There is something brutally psychically injurious to being constantly told "just do good work and you'll be successful" while watching people who do the most dogshit work possible do all the succeeding.

Along the same lines, how are we possibly going to convince the generation that's growing up right now that it's good to be honest and intelligent, when they're seeing the opposite being rewarded every day?

Coupled with those doing the most vital work keeping us educated, safe, alive and cared for (quietly in the background, I might add) being increasingly forced to work for poverty wages…

Hitler & his abominable military invaded half of Europe in the 1940s. On the surface, it looked like a success, but in reality it was just a disaster waiting to happen.

pardon my profanity... they lied to you... suck dick and kiss ass and they will promote you so they feel better.. I was told by most of the places I worked I was the best worker they had... but they never cared to keep me because i told them the truth.. 1 musta held 50+ jobs in my life

I think all of these fail upward trust fund brunchlord guys get pooped out of a factory somewhere and we should try to locate it and shut it down to save society

"DEI" affirmative action for mediocre media "centrists" and you get far more money and funding, elite positions and prestige, underserved influence and power within the system (hopefully "dismantling the master's house"), travel, even a statue of yourself (at a fake university in Austin, Texas):

Bari Weiss "entire career is says things that old men like to hear" bsky.app/profile/orig... Tyler Austin Harper "same appeal As member of traditionally liberal demographic let me explain why all these right wing talking points are the actual truth liberals are afraid of" bsky.app/profile/proa...

A few years before I retired, I developed a really good project, and my new boss took credit. He was "one of the guys". We have a big meeting, and he got asked questions he could not answer. It was painful to watch. I said nothing just smiled. It was wonderful.

Lordy- talk to my 23 y/o. Attended a special HS where you can get an Associate’s Degree while in HS. Finished college at Colorado State with a 3.9 in 3 years. Graduated to a shit economy and a $14.50 an hour retail job at a high end sex toy shop. 1/2

2/2 meanwhile, her bestie who went to rehab twice in high school and didn’t attend an hour of college makes almost twice that at a medical records job she fell into. Choices.

Someone gave you bad advice. Never heard that one myself. Here's what I know. 1. Life isn't fair. 2. Do good work because you have integrity. 3. Success in the corporate world is for those who are good at managing up. 4. Define success in your own way not what society tells you.

How are you measuring success? An expensive car? A huge home? Luxury vacations? Obscenely expensive jewelry? THINK Pursuing wealth is a bottomless pit Nothing will ever be enough "Do good work" because you have integrity "Do good work" because you are mature "Do good work" because of who you ARE

Bottom line, If you're unhappy you can always leave - but that is often wholly dependent upon finding another job 1st And if you're of a certain age? Nope And if you're of a certain age and a woman? God no And if you're a person of color AND a woman? I have friends who attest to the 100's of "NO's"

Hubs works for a multinational, multi-billion $ financial co that collects/forecloses delinquent mortgages Horrible job Ppl are losing their homes left & right Many fr MEDICAL ISSUES For "Employee Appreciation Week" know what he & his "team" received? A BBQ pork sandwich & salad for one (1) lunch

The “attention economy” made it worse. If you spend enough time jumping around in the internet screaming “me, me, me!” it doesn’t matter what kind of dogshit work you’re doing. It’s even better if your “work” consists of being an insufferable prick rage baiting everyone.

I've mainly worked in hotels since 1998(mostly night audit aka 3rd shift). Trained several people who did crap work who are now General Managers, yet I'm still on 3rd. Every time I try to move up, I'm told I need experience. This 54 year old will likely die on the job!

You're right. Over the past few years, it has been "brutally, psychically injurious" to see the worst of us prosper. And yet, good people are inclined to do good work, and the definition of success is not soley based on money.

"Succeeding while doing shit work" is the true definition of a patronage government system. It's the bedrock of fascism.

Off point, but…I hate how “successful” equates with “has made a lot of money” in this country. By this standard, a school teacher will never be successful.

I think most people would consider making enough to live a comfortable middle class life doing something you like as success. Granted, teachers don't actually make enough to do that, but ya know. People *think* they do lol

yeah but this is actually what poisoned me also: I was taught not to be concerned about getting rich. but it turns out if you don't compete to make as much money as you can you can't afford a home and healthcare and to ever retire.

myths are meant to be debunked. Crappy, treacly maxims are to be challenged. No, cream doesn't always rise to the top. Bad people succeed all the time and dedicated workers live in poverty frequently. Sorry mom, some stuff is not right to repeat. Shoulda taught me not to care and to pretend.

Exactly. Watching these incompetent, corrupt rich ppl take over the 🌎 with lies, abuse & murder all while they’re looting/bombing countries. They’re yachting druggies/drunkards who rape kids & young women, destroy the environment, kill jobs & bring back irradiated diseases & NOBODY is stopping them.

Yup! It’s called a meritocracy and it’s a bunch of BS. The hardest workers I know are usually poor. Many poor people work two and three jobs just to survive. Yeah pull yourself up by your boot straps is a bunch of crap.

Stupidity (or narcissism) + Luck has ALWAYS been the recipe for the most unusually successful people, because being unusually successful requires you to make foolish risks that happen to pay off. We've just reached the point these people have become the entire economy.

That was never more true than when I worked for Canadian Pacific/Canadian Pacific Kansas City. It's still staggering to me how many idiots got promoted into positions they have no business being in.

Much of that has to do with what those truly in charge (managers, customers, etc.) consider to be "good" work, and who they believe is doing it. I've also observed that those who sell themselves the best tend to get ahead regardless of the quality of their work.

Everyone who has ever had a job has experienced this. But seeing it on a macro scale in almost literally everything - from government to media and anything in between - is a different kind of demoralizing.

Profit motive rewards those who conform to predator culture. If you're too ethical, you don't get invited to the important networking events like child abuse parties. Our culture is built on disincentivizing caring about love > money. That valence MUST flip.

It's because it's a lie to make you feel like you can attain something when all the cards have been stacked against you. You're told to do 'good work' because it makes the money-making machine work for billionaires. The same billionaires who rigged the game in their own favour.

I saw a post on Reddit the other day asking why young people don't want to do solid respectable jobs like being a postie or a nurse any more... The replies were basically "bc everything is now a scam and the only way to make money is by being in on the scams"

💯 See if you can find a single one of the sociopathic incompetents responsible for this fiasco who has ever been held to account. Even with a funding of "widespread failure" from a formal public inquiry, the corruption at the top covers for its own, and they fail upwards to kill again. 🧵:

Module 3 of the UK COVID Inquiry is out. Encouraging to see explicit recognition of the "widespread failure" of clinical leaders to understand aerosol science, and the "clear failure" of IPC leaders to understand that they might be wrong. #medsky #scisky covid19.public-inquiry.uk/reports/modu....

Most women know that just doing good work and not constantly bragging about it is the perfect way to be ignored, unappreciated, and undervalued. And yet, bragging about it makes us pushy, obnoxious, aggressive, shrill.

What they meant: Don't care about quality, understand the buzz words, don't care about working hard, display the typical exhaustion, befriend the workers, do them $1 favor in return for taking their credit worth thousands. Shine your boss like a prize. Lick their boots. Tell lies about coworkers.

This sounds about right. I worked at a large magazine company for more than a decade. You could count the suits/publishers who seemed to have the remotest clue what was actually involved in putting stuff out on the fingers of one hand. How we cursed them silently as they sloped off nightly at 5.30.

I suspect that statement is likely inherited from the time of slavery. Trump for sure is doing a shitty job, yet somehow he's killing it, he's excellent at exploiting the poor.

"just talk about how hard you're working and how great your ideas are" doesn't have the same vibe but those people seem to be killing it. (it is my soul)

That’s because those people don’t want you to get ahead like they do, by lying and cheating. “Keep believing that hard work will get you there, while I play the system and get more for myself.”

It all depends on your definition of success & sometimes physical (monetary) success takes a very long time. The real success is when your word can always be trusted & you are respected by friend & foe alike.

It was supposed to be just dumpsters past returns. Maybe because he paid epsteon money and wrote it off as a business expense?

Not even succeeding, in the former meaning of the concept. Yet, they get to stay in high level, high status job while destroying whatever is in their domain. No such thing as passively fail or be satisfied with doing nothing.

Honestly if I had a time machine I would tell my past self to lie about anything professionally. Lie about your education, lie about your qualifications, lie about anything at work. When projects fail lie about that too. The consequences are minimal, the rewards are unlimited. The US loves liars.

This is behind the burnout of every creative person in Hollywood eventually. The sheer amount of work necessary just to be told “no” while complete trash loses money left and right is heartbreaking.

I learned this lesson in the business world 40 years ago. It is called "failing upward" and is rampant in the white collar world that is so full of bloat that the idiots run everything. True story: I once had to show a Mckinsey Consultant how to sign into a computer. And then he became my MD.

In my own experience, corporate rewards people who look good, talk well, and use high level points to leadership positions. It's never the ones that actually do the work and make things happen and who knows the system.

thing is as much as this is going to sound like a cop out..... A lot of those guys do actually end up messing themselves up real good......IE evey streamer, some really bad vtubers, crypto scammer, ponzi artist, scammer, scalper, shitty investor bros, politicians, ego maniac influencers etc....

There is an old tired bromide "work hard 2 get ahead," yet there is considerable evidence suggesting it is untrue especially when observing incompetence of some individuals being rewarded & ascending,it is indeed frustrating, especially when seeing incompetence & stupidity in our leadership

The Bright Side definition of "successful" is far different from the Dark Side of just Greed. To have such disregard for worker safety, livable wage, full benefits, plus the destruction of our Planet Earth is incomprehensible. How many billions does one person need. Fck all of 'em

The ones who do good and are successful have a clean conscious and live with integrity … the ones who cheat, steal, commit crime to get ahead … live a life of fear with dreams that terrorize them because they KNOW at any moment they can be exposed!

Bingo! Yup (… well, mostly “yup”). Your post speaks to the notion of rising to (one’s) levels of incompetence; and I’d add that those folks aren’t “merely”/“only” succeeding, but rather—especially in this Trumpian era (but during Bush- Clinton- and Reagan-eras, too) succeed by participating in >

> corruption (whether personal malfeasance or institutional participation). In other words, Trump and family are bona fide criminals; meanwhile, acolytes (et al.) if not directly participating in, nevertheless facilitate/cooperate. Thus, to your(?) point (reading between lines, extrapolating) re >

Tell me about it. I come from a family of educated Black women. We all bought the bullshit that getting advanced degrees would translate into career success. But there is a contingent of white men who feel that Black women are too uppity, and they want us on the bottom.

For anyone not out of the Silver Spoon drawer the answer is entrepreneurial thinking. Think historically how disenfranchised ethnic, religious and cultural groups learned to survive from one generation to the next. I am from Blue Collar Redneckville. Took me decades to see and understand my path.

no that is the silver spoon answer just grab everything you can for yourself and fuck everyone else you do know the puritans weren't actually oppressed right?

Total disconnect for me about the Puritans. Not sure why term “being an entrepreneur”seems so foreign to many people here. Except for grifters, con artists, azzkizzers and good ol’ boys connections, nobody becomes independent by working for one of the millions of anal openings in the work force.

Read Sinclair Lewis's The Jungle if you haven't already. It could help you recognize your inner socialist. :) The main character keeps saying, I will work harder! as his family and his life falls victim to corporate greed.
