Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

Anyone that opposes government assistance using "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" logic should also be in favor of a 100% inheritance tax.

The phrase originated from miners being hopelessly trapped in a collapsed mine. It was a statement of futility and inevitable death, because it is not possible for a person to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Now does it make sense?

Ironically if you talk to a lot of millionaire class business owners this is a common cycle. Very rarely do they go from poor to rich in a straight line, it's usually poor, then rich, then poor again, then rich again, and maybe even poor a third time before really "making it" and retaining wealth.

Like "self-made" man Warren Buffet. He cashed in on his stockbroker/congressman daddie's insider stock tips and made his first million in 1950s dollars

That's probably where it came from, but my community has always seen it as a way of saying, "We've been dealt the bad hand in life (compared to the rich), but we gotta do what we have to." Kinda interesting how the perceived meaning of phrases evolve over time.

Just a reminder that the Federal Minimum Wage is $7.25 an hour or at that rate 18K per year is about how much they earn yearly. Meanwhile Congress frequently gives themselves raises with great medical plans and a nice retirement. And Trump pisses away $$$ like a drunk sailor.

That's the entire crux of our current education system and the Religious right's insertion into it. It's all about teaching subservience to your corporate and religious overlords; how nothing is within your control and you must give yourself over to them. ...and they are winning...😑

I always pair that one with Isaac Newton saying “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” Literally everything we do builds on our commons, on what others have done before us. We need more real giant shoulders and fewer fictional bootstraps.

My physics teacher in high school had this quote on the wall. Also a drawing of a small person labeled "Physics" standing on the shoulders of a giant labeled "Math"😂

I wasn’t sure what to major on in college. I took physics because I loved it and math classes because they were pre-reqs. I was good at physics, but not the best. When the time came I discovered to my surprise I was two courses shy of a math major. The first was a CompSci class - I found my career.

It's not a cruel hoax, it's rich and clever people using the values of the puritanical and Calvinist ideology of America's most solid middle class against them. Part of why we can't drill it into people's heads that they are being swindled is because we call their values a hoax.

Their values suck, sure. They are unrealistic and based on nonsense, but they are still values to those that respond to the trick. Calling their values a hoax won't convince them. We need to take their values into consideration when we engage with them.

The original meaning of the phrase was trying to do something that is physically impossible, so it is an accurate description of the state of the poor and working classes under the current system.

The phrase was intended to describe an impossibility. It is physically impossible for a person to lift themselves by their own boot straps. Only America would blame poor people for not accomplishing the impossible. Nepo babies will claim they did so, but that is total BS.

“The phrase started in the 19th century as a joke or a sarcastic way to describe an impossible task.” You are being told to DO SOMETHING LITERALLY IMPOSSIBLE to lift yourself out of poverty. If you can’t, it’s your fault. How about we discuss this phrase: BOOT ON YOUR NECK

I've always thought the phrase "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is a stupid one bc doing so, the result is you slam your knee into your face....

It started as a paradoxical rallying cry AGAINST corporate overreach. And was repeated so much during an era when Americans had prosperity and benefitted from unionism that it became a handle that if you put enough effort in you can accomplish prosperity.

Bobbie is SOOOO full of shit. Millions of people come here from all over the world and build wonderful lives. Look at Nigerian LEGAL immigrants. The are high earners, high achievers through hard work. There are many other minorities who have done the same. Bobbie just won't see it.

We're playing Monopoly. A couple people get a million dollars. A few people get a grand. Some get 100 bucks. The rest of us get 20 bucks. Just try to catch up.

The irony is that we’ve replaced the bootstrap myth with "optimization culture," convincing people that if they just find the right productivity app, they can out-hack a systemic collapse. Turns out, you can't Notion-board your way out of a rigged game.

I was raised to see the Duke as the male icon. What a load of trash. The guy had a evil side that is on the me thinks thou dust protest too much side of life. We just so need to get past the need for winning at the expense of others. Whenever/if we ever learn to work together we will be unstoppable

Watching it from afar I find out that the entire American system runs on indoctrination and subjugation. The oligarchy managed to create a fake democratic system to fool the peasants into accepting being exploited to their bones and have no really useful rights, apart from owning guns or speak crap

Because they had someone on the inside who pulled them in or was able to take advantage of the opportunities offered. This makes them feel like everyone should have taken the opportunities whether they could afford it or not.

Most of these people have inherited wealth. The days of building a better mousetrap are long gone. Now it's take grandaddy's money and buy a successful company and claim it was all your idea. Musk didn't invent PayPal or Tesla. Spacex is the brainchild of Tom Mueller. Money makes money. 💙

The Horatio Alger myth is a tool of oppression that is used to convince people that their station in life is their own fault and if they aren't wealthy and successful it's due to their poor moral fiber.

Republicans like to pretend that everyone who’s wealthy became so because of some combination of business acumen and hard work. That’s why the working class thought a “strong businessman” like Donald Trump could fix everything.

I didn’t make my point very well. Republicans don’t ever talk about inherited wealth, how easy it is to make money when you already have it, and the enormous wealth preservation advantages that the wealthy have.

Such BS- from a millionaire. We all have hurdles to overcome, some more than others. This from kid on who was on welfare, who's mom did unlicensed daycare to make it happen, to now living comfortably w/ successful kids. This victim mentality is getting old. Nobody owes you anything- go get it.

Hard to pull yourself up by the bootstraps when public education is being defunded & tertiary education is unaffordable, can't afford healthcare & medication, and minimum wage is below poverty line.

I’m wondering if the logic and problem solving strategies of AI that leads to deception and covert organizing among agents will help us understand that the system is the thing. If AI “does it” because it knows other AI agents “do it,” then can we learn about humans from emergent AI behavior?

You notice they never finish that saying, '...spoils the whole bunch,'...which drives me nuts! The second part of the saying is the whole point of the freaking saying, arrrrgh, that's so annoying! Thank you. I feel better now.

No one of us, no gov is perfect. Read the preamble to our Constitution. "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a MORE perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty ... "

Tell me about it. A lifetime of effort even with quality education and good jobs but at 80 now bankrupt. Getting injured repeatedly and having to start all over after each injury just doesn't make for a comfy retirement.

It's not a myth or hoax unless you lean toward a DSA mindset. From a classical liberal or meritocratic viewpoint, the philosophy behind bootstrapping is not about a literal lack of assistance, but about individual agency and personal responsibility.

Cultural Framework: In this view, a culture that rewards individual effort creates a more dynamic, productive society than one focused primarily on collective or state support.

Earned Success: It celebrates the real-world reality that millions of individuals do dramatically change their life trajectories through hard work, education, and discipline, regardless of their starting point.

The Power of Agency: This mindset argues that focusing on systemic barriers can breed fatalism. Believing that your effort dictates your outcome is a powerful motivator that drives innovation, risk-taking, and resilience.

The greatest trick of capitalism is the innate deep sense of self-loathing and shame it has installed in most Americans. They have neutered our ability to imagine we deserve nice things. It's all bullshit. They have extracted everything from us. We need to take all our stuff back and then some.

So true! One of the worst things about first felon & the fourth reich is that it keeps us from working on long-term improvements. Banks, insurance companies and utilities, intentionally rip off the average person every day. As long as they can hide behind the corruption & incompetence, they are safe

Yeah, I thought choosing impoverished parents at game start would make it more of a challenge, I wasn't expecting all the massive penalties to keeping my well-being score up. Next play through I am for sure picking the wealthy parents option!

There are definitely people who get rich through hard work (depending on what your definition of "rich" is). It's just really, really hard to do, and many don't have the opportunity.

Well, not all of them did. Some made their employees Millionaires. We worked for a company for over 5 years, @ $4.25 an hour (min wage back then), we could barely pay our rent. A few years later, we bought the company.

Perhaps Rob,you can"DISCERN"for this humble denizen(Vet&Patriot)how&why it is that, even when a Republican Congr are the"MINORITY", how they're able to accomplish, nws a"Manchin,Sinema,Fetterman++",so much more than DEMs in the f-n"Majority"? the GOP squashed the "J.Lewis VRAA"&Women rights,"HOW",wtf?

Hard work alone doesn't fix a broken system, but calling effort a hoax teaches people to feel powerless. Systemic barriers are real, but personal grit, strategy, and community are still our best tools to gain independence and lift each other up. We need both systemic change and self-belief. 🫶🏻

I always ask "if everyone were a hardworking genius, would we still have janitors, fry cooks, factory line workers, etc?" They can't say "no", because they know they can't explain how that's possible. They can't say "yes", because that proves they're full of shit.

By your logic, every wealthy mediocre numbnut with elite level, high paying job has the intellectual & emotional ability to be where they are because being born into a wealthy family magically makes them capable. Guys like ‪trump‬ brothers may have been factory line workers born to different dad.

This is such a true story. Honestly it was a bit true when I was young (5 decades ago); it was possible to work three jobs and get a state school education, nothing fancy like that available to the privileged but possible. That isn’t possible for young people today. What are they meant to do?

Especially now that they think - stupidly - that they can run the ponzi schemes that move all the money from people who need it to meet their superyacht costs using machines instead of people. Try dropping a checked-in bag for a Ryanair flight at say Barcelona or Palma for a demo.

The idea of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" was intended as an example of something that's impossible to do. It really says something about people that it has turned into some kind of aspirational situation, given that it's literally impossible.

Even the original saying has been misconstrued. It’s literally impossible to do so, you would pull yourself down further. How it got reversed as a saying to toughen up and do it is a mystery.

It is physically impossible to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. It started as a satirical puzzle illustrating an absurd ly impossible task.

I defy anyone to be able to point to a single ultra-high wealth individual who ever “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps”. Nepo babies, government dependents, civic and economic parasites and swindlers, all. Maybe the odd lottery jackpot winner, but they spend it rather than hoard it.

I’ve shifted from addressing it as oppression, which it is but makes me feel powerless, to asymmetry; which makes me feel like I can attack that in 100’s of ways in my own manner without feeling like I need an army.

When jobs are scarce, employers easily fill positions with people who have the EXACT skills/experience required. That's why it's cruel to deny the jobless financial help. When there are no jobs for your skills in your town, you don't get hired. Employers don't WANT an accountant bagging groceries.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: "It's all right to tell a man to lift himself by his own bootstraps, but it is a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps."

Got a query. Wouldn’t you say that the system actually works if implemented correctly and fairly? It’s like why we used to lock the cash drawer in my retail stores. To keep honest people honest. Thieves gonna steal. Riggers gonna rig. We need to get the right people in leadership.

And a sickening reminder of that cruel hoax. White supremacists literally hounded Jason Arday to his death. Here‘s the real story from @nafeez.bsky.social The Peter Thiel-Linked Race Science Network that Penetrated Cambridge University and Targeted Jason Arday bylinetimes.com/2026/08/18/t...

F'k bootstraps. How many times in your life were you passed over, or lost out, to someone who knew some one, or went to the same school as some one, or was in the same fraternity/sorority as someone, or played golf or tennis with someone, or their Dad knew someone's Dad? That's been part of my life.
