New pinned intro thread!
I’m Marshall Ryan Maresca, fantasy author who works on all sorts of things, including:
-a big interwoven fantasy epic - The Maradaine Saga
-a dieselpunk fantasy of motorcycles and mayhem - The Velocity of Revolution
-a 5x Hugo nommed podcast (@worldbuildcast.bsky.social)
I keep thinking about this. Like.. you have a bunch of writers going to a writing convention and so you pick *the revolting Nazi* to cover the event? You couldn't have fucking emailed *any other writer* in attendance for 600 words?
Since 2004, this community has helped make Firefox and the open internet possible.
Our “Come Back to Firefox” campaign reunites a few early internet icons to remind people what made the internet special, and why it’s worth protecting.
Fuck absolutely everyone involved in generating this AI flood that is materially damaging real creative laborers.
Here's hoping this work helps win more lawsuits, though. Anything that might help pop the bubble is a delight to me.
👨⚖️ TL;DR: AI doesn't need to write high-quality books for non-AI book writers to get hurt. Cheap books at massive volume are enough and they've cut what the average human-written book earns in most genres and pushed human titles down the bestseller ranks. (10/n)
One of the real ironies in this whole thing is, to a large degree the main reason we are even aware of JDA is because F770 kept treating his every shenanigan as news. If he had been ignored ten years ago, he'd be another forgotten drop in the sea of sub-par right-wing SF writers no one cares about.
There's something kind of humbling about playing a chess game where you did, in fact, wipe the floor with the other player, and you feel pretty good about yourself, but then you read the analysis of the game and find out you missed, like, eight shots for mate-in-one. Just plain missed them.
I know part of my weakness as a chess player is I tend to get LOCKED IN on an offensive idea, and while I usually am aware enough not to blunder into a defensive failure or give up a piece unintentionally, it means I do miss other avenues of attack because I want a cool fork or such.
Today, my brain pulled this up out of the archives:
Low bridge!
Everybody down!
Low bridge!
Cuz we're coming to a town!
And you'll always know your neighbor
You'll always know your pal
If you've ever gone a mile on
The Erie Canal!
If you grew up in upstate NY, sorry for the earworm.
A friendly reminder: I maintain a list of space opera novels by cisgender women, trans, and non-binary authors. Suggest works via the link, & share with everyone who might find it of use!

Sometimes when I'm writing by hand, but writing too fast, instead of writing "with the", I just write "withe", and I think we should embraced this new contraction as legitimate.
Many, many times I have been in the grocery store and someone approaches me thinking I work there. Sure, I’ve got that vibe, I get it.
This was a first: the person who approached?
My wife.
You’d think she’d know.
Imagine being served hundreds of Meatless Cheeseburgers, each one served by someone SWEARING they're just like real meat and you can't taste the difference, but they all taste like sawdust and paste, and someone is all, "but how can you be sure they're not meat?"
I mean, when I send a cold email to a writer I don't really know to invite to be on the podcast, it's usually little more than, "Hi! We'd love to have you on Worldbuilding for Masochists. Wanna?" You can tell its fake when you're being slathered with I Can Believe It's Not Butter.
How do we know?
Well, it's because humans who have actual human podcasts or actual human reading groups actually read books and know how to talk about them.
I wonder if the folks sending these AI written pitches think we can't tell.
WE CAN TELL.
And certainly we'll not have a guest on the show who is pitched to us with one of them.
I know one of us says this basically every day, but if you are an actual podcaster/bookstore/book club organizer... do not use chatGPT to write your pitch.
We will delete it. We see 7-371 of them a day and we can spot them by the 5th word. It doesn't matter if you're real. We'll delete it.
Zacharia notwithstanding, I want to say it is really impressive the amount of effort Campos-Duffy has put in to taking the "most despicable person from Real World San Francisco" title away from Puck. She was not content with just the silver medal.
White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia nods along on Fox & Friends as Rachel Campos-Duffy blasts that "ingrate Zelenskyy who keeps blowing up refineries and making things more complicated for the president ahead of the midterms"
OK, listen up, Universe. I want just ONE GIG with Marvel Comics, it doesn't matter what the gig is, as long as Luca Maresca does the art, because then the credits up top are MARESCA MARESCA and that would be rad as hell.
The number of times I've seen people say that the Democrats ran on only "Orange Man Bad", when that shows me they just didn't pay attention to anything else that was being said.
I got one of those scam-slop AI-written emails about marketing THE VELOCITY OF REVOLUTION, but, weirdly, this is one that actually might have actionable advice in it? Like, suggestions about Amazon categories and such that... isn't bad?
I don't know how I feel about that.
I honestly think the way to grab the left edge of the Overton window and pull it to a more reasonable place is for politicians to not only take positions like this and then insist that they are a moderate and these are moderate positions. Say it over and over until the media parrots it.
I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.
You know you're in a real small-town restaurant bar with regulars who are fixtures when they need to find you a table, so they point to a guy sitting at a table alone and say, "Hey, Jimmy, go sit with Mitch" and Jimmy gets up and joins another guy sitting alone, and now you have a table.
oh helllllllllll yeah
This is the energy we need. Not reconciliation. Yeah, we're a divided country, because the people on the other side of the line are fucking fascists. I'm fine being divided from them. And they need to face some goddamn consequences when they lose power.

Interested in Doctor Who history? My interview with Keith Barnfather at ArmadilloCon is now on YouTube!
Keith produced nearly 200 interviews with Doctor Who cast and crew members, and he also co-created a character who regularly appears in the main show 👀

🧵 Attention, Fellow SFF Artists and Authors -- here is my response to Must Read Magazines, after they presented an Asimov's art contract expecting me to waive all Moral Rights and Copyright to my art.
And, I would strongly advise the following to my fellow pros…. 1/
Today my brain dredged up a memory of the 1987 Michael Caine/Sally Field RomCom SURRENDER, where the meet cute involves an incredibly rushed sequence where they're in a mass robbery, forced to strip at gunpoint and are tied up naked, and instead of lasting trauma it's all "ANYWAY... romance!"
This is honestly a ripping fantasy series with incredible but not overwhelming worldbuilding, a complex and intertwined plot, mashed up genre combinations and spectacular characters. Really one of my favorites of the last decade.
Book launch day! YIELD UNDER GREAT PERSUASION is a #queer#romantasy with a real emotional bite about the difficulty of repairing a relationship with someone else when you haven't even repaired your relationship with yourself.

I am reaching an age where you occasionally find out someone you knew passed away a while ago, and you’re only just finding out now because you had long since lost touch.
