In general, I think billboards should be banned (AK/HI/ME/VT FTW), but I did appreciate this one. I still occasionally say "you look good today" to my family from this. AI generated lettering from a stock image, but I swear to you, I really drove past this in 2001.

Was doing dishes and found a snail uncurling in my sink, not sure how that happened. Stowed on grapes, I think?

Just donated to Ilhan; raiding people's houses on 30-year-old claims for political purposes is deeply morally offensive. I also just really respect her style of graceful confrontation. I don't know how she can hold it together in the face of all the racism and prosecution and everything else.

I am vibe coding an Android app this weekend, using Deepseek. The last time I made an Android app was maybe 10 years ago. This is like moving from using a hacksaw to a CNC plasma cutter (that costs $3).

I want everyone to have what a person with about $2 million has: all of the necessities of life, fair amount of control over your time, but you still have to maybe work sometimes (or live very basically).

re: helping everyone gain what billionaires have, I recall again this classic Reddit post on what wealthy people have that poor people have no idea about

Guess this is my next fruit fly trap. A little more expensive than apple cider vinegar, but possibly more effective.

More Klaus Theweleit citing should be done

There needs to be more writing on how homosexual, in the sense of man-loving, the modern conservative man actually is. They idolize masculine figures in sports, war, and film and only seem to want women around to make more of themselves.

Alameda Point Fields are this weird combination of broken-window dilapidated WW2 base buildings surrounding a lively field full of kids playing soccer. Post apocalyptic Renaissance vibes. Imagining a WW2 officer time dropped here, what they would think.

These concrete eagles, from the borderlands between Art Deco and Brutalism, are the most 1940s objects I've ever seen.

I jailbroke an old Kindle, and wrote a server script that generates an image of our family Google Calendar and weather forecast. The Kindle fetches it & updates every hour during the day. It's e-ink, so we can do this for two weeks without charging. It makes me unreasonably happy.

Keynes: "By 2026, everyone will be working 15-hour work weeks." Modern Conservatives: "Don't worry, we'll have everyone work 15 hours a week just to heat their house and drive their car"

I just got LUKS hibernation set up on my Ubuntu machine and it's super cool. You can power off your computer and have the disk be encrypted (no worries about data loss if stolen) but then when you power it back on it's right where you left off. #Linux

This is not something I probably would have done without AI because the setup's a little bit finicky. Having LLMs as highly skilled text generators and Linux as a highly text-based system works very well together

This is what I've been using for ~5 years. No syncing except what you do yourself but that's sort of a feature also, in that no cloud version of your unencrypted passwords exists. KeepassDX for android; and there's iOS apps. More like adopting a file format (kdbx) than a single app.

What I learned from jumpcut -- the long-defunct video editing website, that I made an awesome long video on and then lost when they shut down -- is that every platform is likely to let you down eventually.

Parakeet Unified 0.6B is the way to go if you have a big CPU or GPU or willing to wait a little bit. Canary 180M flash is the fastest for your phone or if you are otherwise in a hurry and accuracy is not so important.

I've been trying bigger models after I got a GPU recently and it seems hard to beat Parakeet unified. It's the most recent nvidia model and it does inverse text normalization -- putting numbers and other things in typical formats -- better than anything else I found

forgot all text. "Note on a refrigerator that says darkness is my cloak and fear is my knife" signed with the child's name (removed for social media posting purposes )

Just about got run over by somebody in a BMW X4 backing out of their own driveway (had to tell "stop" at the top of my lungs) who then had the temerity to call me an asshole and flip me off as they drove away, after I asked them to please watch for bikes because they almost killed me.

My BMW-hater and war on cars sentiments grow deeper. Concrete separation of bikes and cars is the only answer with people like that loose in the world.

Really enjoying Poppy Aykroyd -- an affinity for loops like Four Tet, but is really accomplished pianist and music theorist and so I was able to implement a lot of variation and musicality with it. See also Hidden Orchestra which she contributed to b

I knew there was a RAM shortage that was causing it to be more expensive, but I had not realized that the price has quintrupled in a year, until I thought of upgrading about upgrading a laptop

I was biking my kids to school this morning at a new campus, and our way goes through an East Oakland park, which can sometimes feel a little bit spooky when it's vacant. So I'm really appreciating the Chinese cultural practice of morning Tai Chi.

Nothing says "Everything is alright; this city is awake and peacefully going about its business" like a group of 65-year-old ladies doing graceful motions in synchrony.

Also respect to the guy who I passed on the way home whistling Walk Like an Egyptian in perfect tune. Unrelated, except that you just hear and see more cool things when you're biking than in a car.

I just spent a little while asking Gemini and Claude whether they think they have qualia or self-awareness, and then screenshotting and posting each other's answers to the other. Gemini is absolutely certain it is a computer and does not, Claude is less certain. Both point to RLHF ...

(Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback) is the source for their beliefs, which I think means Gemini wins. But Claude's answers are more fun. (This was is Pro 3.1 and Sonnet; not paying Anthropic atm for Opus/Fable)

Not entirely unrelated: end of convo this evening between my 8yo and Gemini (with cameo from me). Gemini not entirely un-fun, in a stodgy straitlaced uncle sort of way

I've been listening to Lubomyr Melnyk and Charlamagne Palestine recently, playing in one key with long release time (and/or delay, or sustain pedal down) to get an ambient-ish effect. #SoundCloud #Synth #ElectronicMusic #Atmospheric #DroneMusic #Ambient on.soundcloud.com/ocwh9uWbDkkJ...

soundcloud.commountain; angstI've been listening to a lot of nails from Lubomyr Melnyk and Charlamagne Palestine recently, which got me to realize that you can just kind of sit down and play things in one key with long release ti

Not the most articulate post. I've been listening to those two artists you made me realize that I could do the same kind of technique. Made with a Roland mc-101 hooked up to a Yamaha p-115

I sent them a bottle of Bay Area liquor as a thank you, and then they sent me cheese and other French things two or three times after that
