Mixed feelings on this one. My dad had a small library in the basement with 4 walls of shelves filled with MMPBs. Teen me loved going down and browsing for an interesting book. Lots of war and spy thrillers. Some were hidden gems, some were crap, but this was a formative practice for me.

The mass market paperback, light in the hand and on the wallet, once filled airport bookstores and supermarket media aisles. You may never buy a new one again. www.nytimes.com/2026/02/06/b...

Now, I'm part of "the problem": I have thousands of ebooks and a collection of HCs of books I really enjoy. I still have a few PBs, but not many. And most of those are trade, not MMPB. If my kids want to browse my version of my dad's library, they can log onto my calibre server and download a book.

Me, before reading the excerpted passage: “I don’t see why anyone would read Olivia Nuzzi’s book. What a pointless exercise.” Me, after reading the passage: “I must read this book. The hate-read theoretical has launched the hate-read possible.”

Formula is expensive, but it saves lives. Reach out if you need help paying for formula.

btw if wic gets cut and you’re short on formula, do not water down your baby’s formula. ask for help and trust people will show up to make sure your baby stays fed. let me know and i’ll make sure of it.

This won't convince anyone that believes in cryptids like the chupacabra and meritocracy, but come on. These people are attacking the arc of the moral universe with sledgehammers to bend it away from justice.

I am not a physician, and certainly not Trump's physician. I had Bell's palsy for almost a week last year, and I am in my 30s. It went away with a short course of Prednisone. I am also not a wannabe fascist dictator who is so insecure he can never admit to any human frailty.

They keep asking me to leave a 5 star review, but since everyone (just me) on my (self-hosted) podcast app is already subscribed, I'll review it here. This podcast has been my favorite find this year. Frank, fun discussions about the news of the week. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thunderstorm rolling in. My 6yo started singing "Thunder". I asked him if he likes Imagine Dragons. His reply: "Yes! I'm a tarantudragon. It's a mix between a tarantula and a dragon!"

An appeal to my Mormon kindred. The "celestial smile" is not a great look. Here's the bind: 1) "lose the undershirt" is a non-starter 2) white button downs, while not mandatory, are still culturally the signal of orthodoxy

bobby@bobbylewis.blacksky.app

if your collared shirt is so thin that people can see your undershirt through it, lose the undershirt or wear a thicker button down

I wrote my Utah state senator, Jerry Stevenson, asking what the state lege plans to do if the federal Dept of Education is shuttered and federal funding is cut off. Below is my question, helpfully bolded, and his response. I wouldn't call it an "answer".

Great video and amazing channel to follow. Prof. Park says we're going to get weekly deep dives like this, and I'm here for it. I think my wallet screamed in terror at all the books recommended in this 15 min video. My library card is trying to calm everyone down :)

We simply had to intentionally destroy the world’s strongest economy while dismantling our scientific and educational infrastructure to ensure that a team with a trans girl would never finish second place in the Mountain West volleyball standings again

I see the "when" question as a way for people to feel justified in their inaction--to assuage themselves in thinking that they don't have to do anything, because things haven't gotten bad enough yet. (Even though acting now could keep things from getting even worse).

5th Sunday lesson today is a review of every General Conference talk Nelson has given since becoming prophet. Holding General Conference in April seriously undermines every attempt by the church to increase the emphasis on Easter. There's really no contest.

If the church really wants members to make Easter important, change GC to 1x/yr in October. Make March and April all about Easter. Broadcast an Easter devotional Easter Sunday evening if they *have* to.
