports Cursor, Windsurf, and VS Code IDEs. Markdeep + LLMs is a great match that just got even better.

Every lens leaves a blur signature—a hidden fingerprint in every photo. In our new #TPAMI paper, we show how to learn it fast (5 mins of capture!) with Lens Blur Fields ✨ With it, we can tell apart ‘identical’ phones by their optics, deblur images, and render realistic blurs.

My lab will be recruiting at all levels. PhD students, postdocs, and a research engineering position (worldwide for PhD/postdoc, EU candidates only for the engineering position). If you're at SIGGRAPH, I'd love to talk to you if you are interested in any of these.

I put a massive number of changes in today's release of the new version of the #quadplay retro fantasy video game console. Available now at: morgan3d.github.io/quadplay/ The main focus of these changes was mobile: new aspect ratios, new battery saving optimizations, new exported game UI options.

20kts of wind makes for a lot of miles put away! I just marvel at the free energy of wind and current--I'm moving my *home* around with minimal effort, cost, and environmental impact, while sitting here making a sandwich and coffee enjoying the ride. #sailing

matklad.github.io/2025/07/16/f... convinced me to try the "font-size-adjust" feature — it's now live on redblobgames.com . I'm using it to to keep the body text and code (monospace) text matched. caniuse.com?search=font-... shows Firefox (partial) support started in 2008, Chrome in 2024.

matklad.github.iofont-size-adjust Is UsefulIn this article, I will describe a recent addition to CSS, the font-size-adjust property. I am also making a bold claim that everyone in the world misunderstands the usefulness of this property, inclu...

Nowadays, most scientific papers must include an ethics declaration, about potential conflicts of interest among the authors. I just found this ethics declaration, in a paper written in 1729 : "I Profess, in the sincerity of my Heart, that I have not the least personal Interest

I retired 5 years ago at age 67. I feel that is when my “real career” began. I have never been more engaged, productive, and fulfilled. It was incredibly liberating to decide I could switch to working for no salary: no boss to argue with and working purely on topics that inspire me. It is magical.

It’s been 3,174 days since I escaped corporate life. I was 44. My children were tiny. Now they're teenagers. Today I turn 53, and we are infinitely happier here, in our farmhouse by the ocean. No more meetings. No more commute. If I can escape, you can too (because I'm a dumbass). #Life #Art

More beautiful BC hiking in provincial island parks this weekend. Native arbutus/madrone trees that shed their orange bark are a distinctive fixture on these shores.

I'm used to having these islands to myself in the winter. Warm weather brings company. Ten other boats are squeezing into this cove. It is affirming to see everyone politely helping others to anchor safely and securely, lending a hand, gear, or advice. The cruising community is great.

Too much of my boat storage is for shoes! Hiking boots, offshore boots, ankle sailing boots, reef shoes, slippers, slides, sailing sneakers, shore sneakers, hip waders, and lightweight summer sailing sneakers. And I still have nothing "nice" to wear on shore for socializing... #sailing

This is a long shot, but someone sent me email about a performance issue with a negative lookbehind regexp in Markdeep and now I can't find the email to follow up. If that was you, please email me again :)

It was quite peaceful at this anchorage (and charming, including a tiny working commercial fishing dock). However, the names on the chart of Skull Rock, Massacre Bay, and Victim Island reflect tragically violent histories of tribal warfare among the Salish peoples in the area ~150 years ago.

At a mooring, enjoying the evening on Meridian. We've had an unexpected amount of wind lately in the Salish sea (from corresponding huge barometric pressure changes) but otherwise mild weather and mostly clear skies. #sailing

Annual reminder to self: "My single threaded code can't have race conditions!" Does it use a clock? Poll input devices? Read from files? Send network packets? Then your code is mulithreaded. You just can't see the source code for the other threads. It *can* have race conditions and deadlocks.
