This is a rare week reminding us that oligarchy, algorithmic manipulation, abuse of power & undermining of democracy isn't a tidal wave that can't be stopped, even if it feels like we're standing in front of it all holding a teaspoon sometimes. Such a pleasurable read from @annpettifor.bsky.social

annpettifor.substack.comAvanti Popolo! People Are Storming Oligarch Gates of Political Power - and Winning“No force can forever overpower a people who have decided to take their destiny into their own hands’...and bring an end to the Trump era.

I went to bed feeling so worried for Brazil, but disaster has been more than averted. So many lessons, not least that: "The campaign was able to overcome even algorithmic bias by social media giants like Meta, which favoured Bolsonaro." Dirty tricks and the power of money doesn't always win.

It was a Conservative government that rightly introduced an additional tax on banks in 2015. Unfortunately they cut this just as bank profits began soaring from higher rates - a move the TUC found has cost the public finances £6bn. Disappointing to see lessons haven't been learned.

2) In 2014 there was actually a Conservative government in power. Even if b/millionaires were moving because of taxes (and they're not) that's also not the main point - those shouting loudest about taxes have 'left the building' already because our tax system allows that. Here's a reality check:
