Airbnb is spending over $7 million — and much, much more than that, actually — to control City Hall ahead of 2028. Torched is here to explain all the ways that Olympic and Paralympic sponsor is showing up on your ballot this year — including in some ways you probably didn't expect

The Washington Spirit owners are worried a roof would lead to more concerts and interfere with their league schedule. But that isn't stopping DC United owner Jason Levien from using the Spirit's expiring lease as a cover for his own $300m subsidy demand.

Prediction markets are one of the new dimensions of this election cycle. We already see a lot of rumors and conspiracy theories based on misinterpretations of data, statistics, and visualizations. The prediction markets add a new data source ripe for both manipulation and misinterpretation.

Pretty great piece that would have been mega reassuring for me a few years (decades) ago Trans people who understand and can explain biology are 💞

For the third time in the Finals, the Valkyries hold the Dream to their lowest point totals of the season. 64 points in game 1, then 62 points in game 4, now 55 in game 5. Valks were also responsible for Dream’s regular-season low of 66. Their regular season average was 91.3 ppg.

the knee-jerk nature of so much WNBA discourse really sidelines fans from leveling legitimate criticism at the most gendered disparity in women's sports — the *extreme* lack of bureaucratic aptitude within these front offices and ownership groups

I am unsettled by how upset I am at the way the (W)NBA resolved the “where and when are we going to play Game 6?” question After all the insults to women’s basketball this season has offered, this might be the coup de grâce

I’m struggling to watch Game 5 on the telly with anything like my usual curiosity/equanimity. Part of this is probably, with the schedule now established, I won’t see Game 6 or (if nec.) Game 7 due to other commitments. But the way these players are being treated, and fans… my cookies are frosted

On the field, you say? Tell us more, Rob…

When the Laver Cup booking messed with the Valkyries’ first round home game in 2025 I kind of understood – it seemed like the basketball team didn’t exist when they inked that deal, and Lacob vowed never to let that kind of thing happen again The shenanigans in ATL this time though? Come tf on. 🤢

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

helenwebberley.comAre transgender sports bans really about protecting women? | Dr Helen WebberleyThe data says no. Those most hostile to women are most in favour of banning trans athletes.

Hey @agrobbonta.oag.ca.gov, did you read this? Even if you’re not the Attorney General of California, I think you ought to read this. I’d like to add that a recent visit to @sfchronicle.com led me into an equally indecipherable Privacy Policy and Terms of Service that seemed, well… bad

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

In the first good hiring decision I’ve heard about lately at TNT Sports, Reavo is joining their studio crew (part-time, I’m assuming). He’s hanging out at the Heritage Classic which is on TNT right how Smart and funny is a good television combination

The kicker is right at the end of this 7 piece thread, and I recommend you follow it to the end

Ian Boudreau@ianboudreau.com

I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

This is about the signs people put up on their farmland along the major highways in the Central Valley (I-5, 99, etc) While the thinking regularly infuriates me, I find it to be a helpful barometer to measure what the always-a-victim landowner class there has on their mind

Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip. The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century. But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵

A WNBA Finals report on NPR got me thinking about the fact that the Bay Area has two venue nicknames that (I think) arose organically, though the teams adopted them – Ballhalla and the Shark Tank Seems unusual, and cool. College football has some (Death Valley, the Big House, etc); rare in the pros

I’m about 1,100 km from the border so I may have this wrong but: the NDP (left-ish), in power for 10 years in BC, called an election 2 years early (because the American President is crazy?), lost overwhelmingly tonight to the Conservatives, who seem to have run on “development makes us rich” (more)

“law and order” and (mostly) “throw the bums out.” The last part I get, but their idea of development seems to mostly be “extract fossil fuels from somewhere and ship them out of here to burn somewhere else” For a province that has been on fucking fire due to climate change this seems ill-advised

In recent years, the population of swine in Iowa at any given time has been around 25 million This year one is running for Senate on the Democratic ticket Shame on you @joshturek4iowa.bsky.social

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

Here’s something you should know about minks: They have lungs and airways remarkably similar on a cellular level to those of people. They’ve spread flus and infected humans before with COVID-19. Right now, bird flu is spreading on a Utah farm filled with thousands of them… 🧵

Motoring up US 101 in Santa Rosa today I encountered this portable message sign: STRIPPING AHEAD 10 PM-6AM This was just before a pedestrian overpass, and these thoughts came to mind… • That’s a pretty long shift for a dancer, I hope they get breaks • The tips up there are probably terrible

A little further up the road I encountered my favorite seasonal reminder from CalTrans (on several different changeable message signs) Do deer read highway signs? Or Bluesky? Whether or not they do, if you take part in the festivities this fall, practice safe rutting

As upsetting as this is in the first instance, I can’t help wondering how far things have to go before major national news media are ready to question his mental fitness At this point I’m inclined to think “never”
