the most infuriating part is every time I see one of these "lol I'll beta read or do a full structural edit on your manuscript if you buy me a hot dog 🤗" posts, they are always without fail selling themselves in contrast to AI and playing a tiny violin about how hard AI makes it to get paid

another day another bsky ad offering "development editing or beta reading" for no charge except donations. I'm going to become the joker. imagine someone offering "custom character design including full body turnaround sheet with costume reference, or OC sketches" for $0+tips to 'build a portfolio'

either you have no idea what you're doing (and you are going to leave your clients with a completely misleading idea of what the service is and what it's worth) or you're intentionally fucking your peers in a skilled industry that's already under pressure

I got too mad at computer and went offline all day, and as a result designed a whole game system. computer truly holds us all back.

this php thing is driving me up the wall, nothing works and everything takes 10x as long as it should. how many of these internet wide outages do we need to go through before services figure out low tech fallbacks for things like 'log me in' or 'download one word document'

I don't want to point to anybody specific for what I hope are obvious reasons but it really alarms me how often I see people advertise indie editing and feedback services that way way way undercut industry standard minimum rates. that's not good for you or your clients.

the frequency with which I see people offering unlimited unpaid consultation as part of a heinously low balled editorial package is also really alarming. if you offer followup, it has to be defined and limited from the outset. and you should not be offering addon freebies of any kind.

editing, especially quality line editing and developmental or structural work, is intensive and time consuming. if you think you can afford to charge clients less than half(!) of industry minimum rates, you are either not giving yourself time to do good work or cartoonishly undervaluing your skills.
