I spent all day writing the thread in my head about how Bolsonaro's win was the culmination of a 20-year project to end Brazilian democracy, with the participation of both domestic elites and foreign actors like the US state department and Meta. This is all true, of course, except he didn't win.

This isn't a strong mandate for the conservatives, they seem to have gotten fewer votes than last election. Its a historically low voter turnout and a collapse in support for Eby.

Reviewing a paper and I realize I forgot to write down some page numbers. No problem, let me just grab my copy of... wait, where did I put that book... it was here last month... oh wait, did I bring it there... no there... um... maybe I can find a digitized version?

"Grimdark medievalism isn't selling, and people need to catch up on that." Yes! Give me medieval movies and shows with colour amd joy in them. What is this generation's Knights Tale?

American Medieval Podcast@americanmedieval.bsky.social

medieval is always in the news! like a cool hillfort from the early Middle Ages with Roman technology. it's neat! #medievalsky youtube.com/shorts/c33M5...

This whole thing seems like a grift by people who watched a few movies portraying bad teachers from the '50s and said "that's how we run a school, but with AI added in".

Had students discussing what reality is and what verification is today. Because every class can be a philosophy class if you try hard enough.

I'm sure Kenney is happy, she chose to ride the tiger to replace him, now he gets to watch her try to get off of it.

Good outcome in Alberta to question 10, but man, this is arsonist-fireman behaviour, right there. All this charade started because Smith chose it. Incompetence is dangerous. She should be ousted.

As an economist, why do I like gas taxes? - Ramsey: demand for gas is relatively inelastic, so the tax is less distortionary than taxes on goods with relatively more elastic demand -Pigou: gasoline use has externalities, so tax it to change behaviour in a way that accounts for those negative effects

David Eby@davidebybc.bsky.social

Up to $20 back in your pocket every time you fill up. Our plan cuts up to 30 cents a litre off gas by suspending part of the gas tax and reining in big oil’s profits at the pump. It’s one of the ways we'll make life more affordable, and how we build B.C. strong.

Imagine what would be out there if our government saw transit as a service that supports the economy?

Skye@skyenott.bsky.social

I would have had a transit exchange on my block already if the province wasn't in permanent austerity mode

This would be a very star trek take on 4x games. The three normal ways of expansion: invasion, diplomacy, and culture, but each race can only do two of them. Federation gets diplomacy and culture, Klingons get invasion and culture, romulans get invasion and diplomacy, or something like that.

Jon Phillips@jowiph.bsky.social

A Star Trek civ-like game where you can only win with culture or science but can still lose militarily would kick ass, actually

I kind of love this minimum requirement. The ability to disagree about non factual matters with intent. Its a bar a cat passes, because I did feed the cat but the cat disagrees because it would like more or different food, and it will let everyone know it has never been fed in its life.

They’re all just recycling the Jewish Question against Brown people. Concentration camps. Deportations/Expulsions. Copypaste rhetoric. “They’re here, exactly as we are, but they could never truly be one of us.” They don’t even have the decency to come up with a new name, it’s that plagiarized.

Here is tortured tautology Keeperman offers for why Desi college kids — wearing cowboy hats, throwing up the "Hook 'em Horns" hand sign, cheering the Longhorns — are not "assimilated": because he said so talkingpointsmemo.com/news/chris-r...

One of the most harrowing things about academia, when you're a grad student, is how vulnerable you are to how you're perceived by more senior researchers. Your career advancement depends on confidential letters of reference & private discussions amongst faculty. You have no information or control.

Good to see David Eby attending the ceremonies at Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc today. He had strong words of support for residential school survivors.

Sometimes I think about where we would be as a culture today if #MeToo in 2017 had radicalized more straight men into fighting sexual abuse instead of creating a culture of "oh god don't get me CANCELED" and "fake accusations" paranoia and resentment

The problem is not "are there some tasks that can be automated" it's "can this technology run cheaply enough to make money by providing the service it does well to enough people" and the answer to that right now is no, but there's a big push to make people think that yes is just around the corner.

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

In the same way that the .com issue was not "are websites useful" or the block chain issue was not "are there places where better security would be useful". Can you provide the product people actually want or that solves a problem for them in a way that has a low bar to access?

As I've moved from terminally online, to chronically online, and now to just frequently online I find I'm missing a lot of the short run discourse. I think this might be good for my sanity, only seeing things that stay important for a week or so.

Now that we have proof that AI generated findings are more likely to be research misconduct taken from those who uploaded their findings, perhaps institutions should rethink AI contracts? If it doesn't prohibit use of what you upload to train the model, you're agreeing to the misconduct.

Given the US hostility to Canada, I want to start reading more new Canadian fiction: Any recommendations for newish Canadian sci fi, fantasy, or historical fiction?

Seems messed up (and perhaps negligent) for them to put out a product designed like this.

Mark Follman@markfollman.bsky.social

What happened after OpenAI banned the first account was astonishing: ChatGPT advised the shooter about how to evade its own safeguards on violence. “Don’t use real-world locations,” ChatGPT said, later adding: “You can still be twisted. Just be clever about it.” www.motherjones.com/media/2026/0...

Can he keep this up for 30 days? We're about to find out, and be exhausted by it.

Anthropic has designed a product that regularly produces automated hacks of other entities, including governments. That’s not “going rogue.” It is either a terrible design problem or what they intended.

That's a really good summary. But also note that Eby ran two years ago on: Climate change mitigation Decrease household costs Reconciliation Improved Healthcare and dr access Safer communities Cheaper homes Sustainable economy Seven things and I can think of unforced missteps for 4 of them.

Dear Milobar, I'm having a hard time remembering what party you're in any more. It seems to change daily. I have met you many times and you seem a good person, but then you keep doing this stuff, and it's really hard to believe you have any principles when they seem to not matter to you.

Justin McElroy 🇨🇦@jmcelroy.bsky.social

The CentreBC party, which essentially agreed to let Milobar and his coalition of eight MLAs take over their party four days ago, is now big mad that all of them (with the exception of Elenore Sturko) seem to be returning to the Conservative fold Unclear what their political capital is now though

Thanks NDP, instead of hearing from you this Fall on why you're cutting 30% of autistic kids off funding or what your plan for PSE is in response to the report you commissioned, I get to hear you campaign against trump and then ether go down in flames or pretend a mandate means never explaining.

While I think this is a stupid time to have an election, and it seems dirty to do one while there's no official leader for the opposition, it does seem like Findlay quit to try to stop a snap election, which also screams of playing politics.

Robert Jago@rjjago.bsky.social

AFAIK there’s no example in Canadian history of a PM/Premier calling a snap election when the opposition has no leader (snap with new leaders, sure). No leader? Custom has been to wait. So how voters react to what’s basically a dirty trick is unpredictable. Eby is gambling with BC.

When I first moved to Calgary in 2006, I would regularly tell people outside Alberta that things were weird but not as weird as they seemed from the outside. Now I tell people that they're weirder.

Emmett Macfarlane 🇨🇦@emmettmacfarlane.com

At the conference I attended this weekend there were a lot of panels on Alberta, the referendum, separatism, etc. To be clear, there were very sober, thoughtful experts, and my takeaway was this: 1/n

"At a tense caucus meeting Wednesday night, John Rustad and Claire Rattée called on Findlay to resign... On Thursday night, Findlay fired... Rustad, Rattée and Trevor Halford." Nothing says leadership like firing dissenters?

One of the many great things about our public broadcaster is we’re a big team. Here’s our breaking story that will be updated as more information comes in. In the meantime, I had a scheduled day of spa, fancy brunch and golf with friends to rest before the madness ahead, and I’m returning to it.
