Gonna be bitchy for a sec: that piece in GQ about the future of books contains quotes from both some of the best minds in publishing and also... some other ones too.

Waiting eagerly for the reckoning. Give us a reckoning. We deserve a reckoning.

Billionaires, too. And maybe some chickenshit law firms and universities. Powerful executives cozied up to Trump. Now they fear a reckoning. www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

If James Talarico loses next month blame it all on me. I live in New York and have nothing to do with Texas, but I have ignored his what I estimate is approximately 433 texts asking me for money. So.

I love my partner so much that I have abstained from seeing You Can See Everything until he has room in schedule to see it too. Love involves struggle and sacrifice.

Not a single parent has filed a book challenge in Palm Beach in two years. The district just removed 1800 books anyway, because AI told them to. There are many reasons that is unthinkable but let's not forget AI DOES NOT HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOOKS. IT CANNOT READ THEM. It just makes crap up!

Florida Freedom to Read Project@flfreedomread.bsky.social

Palm Beach pulled 1800+ titles from its school library collections because AI flagged them for review. Media specialists and principals must sign attestation forms verifying their libraries are compliant with vague law. None of this is normal. freedomtoreadproject.substack.com/p/when-ai-de...

Here’s a me thing: I walked by Arundhati Roy earlier today and she was in the middle of lunch so I didn’t want to bother her but also my heart was racing as if she was Harry Styles.

“Catapult management could not be reached for comment, it remains unclear what will happen to the 16 frontlist titles across Catapult’s four imprints that are slated for spring 2027.” Shocked to learn that bored billionaires don’t answer the phone. www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/...

Annnnndddddddd, now Riverwork is out of stock in Cambridge! We should get more soon. I've added Said the Dead from absolute genius Doireann Ni Ghriofa, coincidentally featured on @maris.bsky.social newsletter this week!

portersquarebooks.comSaid the DeadFrom the award-winning author of A Ghost in the Throat comes a time-traversing, form-defying, genre-morphing story of a reader unraveling the legacies of a fabled asylum and the women who haunt its halls. In Cork, Ireland, a derelict Victorian mental hospital is being converted into modern apartments. One passerby has always flinched as she nears the place. In another time, she might have found herself held within those walls. She notices a sign, the first of many. Guided by an irresistible impulse, she follows them. FOR SALE. The letter L, broken free from a pane of stained glass. Whispers from the river. She trespasses, steals, absconds from the routines of her life—mother, spouse, daughter—as she hears a chorus of insistent voices. They murmur from archives, old casebooks that recorded their progress and failures—no change. They slip through stairwells and walls. They are the women who knew this place best, and with them—with one in particular—she feels a connection. She is drawn out; she knocks on a door in the night. Will this investigation, this journey, this haunting, take her too far into the past or will it bring her to a new understanding of what she might yet make of the future? A work of intense attention and tenderness, Doireann Ní Ghríofa's Said the Dead breaks boundaries between past and present, the imagined and real, history and fiction, to make something new and lasting. An investigation into the dangers of knowing our selves and the past, it is an experience like no other—a ghost story and a reclamation.

Had to restock Riverwork!

More importantly, those sales teams have shrunk down significantly while lists grow so there’s actually no time for these teams to read and recommend like they could even 5 years ago. Sales teams in publishing have to sell hundreds of titles every year with very little time or information.

I spoke about corporate consolidation and how sales teams across imprints are told which books to prioritize. And also book coverage in general interest outlets -- where once these publications were tastemakers, now they want to talk about a book only once everyone's already talking about it.

How did we all go from “selling out is the worst thing you can do” to “well, I don’t think this company is actively killing anyone and I desperately need health insurance”? Rhetorical question; I know how.

Q: do we know who runs the website where you choose the 9 books that have stuck with you the most? Like, I love this stuff but I don't want to find out it exists in order for Amazon to sharpen its algorithm.

You think journalism is dead and then a zillion publications send reporters to Brooklyn Heights to look at the animatronic bird. Really makes you think.

I love the trailer for the Sylvester Stallone movie because it feels like the guy impersonating Sly is doing his best Elizabeth Holmes impression. It's perfect.
