The #Crew96 have changed coaches in the middle of a season five times: 1996, 2001, 2005, 2013, and 2026. I got curious to see how the team's fortunes changed across those seasons, and this chart is the result.

This whole thread. Change is possible, even against really daunting problems with high stakes. It isn't easy, for both technical and political reasons, but it _is_ possible. (Posting to remind myself, as much as anyone else, that fatalism does not align with our lived experience.)

The 5-year cancer survival rate is up to 70% SIDS deaths have decreased by over 50% 89% decline in tornado deaths All thanks to federal investment in science and OUR tax dollars at work!

Got a chance to feel like I was back in studio this week, working on a sewing project for YoungMorphosis. The goal was a surcoat, so pretty simple (no decorations or emblems), but making it still got us to make five different fabric prototypes to figure out how we wanted to do different connections.

So if I'm following along correctly... A Zacharia is a demi-Scaramucci, and a deca-Truss. A Scaramucci is a bi-Zacharia, and a quinti-Truss. A Truss is a deca-Zacharaia, and a penta-Scaramucci. Yes, these units don't all align. I'm using an Ingrassia as my margin of error.

There's been a lot of momentum to ban anonymous crawling and scraping, as web providers struggle under traffic surges. But anonymous crawling and scraping is the backbone of a HUGE amount of internet activity--everything from investigative journalism, to price comparison tools, to basic cybersec.

Re:Create Coalition@recreatecoalition.bsky.social

Journalists have used web scraping for 20+ years to expose corruption, track lobbyists, and reveal discrimination. Crawler bans like the Stealth Bot Prohibition Act risk cutting off tools newsrooms use to hold power accountable. Our infographic explains why ➡️ recreatecoalition.org/infographic/...

Just left an Astronomy on Tap event, hearing a talk about exoplanets (history of detections, details about methodologies behind the process, what each method can tell us, etc) I freaking love hearing smart people talk about their fields. More of that, please!

To lose visitors in the year you HOST THE WORLD CUP and celebrate a big anniversary is truly incredible.

Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” www.semafor.com/article/09/2...

I've seen a ton of AI dev stuff to the effect of "here's my personal toolchain, model selection, etc." but much less to the effect of "here is how our team uses AI and still achieves PR review / does shared architectural thinking / avoids cognitive debt". Is anyone writing on that?

Call 'em out, coach. I'd particularly love to see the phrase "bring the game into disrepute" when you do. There are dark arts, and there are clowns. Miami was the latter in this game, IMO. It was cathartic to watch #Crew96 win.

Charles Boehm ⚽️@cboehm.bsky.social

Crazy game in Columbus tonight - drama and real bad blood between the teams. Via @bensteiner00.bsky.social, Crew coach Laurent Courtois was sharply critical of Miami gamesmanship postgame: "I would be red carded after five minutes against those guys. What they do is bad for the game, and it's sad."

This is the rule interpretation I'd support. Delaying a restart is a yellow card already, so why not the same standard when an entire team delays kickoff? Either allow the kickoff with only one team on the field, or caution those who delayed the game.

Scott P@scott--p.bsky.social

A delay of game yellow card to every player late out of halftime would end miami’s nonsense pretty quick #crew96

I am once again fascinated by what manages to become The Topic Of Today's Conversation on this platform. Not in a bad way, just in a "huh" way. (Or maybe there's more than one topic, and I'm just seeing a lot of people talk about one thing among a sea of ongoing conversations)

Probably the biggest game of the season for #Crew96 (so far). The team hasn't won the Open Cup since 2002, and this is currently our last hope of any sort for a trophy.

Throw-back Thursday to an article that my team at work read together during the pandemic, and I think is worth returning to. Understanding one's own caucus score (there's an instrument in the article for this) has helped me to calibrate how often I'm speaking in meetings versus listening.

I'm not the only person who cringes every time the ChatGPT commercial comes on in an #MLS broadcast with the elderly woman who appears to have an entire conversation with the tool, not realizing that she isn't talking to another person - right? This feels like a confidence con as a service - right?

I'm always surprised when #Crew96 name two backup goalkeepers on the game day squad. Particularly when there are folks like Herrera and Sejdic who get left off. At least Thiaré is back on the bench for the first time since before Leagues Cup.

All sorts of firsts as a result of this achievement, IIRC: - first orbital launch from Isar Aerospace (German startup), and thus also the first for its Spectrum rocket - first orbital launch from European soil (Andøya is in northern Norway), also means a new launch location online.

Jeff Foust@jfoust.bsky.social

Isar Aerospace reports the second stage of Spectrum achieved a 180 x 500 km orbit (preliminary figures) on today's launch.

I'm all for dunking on ill-advised uses of language models - and this certainly qualifies. But "AI can't do that" isn't really the framing IMO when the hikers - twelve hours into a planned eight-hour climb - decide to keep ascending without consulting AI. That's a decision you own entirely.

krcrtv.comThree Mount Shasta climbers rescued after relying on AI to plan climbThree novice climbers were rescued from Mount Shasta on Sunday after becoming lost, running low on supplies and spending an unplanned night in Mud Creek Canyon,

Your use of a language model may have meant that you didn't bring adequate supplies with you. It _might_ have meant that you didn't bring a paper map. But when your phone dies, the backup charger doesn't work, and you still keep climbing? Nope - that's not a discussion about your use of AI.

Just finished my second election as a ballot inspector. It was a long day (setup started at 6AM, polls closed at 8 PM and I didn't finish my cleanup until after 9 PM) but very, _very_ worth it. I cannot recommend getting involved highly enough.

I wonder when the last time was that #Crew96 has named _two_ reserve goalkeepers to a game day roster for league play. Given that Camacho is _not_ on that roster, that feels ... significant. He's either unavailable through injury, or _really_ out of favor at the moment.

Something else that sticks out to me: With the transfer of Gazdag this week, and Chase Adams playing for Crew 2 this morning, our most experienced option at forward for this game is: Josef Martinez, with 150 minutes of action as of kickoff this afternoon.

#Crew96 look more dangerous against the leading team in Liga MX than we have against most MLS teams in the last two weeks. And yet we're down 0-1, have seen a penalty kick saved, and Schulte has twice needed to pull out highlight reel stops.

#Crew96 have absolutely zero pressure going into this game against Club America. Every other MLS team has gone out, two of them by shutout. I have no idea whether the players know this, but I kind of hope they do. No fear, just go play the game.

Things I'm curious about: - whether Habroune stays on the left side, or floats around while the team plays asymmetrically; - how Martinez does in his first start, and how he combines with Lennon; - whether we see Bailly or Tapia at all.

I made one change to Greg's definitions, because I was born in Iowa and lived there until I was two when my family moved to Ohio. I'm counting it, but without that stay Iowa would be in "passing through". In putting this together I realized I've never been to Vermont. Going to need to change that.

Stayed in more places than I thought, but also feel undertraveled 😂 My definitions – ➡️ Lived: driver license or voted there ➡️ Stayed: 3 or more nights ➡️ Visited: 0-2 nights ➡️ Passed through: airport / car only (including car rest stops) ➡️ Never been: no ground touched whereidlive.com/s/e5tn57kv

I've "stayed a while" in more places than I would have thought - thanks in part to work conferences, national speech tournaments in undergrad, and some really cool trips I've taken at times. I feel pretty fortunate, seeing it laid out like this.

In the last four games, #Crew96 have earned one point and conceded ten goals. When is Bailly going to be available for selection again?

I'm glad that #Crew96 got Gazdag and Giaccone on the field rather than parking the bus with a late lead - but there's also part of me that was morbidly curious how it would go to give Christopher Rogers a professional debut under these conditions.

I note with some shock and no small amount of surprise that, shortly after posting this, #Crew96 now enjoy a 2-1 lead, having taken two shots on target.

Matt@morphosis7.bsky.social

In saying this, I note that the Crew have a single shot in the entire game. One - and that wasn't on target.

#Crew96 have intercepted a fair number of passes in the Nashville defensive third - but they've yet to come close to capitalizing on those chance.

It turns out that going for a two mile run-walk in the evening and trying to push myself during the "sprint" portions is a good way to work through the frustrations of watching my sports team lose a game.
