I wish I had so much more room to write about the walkalong I took with the Downtown Community Safety Partnership last month. I learned a lot, but also got to witness firsthand the respect the city has for these patrols. 1/2

2/2 The training/lived experience they have is unmatched, and they handle every situation with the utmost compassion. Every city could benefit from having their own DCSP. Take a read and learn about them: Downtown’s heart and soul www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews...

I wrote a column trying to capture what it felt like, witnessing Ukrainian defenders being returned home. One of the most emotionally confronting experiences I've had as a journalist; an ocean of intermingled grief, love, trauma, desperation, joy, hope. www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews...

Upfeat’s response to this story is wild. They deleted the library renovation “coverage” mentioned here. The librarian I spoke to was deeply disturbed to have a quote attributed to her that she never said. But sure, making stuff up about real people and places is a net good…

More incredible reporting from @jeffkhamilton.bsky.social as part of the Classroom Confidential series: “The school has a duty of care for the children when the parents aren’t there,” the mother said. “Everything they did was wrong. There’s no other way to say it.”

Proud this morning to see two of my stories from last year recognized with National Newspaper Award nominations. The first, about the second-generation cut-off, which has been referred to as a genocide “in paper form” for First Nations people. www.winnipegfreepress.com/featured/202...

Big news today: the Free Press media literacy and learning project has been selected as finalist for an International News Media Association Global Media Award in the Best Public Service Project category. The awards will be handed out in May in Berlin. This is...uh...bananas. And awesome.

Scoop: The province quietly updated its regulations to allow for institutional safety officers to be stationed at MB Hydro and MB Housing buildings. The change came right before an armed man attacked a Hydro employee at its downtown HQ. @winnipegfreepress.com #wfp

I am honoured to announce I’ve been appointed as a member to the Order of Canada. Thank you to everyone for the support! I dedicate this to my late Mom who taught me so much about history, local independent media & research. I know that she would be, like me, screaming with joy! #orderofcanada

If you trekked all the way to school this morning for work/learning, only for it to be cancelled -- my DMs are open!

It is seemingly all quiet on the eastern front as a wildfire rages in Lac du Bonnet. Thank you to everyone who shared their story with me today.
