GM. We are going to win. An internet where 4 corporations wall us all into their surveillance state and make us pay rent forever is just incompatible with human flourishing. The only question is how long it takes everyone propping up history's worst billionaires to figure this out.

So, they could design a system to warn us of creepy iTag presence independently of mobile OS, when do they deploy such protocol to warn us of creepy glasses at the OS level?

Fascinating read, if only for the business ideas for google, paypal, amazon, facebook & co. Some people do see the future. The piece author though, only got this right: "this virtual reality where frustration is legion and [...] important aspects of human interactions are relentlessly devalued."

Were there people overconfidently predicting the Internet's demise? You betcha! (Feb, 1995).

gods great and small, have we all forgotten all our parents who now, if they're still with us, spend all their time glued to like Facebook still or whatever, direly warning us that the Internet was full of monsters who could never be trusted / was worse than the bomb threats they faced as children

Katherine Alejandra Cross@quinnae.com

I see a commonly repeated sentiment on Bluesky, the website for 38 year olds, that says everyone was excited by the advent of the Internet in a way that far exceeds any excitement for gen AI/LLMs. The thing is, that's not strictly true.
