@jessnevins.bsky.social idle question, but do you know of a simple list of major Golden Age supers *with* their creators. I saw a comment elsewhere regarding which creators are Jewish or goyishe (Namor & Wonder Woman), and I wanted to see a more complete list.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

Food companies wanted deregulation. Now there are dozens of recalls across the country. Mining companies wanted deregulation. Now the black lung rate is at a 45-year high. Financial companies wanted deregulation. Now financial losses to fraud are the highest on record. Noticing a pattern?

"Reluctantly," a federal judge dismisses the Oath Keepers seditious conspiracy cases. Trump DOJ "excuses criminal acts that caused a centuries-long pillar of our democracy—the peaceful transfer of presidential power—to buckle." "The court cannot write a different ending," he adds. buff.ly/NvVKnaW

I completed the canon! As of tonight, I've seen stage productions of all Shakespeare's plays (plus two apocrypha) Took us years to find anyone staging Henry VI, but NAATCO's production was well worth the wait.

Massive thank you to KitKat, for giving all the other corporations the opportunity to make the same joke on April Fools Day, thus sparing us from their attempts at "original" humor.

I think people need to understand that when you're quibbling over Graham Platner, coming up with hypothetical scenarios where voting for him is a lesser evil, or worse, defending him outright, you're literally asking what level of Nazism is OK in American politics. The only answer is none.

✋ Former USG war crimes lawyer here. Apropos of SecDef's remarks this morning: Denial of quarter—even the declaration of no quarter—is a war crime. And recognized as such by the US Government. From DoD's Manual for Military Commissions.

They've now killed four people -- three U.S. citizens and a Mexican national. They've shot several more. They've lied about all of them. They haven't shaded the truth. They haven't "misled" us. They've brazenly, knowingly lied while in possession of the evidence disproving their lies.

DHS claimed "an ICE agent had fired 'defensive shots' into Martinez's vehicle after Martinez 'intentionally ran over' another agent." But body cam video now "shows that Martinez's vehicle, a blue Ford Fusion, was stationary or going at a very low rate of speed when he was fatally shot."

I agree, quite apart from the merits of the case. Alito could only defend the Supreme Court's authority to intervene by grievously misrepresenting the facts. The reality is that there's no plausible argument SCOTUS had the power to do what it did. Why didn't that matter to six justices?

David Nir@davidnir.com

To me, the NY redistricting case feels like a constitutional crisis in miniature. The Supreme Court is issuing orders it "cannot" issue, Sotomayor explains in her dissent. Yet it did so anyway. So how should the NY courts react to an order that should never have issued?

For your viewing pleasure in these trying times: Snow groomin' the human (me). Scientifically, the behavior is called allogrooming, or (as I pronounce it) "'allo! grooming"

One of every thousand American residents has been taken into custody by ICE in the last year.

Jen Bendery@jbendery.bsky.social

A stunning detail the ICE chief shared in this hearing that was supposed to be a brag, except it isn't: ICE has arrested 379,000 people between Jan. 2025-Jan. 2026 -- but only 8,700 were suspected gang members or known suspected terrorists. That's 2%! www.huffpost.com/entry/latest...

It was the kind of audacious idea that can make a fortune. Combine a widely loved concept with a just as widely loved item. What could go wrong? Pre-opening sign-ups filled up in minutes. In practice, though, they couldn't make the cat library work. "They won't stay on the shelves."

As @gretchenmcculloch.com often notes, your knowledge of language includes the ability to understand and create sentences you've never seen before.

Oh, nothing much, just people in formal wear trying to get to a special screening of "Melania" and getting yelled at by Marie Antoinette impersonators is....frankly not a sentence I ever anticipated writing, and honestly, it's making me feel kinda glum about my own fiction in comparison.

"Never Again" means "never again will we allow fellow human beings to be degraded, dehumanized, displaced and brutalized", not "as long as we don't do a shot-for-shot remake of the Holocaust we're good, we'll just change it up a bit next time"

If the Holocaust taught us anything, it is that papers and passports are all temporary and arbitrary based on who holds power. It taught us that no human being is illegal. And no excuse made by a ruthless and brutal regime will change those immutable facts. Kenn Maurice Orfanos, January 2026
