I’ve been going to hot yin yoga every Tues, and while I cannot say I enjoy it while in it, it’s been a good exercise for my brain in sitting with discomfort, and I always sleep incredibly well after. This post brought to you by an annoyingly productive and clear-eyed morning after yin last night.

all of us just watched these university admins wield enormous power against palestinian student orgs, including unaffiliated ones, so these excuses land flatter than ever

Dolly Parton knew what it was like to struggle as she fought for working families her whole career. From providing free books to kids to giving working women our "9 to 5" anthem, she was an icon and an inspiration. Rest in power to our union sister. We will always love you.

I do not usually feel any real way about celebrity deaths but this one hurts. As a working class kid and a firm believer in the power of literacy and access to books, what a loss. RIP Dolly, national treasure.

I wish more journalists would point out that Sen. McConnell and Rep. Tom Kean (missed 4 months of work) are/were essentially on paid sick & medical leave. The same employment protection they’ve spent their careers blocking other Americans from having.

Incredible moment where Fox News puts up a graphic with all the reasons it opposes the DSA and why people should be afraid of them

Real feel of 107 at 10:30 am in the Hudson Valley. The AC at the Pilates studio broke this am so we had unintentional hot Pilates class at 9am. About to take the pups to our friends’s pool for respite. Stay safe and hydrated, my northeast peeps.

Love playing pharmacy bingo to get HRT patches refilled. After 2 days of calls/online research I’ve managed to secure the next 3 months’ supply. In Manhattan. I’ll be in for a day for work this week. None to be found within 2 hrs drive upstate and it’s a huge luxury to make a NYC trip for meds. 😡

I’ve been thinking of Marjane Satrapi often lately, and am heartbroken that she is gone. I had the privilege of working on Persepolis as an editorial assistant. She was brilliant and very funny, and I’m deeply sad that we don’t get to hear more of her voice. What a loss.

When we met she told me my name had made her think I’d look like Heather Locklear, and she jokingly called me that in our correspondence. I have fond memories of smoking at her book party at the French consulate in NYC, and visiting the Paris studio when she was making the film version of Persepolis

She was spiky, but also incredibly kind to a curious young editorial assistant still learning so many things about the world. She had a huge impact on me and so many others with her work and her friendship.

It is great to be in NYC when the Knicks are on fire. Everyone is wearing gear and strangers are talking to each other and fist bumping. Good energy and good antidote to all the other mess.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer at 65. 7 weeks from diagnosis until he died. This is an amazing breakthrough, and I hope it leads to even better treatment (and that the government starts funding research again someday when TFG and Brainworms are gone) : www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...

I would like for no newspaper to write any story about how we are ‘nearing a deal’ with Iran ever again. I’ve been reading a version of this headline in every major paper every other day for months and it’s some real Lucy pulling the football away shit they’re participating in.

This is so well said. It’s all fandoms, and also just that the social contract of how to behave in public spaces is utterly broken.

Saeed Jones@theferocity.bsky.social

I wonder if it’s this particular fandom, or all fandoms lately. Because something is wrong with all of us. And we’re carrying that “wrong” into spaces and topics that used to be joyful refuges.

If you have any spare cash, it’s a good time to make a donation to a nonprofit newsroom not attending the farce of a correspondents dinner. Some ideas at the link below.

I bought canned pineapple for a recipe and it said No Sugar Added, which I (naively) thought meant the pineapple would just be in its juice but no, it is in fucking Stevia syrup.

This thread on Alito's outrageously misrepresentation of the facts in the NY voting rights case is so damning. Alito's account was misleading to the point of falsity. And there's nothing anybody can do about it. He gets to toss around bogus claims without any consequence.

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

1/9: In the New York redistricting case, Justice Alito's justification for why #SCOTUS even had *jurisdiction* to issue a stay is based upon a remarkably misleading portrayal of the state court proceedings. I realize this is technical, but I wanted to write a short thread to explain the shadiness:

Friendly reminder: This is all unconstitutional.

In the past, sometimes presidents have said it’s just a military operation or limited airstrikes to skirt Congress. Trump has unilaterally launched major combat operations, declaring war with the goal of regime change. A major violation of the U.S. Constitution, also illegal under international law

Call your reps about this illegal act of war. I know it feels pointless (I mean, Schumer is one of my reps, I get it) but we have to keep trying.

NEW: Several high-ranking federal election officials attended a summit last week at which prominent activists who worked to overturn Trump’s loss in the 2020 election pressed for the president to declare a national emergency to take over the midterms.
