Code Name: Viper is an action-platformer akin to Rolling Thunder, published by Capcom in the US but developed by Arc System Works - the same dev that ported Rolling Thunder from the arcade to Famicom for Namco. You start with only 2 hit points, and it's quite easy to lose them. youtu.be/DSsZD6stvgY

Surprise, surprise… Arc Systems Works also devolved the really good Rolling Thunder clone “Code Name Viper” too.

The fact that Arc System Works developed Rolling Thunder on the NES both blows my mind and totally makes sense

Batman: The Video Game was released in early 1990, shortly after the 1989 summer blockbuster film. A Sunsoft classic, it matches the dark aesthetic although doesn't follow the plot. The music slaps, and the controls are responsive making the necessary wall jumps a lot easier youtu.be/aWnKvF9cIBY

The Guardian Legend features a central labyrinth with an overhead action view as well as top-down shooter stages. Power-ups are throughout the labyrinth, along with locked doors. Keys are obtained from the shooter "corridors", which open up more areas of the map. youtu.be/c0oyereo5Ho

A teaser ad from late 1987 in Japan for Guardic Gaiden, an action adventure by Compile for the Nintendo Famicom Teasing a release date of January 29th the next year, the fate of Earth rests in the hands of a "powerful female warrior". Outside Japan, it would be known as The Guardian Legend.

The Guardian Legend! Or Guardic Gaiden in Japan! Mmm mm it's a vertical shoot'em up and a Zelda-ish exploring game in one! #theguardianlegend #guardicgaiden #miria #bluelander #compile #nes #nintendo #famicom #retro #retrogames #verticalshooter #art #videogames #1988 #irem #broderband #naju

XEXYZ is primarily an action platformer, but with side-scrolling shooter stages here and there. Pronounced 'ZEKS-eez', it was probably not the easiest cartridge to try and request as a gift back in the day. youtu.be/FaF9JUpa_hE

I also had this cartridge , it was basically Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers 2 for NES but you could also play with Mario, Luigi, Sonic and uh, Red Sonic (was that meant to be Tails?)

Sometimes I feel like investigating about the games I used to play as a kid, especially the ones I played in those romhack consoles like "Dynavision" and others that were so popular here in Brazil back in the 90s. Usually to find out they were mashups of different games (Somari for example).

Double Dragon 1. At one point I owned it on Sega Master System, Tiger Electronic Handheld, NES, Gameboy, DOS, Sega Genesis, and iOS. Also Double Dragon Advance is a GBA remake which I own, and there was a flip-phone port of that… so I bought it NINE TIMES?!?!🐲🐲

What's the most times you've ever bought a video game? Including ports, remasters, director's cuts, goty editions and such.

Doing some joystick maintenance today, and remembered that I’ve still got one of these: An SNK rotary stick. This one came with my Victory Road PCB way back when. I wish there was some easy way to convert it into a USB controller, but I wouldn’t know where to begin.
