While we live through a Second Gilded Age, let us emerge bolder and wiser by learning from the past to reform; to break down barriers for the many; to unleash, with better vision for the future, a New Progressive Era!

“The Progressive movement sought to ‘restore a type of economic individualism and political democracy that was widely believed to have existed earlier in America and to have been destroyed by the great corporation and the corrupt political machine.’”

Though none of us remember the welcome mat laid out for us, here we are. And it is why we need to Build a New Progressive Era!

Trump's family has pocketed $3 billion in cash and gifts since the 2024 election.
Much of that came from crypto schemes as he deregulated the industry.
That money could pay for a full year of SNAP benefits for 1.3 million people, or more than 600 million free school lunches.

Vote angry. That’s what the progressive era was about. Heather Cox Richardson frequently talks Ally the patterns matching that time and that we’re due for an epochal shift in American governance. I say frequently that we need with a new figure like Theodore Roosevelt or the equivalent in Congress.
“I will note that the Gilded Age begat the Progressive Era, a period of unprecedented social and political reform in the early 20th century that rose from the backlash against the decadence and impunity of the previous era.”

“Although we talk about the framers and the reconstruction amendments, there's a whole series of amendments from the late 19th century and early 20th century that are literally driven by the people.” 🧵

And they were often subject to real corruption because the senators were so deeply bound to corporate interests at the state legislative level. And so the shift in the 17th Amendment to make senators popularly elected was about ridding Congress of corruption and giving the people a voice.”
“The reconstruction amendments are meant to entirely renegotiate the relationship between the federal government and the states and the federal government, the states and the people.
Then we have the Gilded Age amendments, which are entirely generated by the people.”

“The whole idea that the people have something to say about the Constitution, I think, is just really, really apparent, especially in those amendments that are passed during the Gilded Age. And one that I'm thinking of specifically is the 17th Amendment.
Most Americans don't realize that the popular election of senators is a relatively recent phenomenon. That came about with the 17th Amendment. Before that, state legislatures picked their senators…

They felt that tariffs were deeply regressive and disproportionately borne and impacted on the working class. And so they wanted a progressive income tax. And so the people got together and they agitated…
They ultimately created the momentum for the 16th Amendment, which amended Article 1 to allow for a progressive income tax, and that's where we get the income tax to this day. So it's not just about lawyers making claims on the Constitution. The people can do this too, and we've lost sight of that.”

The ppl decide that they've had it with certain things that the gov is doing. They were very angry about the consolidation of wealth & the rise of oligarchy in the middle of the Gilded Age. They were especially concerned that the federal government's principal means of raising revenue was tariffs.
Wealth inequality fast becomes a downward spiral if it isn’t addressed at a policy level.
We traced how antitrust, progressive tax, regulation and organised labour once constrained the barons of the Gilded Age and what happened when those counterweights were stripped back.
For decades, economic policy has too often relied on tax cuts, deregulation, and the assumption that markets will deliver shared prosperity for everyone.
Roosevelt has spent years building a different approach. In the weeks ahead, we'll make the case for a governing agenda that shifts power.
Billionaire families have spent $1.7 BILLION on the 2026 midterms so far — a 5,200% increase since the 2010 midterms.
Citizens United is among the worst decisions in history. It corrupts our system every day.
Big Money is the root of our dysfunction.
The disaster of our current era is not impending: It is here and ongoing.
A New Progressive Era cannot wait for elections or magnetic personalities to come to the rescue.
Never forget this: The forces rigging our economy, undermining our democracy, polluting our planet, and stoking hatred are counting on you to give up. Cynicism is how they win. Stay clear-eyed and ready for the fight ahead.
It is hard to reconcile Trump's consternation about meatpacker monopolies and his support for the proposed merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery.

Analyst: James Talarico teaming up with Mark Cuban is really interesting. He’s going after Big Pharma and coming up with a healthcare solution that people haven't talked about before, which is to break up the healthcare monopolies through antitrust. I think that's a really smart move.
The massive nationwide electricity rate hikes aren’t happening simply because utility services have gotten more expensive or customers have been receiving better service.
It’s because utility monopolies have bought off the system that’s supposed to keep them in check.
“…and what was in sausage meat was a terrifying mystery. In the early twentieth century, middle-class Americans demanded regulation of the food and drug industry, ushering in the reforms that we now call the Progressive Era.”
We've seen this movie before, during the Gilded Age. And the result was the Progressive Era.
If @democrats.org can get their act together, we might have Progressive Era II.
a big diff. between 'then' and 'now' is the lack of a muckraking journalism class (a la Sinclair Lewis) and strong leadership among the working class trades (a la John Lewis). can't have a progressive labor movement that is ONLY coming from politicians, imho.

The Gilded Age and the Progressive Era represent a connected sequence in American history where extreme industrial growth and corruption led directly to sweeping social and political reforms.
We are ripe for another sweep of reforms.

An Amazon worker died in one of Amazon's warehouses.
As he lay on the floor dying, management told the other workers: "Just turn around and don't look. Get back to work."
That was a human being. A child of God. Sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed.
Most Democrats today have little conception or memory of how bold the party was before Reagan.
I give you the 1972 Democratic Party platform’s full-throated endorsement of federally administered, nationalized healthcare.
The party dropped that, pivoting to “universal” coverage—without the teeth.
The Democratic Party’s mega-donor class is horrified by the rising tide of progressive populism.
Too bad.
It's time they recognize the real choice is between democracy and tyranny, between an economy that works for all or one that works for a small sliver at the top.
The Gilded Age came crashing down with the Panic of 1893, which set off an economic depression that ushered in the sweeping reforms of the Progressive Era.

the last time we had something similar to this was the Gilded Age 1.0.
Then we had:
massive wealth inequality
media capture
vast corruption in politics
extreme oligarcy.
When we woke up, we got:
THE NEW DEAL AND THE PROGRESSIVE ERA AND 80 YEARS OF DEMOCRATIC PROGRESS.
History tends to repeat.
I told you that you would miss the Progressive Era if you voted for the Gilded Age.
Objectively kind of impressive how fast business has started killing and maiming people once Elon Musk murdered the federal regulatory state, though.

Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.
Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.
A key part of the transition from the Gilded Age into the Progressive Era was a cultural/rhetorical shift away from individualism toward social responsibility.
The argument for universal healthcare is the same argument for K-12 education. It benefits *us* as a country when everyone is covered.
The parallels to our current situation are almost unbelievable. Yes -- as we have been taught by Heather Cox Richardson and Joanne Freemen among others -- we can learn a lot from our history.
