Political history junkie. Long career in public service. Former Army brat who grew up in places where history happened which formed my view of our country’s place in the world. Unabashed liberal.

JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

nytimes.comHow Trump Gave the Worst Polluters a Free Pass (Gift Article)The president temporarily waived clean-air rules for industrial facilities that spew cancer-causing gases. Then his appointees worked to gut the regulations altogether.

Donald is so simpleminded. If insurance companies don't get paid, healthcare providers don't get paid. And they will expect US to pay cash for EVERY visit, med, and procedure.

"What was worse and undeniable was that the U.S. was now helping to underwrite Russian attacks...we were offering to help Russia at precisely the moment that the futility of their four-year escalation of a conflict that began in 2014 was becoming clear. Russia was no longer gaining ground."

Did we really win the Cold War? Defeat fascism? Bury the Confederacy? In retrospect, thanks to Trump, MAGA and their enablers, perhaps none of those things. My latest. Hope you’ll give it a read. davidrothkopf.substack.com/p/so-as-it-t...

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/kQdKbY1

"It isn’t that Gerry Baker is incapable of calling something dangerous. It’s just that, to his mind, the only true endangerment emanates from Democrats. When it comes from a Republican, it’s a misunderstanding. Recklessness. *Insouciance*."

Nuclear regulation developed for low-chance, high-risk scenarios. Similar to the risk of AI. A simple place to start is mandatory incident reporting. If something goes wrong, everyone gets to know. https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/if-we-pay-for-safer-cars-why-wont

We don't even need the doomer argument. An AI agent escaping its sandbox, accessing a real company's systems and operating outside its instructions is already a serious safety failure. If labs can't control their agents, independent audits and mandatory incident reporting aren't optional anymore.

On this Labor Day, let us remember that it wasn’t the CEOs and billionaires who saved us during COVID-19. It was the janitors, nurses, cleaning crews, grocery and food workers with their hard, often invisible labor.

Huge corporations like Amazon, Walmart, and Uber are among the top employers of SNAP and Medicaid recipients. Meanwhile, their CEOs are raking in multi-million dollar pay packages. How is this not a bigger scandal?

Rep Moran and I introduced the bipartisan AI Kill Switch Act today. This is urgent, common sense legislation to address the problem of an advanced AI model that has gone rogue and escaped its guardrails (OpenAI / Hugging Face incident) or had insufficient guardrails (Mythos 5 and Fable 5).

Voting is the most basic act of citizenship. The SAVE Act makes it expensive. Expensive voting is restricted voting. Restricted voting is not democracy. It's oligarchy with a ballot fee. #PayToVoteSaveAct

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

People don't want masked thugs terrorizing their neighbors. They don't want warehouses being turned into detention centers. They don't want billions of taxpayer dollars spent on a rogue police state. They want healthcare. They want affordable homes. They want their basic needs met.

Democratic politicians telling us today how sad they are about Lindsey Graham's death because he purportedly had such a "great sense of humor" are why Democrats are currently struggling with a base angry and resentful at the evil agendas promoted by the likes of vile toadies like Lindsey Graham.
