Making this my main personal/mouthing-off-about-stuff social account moving forward, LinkedIn for professional anodyne stuff. Still with an edu bent as that's my lane, but this is more just a nice community now. Old teacher twitter is gone and not coming back.

A masterpiece by @daisychristo.bsky.social. Only thing I'd add is changes being proposed are only possible because we have rising standards. Once they drop (and they will) behaviour worsens and we get a crisis and return to sense. How much damage first? substack.nomoremarking.com/p/why-are-we...

We have jobs. A newly created Pupil Welfare Lead, my replacement as Headteacher and Classroom Support Officers (TAs). If you want to work in a school that thinks hard about complex things and then delivers for the pupils their families and the staff who work with them, then take a look. 👇

I naively read news coverage of David Bell's recommendations for tackling anti-semitism in schools yesterday and thought 'that sounds positive', but of course there's been a big backlash. So I read the report, which bends over backwards to be very reasonable, and explicitly preempts the criticisms.

Do read it. Importantly, it also explicitly says lots of its recommendations rightly and usefully apply to all forms of prejudice and discrimination, whilst maintaining that (again like all forms of prejudice) anti-semitism has its own unique characteristics. It's a good step forward for schools.

I’ve written a book about building belonging in schools! It’s called Building Belonging in Schools! I argue that 1. kids feeling belonging is important just because But 2. If we want them to really learn lots, for rigour to be high, then they need to feel secure in their class. Preorder now!

It's really important every student can see themselves and see difference in the curriculum. The status quo isn't good enough.

One woman scientist named in UK’s GCSE science syllabus. Three named in A level science. How many men? 85 and 178. Funny that. Half of my 50 PhD students have been women; four of them (and one man) are now professors. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Late to this but another piece really worth reading from Dan, about how schools and trusts can truly be held in common across communities. This is definitely the right direction, and I love the challenge at the end to join in thinking what this could look like.

I am consiering retraining as a secondary maths teacher. Have any other primary teachers made the same transition? I am aware of the NCETM route but wanted to know how realistic it is. RTs appreciated, especially if have a network involved in teaching.

Excellent posting, this is what social media is all about. I'd add, West London entirely is a god forsaken wasteland so Zone 2 either North, East or South are the only acceptable places to live in London.

Sure, lots of thinking / reports / campaigns in recent years, but now the question becomes what will oracy look like in practice, in classrooms, in schools, in exam situations - and that's where I think the trade-offs and controversies will be forced into the open.

The lack of focus on FE and continued obsession over the (successful) pre-16 curriculum continues to astound. What will make more difference to young people? Tech routes at 14 and dodgy T&L in the name of oracy, or actually properly funding and reforming FE for a change?

Very open to suggestions on what to watch! Since pandemic me and a friend have done all of Star Trek (mostly bad except DS9), all of Star Wars, Galactica (incredible), all of Who plus some other stuff. GoT is next but won't take long.

Now do Coronation Street!

Have spent the last three years watching every episode of Doctor Who (well, nearly all). Finished last night. Here are some semi-controversial opinions, in no particular order: Tom Baker isn't the best, and the second half of his tenure (with Douglas Adams in charge) is mostly bad.

Davison is really good by contrast. Colin Baker era is so horrendous I skipped most. Amy and Tegan are the best companions. Clara was devastatingly bad for Nu Who.

Fave episodes, in chronological order: The Troughton cybermen ones (Troughton is great) War Games Terror of the Autons Genesis of the Daleks City of Death Caves of Androzani The clowns one

One of the challenges regarding SEND, and something lacking from the current reforms, is the absence of any sense of collective social responsibility to enable those who need more from us to thrive. The emphasis is on the delivery of statutory services not on what happens after. Until we look at 1/3

Hi #EduSky and apologies again for being a day late again with my #Saturday3 with yesterday being crazily busy. Normal service should be resumed next week after I have changed time zones…

For something completely different: the men's rugby league World Cup starts this week, it's well worth a watch. A basic primer: The tournament is happening across Australia and New Zealand. The top teams are likely to be Australia, NZ, England, Tonga and Samoa.

RL is gloriously cosmopolitan; because of migration demographics and diaspora communities, lots of players are qualified to represent multiple countries and switching is common. A big part of the build up has been seeing who's going to play for who.

RL has also made huge efforts to speed up the game. All other things being equal, a random league game is better to watch than a random union game. Try it!

Lebanon will also have a decent side due to the Lebanese diaspora in Australia. Australia are perennial favourites, but star player Nathan Cleary broke his ankle in a horror tackle a couple of weeks ago so the tournament is wide open.

Many are fancying NZ. Samoa got to the final last time, and Tonga are good. England probably don't have quite enough but centre Herbie Farnworth is a superstar and one to watch.

🚨 NEW: Poorer students have the most to gain from university, but they’re the least likely to go. Our brand-new best practice guide argues universities should redouble efforts to support disadvantaged students 🧵

This is a shame I think - it gave a lot of confidence knowing there was a practising head in the building. Good luck Andrew.

The evidence is clear: countries with lower NEET rates than the UK get there almost entirely through higher rates of post-18 education. In these countries, more young people stay in education for longer and often combine it with work.

Reflecting on this, in light of 'Rewiring the State' it is a bit strange that the govt isn't looking to, you know, rewire the state when it comes to supporting young people and families. Instead we're in the comfort zone of curriculum changes.

Jim Lauder@mrjlauder.bsky.social

I guess govt are picking battles and see the vocational routes as more of a priority. IMV properly joining up local systems, and rooting trusts in communities as Dan describes would get more bang for buck than curriculum reform. But curriculum reform is easier and is a DfE-only thing.

Am still very hopeful we can get to place-based public service reform following greater devolution. This is the big prize from a Burnham govt.

Has it occured to him that someone saying "school wasn't for me" went to a crap school? Or wasn't taught to read properly at primary?

Govt's announcement on vocational GCSEs is a bit hard to judge. They've not said how many of what kids will take. SoS says today that this isn't about different routes for different kids... But that was the explicit rationale earlier in the summer, and for the MBacc?

Left hand side: England Right hand side: Scotland, Wales and a bunch of other places Suprisingly, the 'teach them maths' approach is more successful at teaching them maths

They've started teaching math teachers that it's inappropriate to teach kids how to do math correctly
