the Internet Archive thing is an example of the fascinating trend recently where people consuming products they’re not paying for seem to believe they also have the right to dictate how much human labor is spent producing them.

"Libraries should be open late as an alternative to the bar" is going around some groups I'm in again and I just Y'all can't convince enough people to fund libraries to be open during the day with reasonable pay and expectations Where do you think you're finding night shift premium pay money

Bluesky was bumming me out. So I created a ChatGPT Site that pulls my feeds, sorts for importance and personal interest and summarizes it so I can read for 3 minutes at a time instead of get sucked into doomscrolling.

Probably not the absolute first, but the one that comes to mind: a History Channel documentary my dad fell asleep to about executions that had gone wrong. In particular, a story about an electric chair execution in Florida in the 80s that lit a man on fire.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

There was also a 20/20 segment about modern exorcisms that had me staring at the ceiling all night. Maybe about 10 years later, I found that segment on a VHS tape at a friend’s house. Freaked me out all over again—this time, because it was much clearer that it was about abusing schizophrenics.

At this point, I will be long dead before the shushing stereotype dies out. When I was in library school 20 years ago, that was already not a thing.

"Librarians are defenders of democracy. We’re defenders of the freedom to read. We’re protectors of patron privacy. Libraries are one of the few places in this surveillance economy that are not trying to collect and sell your data." www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Hey Dems. Please just hire all of the short-form documentarians out there. They’d appreciate the work and they’re more effective communicators.

Last month, we refurbished 10 tennis courts in Crotona Park — the only public tennis courts in the Bronx with lights for night play. We stopped by recently to see how things were going. Thank you to NYJTL, USTA and Yonex for helping us deliver high-quality public spaces that New Yorkers deserve.

I have so much shit to do today and all I want to do is turn my brain off and watch some trash like Congo (1995).

I shared this image four years ago, two months before ChatGPT was released. It’s from The Actual Star by Monica Byrne, published five years ago this week. Given everything that’s happened in the last five years and current discussions today, I’d say it a bullseye.

Ed “I take public transportation to the Oscars” Begley, Jr.? That’s who the Russians decided would be a good celeb to flip R?

Brandy Zadrozny@brandyzadrozny.bsky.social

Get in, folks: a new Russian disinfo campaign is targeting the midterms, specifically Democrats, in what seems to be the first attempt by the Kremlin-backed op to meddle in this year’s U.S. elections. They're faking celebrity videos attacking Dems and are...very stupid. www.ms.now/news/russia-...

You eschew any use of the actual tools, ignore all academic research, refuse to read anything about neuroscience of mind or its connections to the long, storied history of AI research, don’t understand what a transformer model is, and expect to somehow have a good take on AI? Get real.

As a leftist who has both 1) read a lot of philosophy of mind stuff and 2) personally done deep academic research in machine learning I promise you that your reductive takes on AI having no chance at “real” intelligence or even sentience in the near future (decade or so) are flat out uninformed.

“I have complaints about implications for labor and capital therefore I chose to completely reject an entire field of applied science as invalid under my worldview” is so tedious and it makes people who are experts and otherwise might agree with your concerns gag and withdraw. What’s the point?

Like, being a cookie cutter leftist rejecting the significance of AI systems wholesale in 2026 means just freezing your understanding of technology five years in the past and frankly it’s a really dumb look. I don’t care how cool it sounds at punk shows and parties. It’s anti-intellectual and wrong.

You don’t have to buy industry hype about AI to take like a few weeks to read some papers and realize that in terms of algorithms and the 70 year program of research in artificial intelligence we are on the cusp of something truly transformative for computing and society. Think for yourself.

While sharing this elsewhere, I ended up finding out that he was in not one, but *four* Victor Salva movies. Ummm.

Jesus. CNN says Trump "allies and advisers privately speculated that Harp was responsible" for posting that racist video that depicted the Obamas as apes.

My silver lining read of this is that *museums* make double the film box office and almost as much as live music. Good job, museums!

In honor of this, I started a new Letterboxd list of movies where I thought I put on the wrong movie because the opening scene is so wildly different from what I know about the movie. boxd.it/Wjvou

boxd.itIs this the right movie?Movies whose opening scenes are so wildly different from what I understand the movie to be that I wondered if I put on the wrong movie by mistake.

Here’s my two silver lining takes: Netflix is a better tech company than creative studio, so Letterboxd would be better situated there. Also, Netflix has a finite number of subscribers and they won’t put up with rate hikes forever, so diversifying into related areas would be a good thing.

I ended up getting Taco Bell for dinner because of this thread and all of the commenters talking up the $5 Luxe Box. Fed a family of four for $20 and got way more food than we normally do for $30+.

My kids’ school district uses Schoology, which is…fine. In an effort to get keep everyone on task this fall, I’ve decided to make a little app that sucks in Schoology data and displays it in a little dashboard app that I will have running on a Google Nest Hub in our kitchen.
