πŸ“£ NEW! I’ve just released the BIGGEST and perhaps most creative project I’ve ever worked on! β€œSearching for Birds” searchingforbirds.visualcinnamon.com 🐀 A project, an article, an exploration that dives into the data that connects humans with birds, by looking at how we search for birds.

Very excited to talk at the @beyondtellerrand.com birthday party! πŸŽ‰ I'll be showing a very deep (and a bit messy) dive into what goes into creating the biggest #dataviz project I've ever made. Hand drawn sketches, useless charts, a pinch of live-coding a nest of eggs + more Hope to see you there!

Travesty if CNN wins this, searching for birds is a BEAUTIFUL Dataviz by comparison! Vote people!

Please help "Searching for Birds" win Best Dataviz in the Lovie Awards! πŸ™πŸ™‡β€β™€οΈπŸ™ It has dropped to 2nd place with 48% 😱😱 but there is 1 day to place your vote: vote.lovieawards.com/PublicVoting... Thank you so much if you do (or have already done) β™₯️

This has been the biggest project I've ever worked on, 6 months nearly full time (with fantastic story and writing help by Emily Barone β™₯️) and I'd love to be able to have it win because (you think) it's worth it (and to show that one/two persons can go up against big companies such as CNN ;) )

Instant save to my favorite resources, this looks like it could be extremely useful!

πŸ—ΊοΈ πŸ“£ I've been off bluesky for a while, but popping in to announce Graticule, my new app for making maps! graticule.org It's a work-in-progress but I'd love to hear any feedback. What features would you like to see next?

In less than a month I'll speak as a keynote at PyData Amsterdam 2026 on Sep 10 & 11! I'll be talking about how I add creativity to any of my charts, going along a scale from no-nonsense charts to data art ✨ πŸ‘‰ Tickets: pretix.eu/pydata/amste... 🎟️ PYDATANB10 for 10% off See you there!

To quote my past self ;) "This is probably my favorite book in terms of teaching you the best practices of data visualization. … No matter what you use to visualize your data with, this book is for you." Now available as a very affordable e-book πŸ‘‡

Juuso Koponen@juusokoponen.bsky.social

πŸ“Š My and @jhilden.bsky.social’s book has been out of print for some time, as our publisher closed down its general publishing arm. We are working on a 2nd edition, but it is not going to be ready anytime soon, so we’re making the current edition available as an e-book for €9.90. payhip.com/b/zbl43

And if you can't get enough of birds + dataviz, then this seems very interesting!

Jer Thorp@jerthorp.bsky.social

For the last two years I've been teaching an online course about birding and data visualization. It's a course about noticing. About learning to be critical about data. About incubating and encouraging environmental care. www.jerthorp.me/learning

I think peers in the dataviz world will back me in saying that Nadieh's work blows our mind (she even made one for LOTR fans^^). It's AMAZING, so creative and ingenious! This one ⬇️ is just magical and wonderful ❀️❀️ I recommend everyone check this out!!

I want to give a big, big thank you to Emily Barone for her enormous help in finding the story within the mountain of data and plots I buried myself in at the start of this project and writing a fantastic story πŸ™Œ

Full of custom, interactive visuals (a giant nest, a giant egg, the US made up of eggs!) to explore people’s experience with birds. It’s full of insights, funny outliers and visuals you can lose yourself in trying to explore all that the vast amount of bird data has to offer.

If you enjoy data, visuals, photos of adorable birds or just neat internet things, please check it out, and please share it onward if you enjoyed it! 🐦 (as I'm self-publishing this I could really _really_ use your help to spread the word, thank you! πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™)

After several months of analysis, design, drawing, writing, and coding (and a little bit of birdwatching), it turned into a fully dataviz-driven, vibrant, whimsical and fun interactive story for birders and anybody even remotely interested in birds πŸ¦‰

Big New Project Release! πŸ“£ I'm very excited to share this long-form highly interactive data (visualization)-driven article on Neglected Tropical Diseases that I worked on for The END Fund. Progress is being made. An international coalition of national and local governments, philanthropic donors, community leaders, and private sector partners have made incredible progress against these diseases. 58 countries have officially eliminated at least one NTD!

Big New Project Release! πŸ“£ I'm very excited to share this long-form highly interactive data (visualization)-driven article on Neglected Tropical Diseases that I worked on for The END Fund. It takes a deep dive into NTDs and the millions of people affected every day πŸ‘‰ endfund.org/visualizing-...

Today is World NTD Day, and this article celebrates the quiet, historic progress made against neglected tropical diseases through a first-of-its-kind neglected tropical disease data visualization.

Using a combination of UN and WHO open-source data, alongside data by The END Fund, "Visualizing Neglect" spotlights why missing data tells a story of those most impacted by NTDs. Often women and marginalized groups, some of the most impoverished groups in the world, pay the price for this neglect.

Had a great time talking with Jon Schwabish from the PolicyViz Podcast about my new book CHART πŸ˜ƒ We talked about a lot different dataviz topics. From straightforward charts to data art. My design process, the importance of sketching, and my client work. Listen to it here: zencastr.com/z/m5zj5cnD

Anybody else going to the "Information Design Conference" this Friday? I have some copies of my book CHART left that I can bring in case anybody would like to buy a copy? (€35) I can sign it right there for you as a bonus πŸ˜‰

Looking forward to discussing CHART in the upcoming DataVis Book Club on August 18th! ^_^

Congrats to @nadiehbremer.com on her successful launch at Outlier yesterday! I can't wait to see more people fall in love with this book. From seeing the mock ups to holding it in my hand, I don't think this book could have come out any more beautiful.

I just had my virtual book launch for CHART at Outlier!! βœ¨πŸ˜ƒ (together with @datacitron.bsky.social who did the whole layout design)

Neil Richards@questionsindataviz.com

It’s the chART virtual book launch at #outlier2025 - here’s @nadiehbremer.com and @juliebrunet.bsky.social appearing remotely, with @zanewolf.bsky.social proudly displaying the real book! Can’t wait to get hold of my copy (frustratingly 3000 miles away from me at home right now!)

ICYMI but "CHART: Designing Creative Data Visualizations from Charts to Art" is officially released and I'm having a virtual launch party tomorrow at Outlier conference πŸŽ‰ Come join me tomorrow at June 11th, at 09:30 PST / 12:30PM EDT / 18:30 CEST! πŸ˜ƒ πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡

As I do not yet have my own copy of the book, in case any of you have received it already, I would LOVE it if you could send me some photos of how it looks, so I can share these during the party as well! πŸ€— Hopefully see you tomorrow!

(PS: If you've ordered via Amazon longer than 2-3 days ago, you probably got a print-on-demand incorrect version of the book, probably in black and white. I'll also talk about this, but in short, you'll want to order a replacement, as the one you have is "defective")

I'll show you more from the book's inside, talk about the different lessons, and Julie Brunet will make a guest appearance and show never-before-seen works in progress on the design of the book. And you're free to ask questions of course!
