I’m still excited to see You Can See Everything, but I gotta say the discourse around Oppenheim’s ethical violations is really bumming me out. Documentarians survive off of the trust others give us, not taking advantage of people like some capitalistic vulture

As an editor who uploads to Vimeo regularly for work. Bending Spoons has been doing exactly what we thought they would and slowly enshittifying it. Almost every time i need to upload a new version i have to reflesh, flip back and forth between versions, or even upload twice before seeing change.

@reckless.bsky.social "Sure, but your phone doesn't have a light" My friend is a senior engineer for the Meta Glasses; told me he and his team have brought up many ways to their bosses on how to implement the light in a way that can't just be covered up by tape but are told thats not a priority.

Camp Wilderness and Midwest Hemophilia Association are out here showing the world that you CAN have a camp for children with bleeding disorders in 2026 without mountains of red tape in the way of fun.

“The Big Stick” was the event that bleeding disorders camp used to revolve around. The stick, is an intravenous shot. It is, what a nurse once told me, a deeply “unnatural act” to try and put a piece of metal inside your own vein. - Nicholas Van Buren

"It's really hard to tell a seven year old that you can't do the same things your peers are doing... so coming to a place like this, everybody's the same, we're no different than anybody else here." James Harbert, Camp Wilderness counselor #bleedingdisorders #hemophilia #vwd #chronicillness

Ah, Excelsior Springs, Missouri. A short drive away from Kansas City and the place where I learned that my camera lenses can fog up just as much as my glasses when the humidity is high enough.

Over the next few weeks you'll see video from this camp, their crazy games, unique rituals, their devotion to teaching children with bleeding disorders practical life skills, and snippets from interviews I've taken with kids, counselors, nurses, and staff alike.

The final days of camp are filled with with a pure distillation of joy, bonding, and bittersweet goodbyes. If you hadn't been to camp before, you are now wholeheartedly accepted into the greater camp family.

If you have old bleeding disorder camp photos or video and would be willing to share them with the world, I'm on the search for archival material for my upcoming documentary feature film The Big Stick! If you do, please reach out to us at: info@factoreight.org

When I started this project, I was genuinely worried that camps like this were disappearing. Camp H.O.N.O.R. is the reason I know that's not the whole story. — Nicholas Van Buren

"I think nature is a huge, important part of being in this planet. You have to understand how things work, there's animals running around, there's little critters, there's things you gotta be prepared for. It kinda helps you be prepared, which is a huge thing about being a hemophiliac" Andrew Heinze

While it's true that men and boys tend to suffer the worst of the symptoms from this hemophilia, that doesn't mean that women and girls don't have potentially life-threatening issues that will affect them for their entire lives.

"There's a lot of adults I've met that never have been to a camp. They've never been uncomfortable at a talent show in front of a bunch of people they've been hanging out with all week. They've never had to [try] to figure out how to be independent when you're 10 years old." - Andrew Heinze

The very center of bleeding disorders camp is the "self-infusion", and it's at the very center of my film. "The Big Stick" is a term used all across the US for the first time that a bleeding disorders patient is able to self-infuse, that is to stick themselves in a vein with a needle.

"I was thrown away by trees. The only trees I knew were lampposts. All my whole life was just sidewalks and concrete and asphalt. So to see trees, and to see clear skies and to see stars , it was really like throwing me on another planet." - Tony Hernandez.

"When you talk about camp to non-camp people, they're just like, 'That's so fun.' And I'm like, 'But it's not just fun. It's weird. It's like a wormhole.'... I feel like one week out of the year, I'm home. It fills my cup so hardcore." - Venus Alvar

"Camp teaches you to do so many things that that cannot be taught really in school, it's an experiential way of learning. You learn things by doing, you learn how to how to make friends, how to resolve conflicts, and how to be silly and not take things so seriously. "- Andy Blackledge

Now for an event that Camp H.O.N.O.R. is known for THE SLIME FIGHT! Who doesn't want to throw multicolored slime around at your friends and family, and of course, while everybody has white shirts on! #chronicillness #bleedingdisorders #thebigstick

"Where the slime fight started. Mike wanted to crash everyone and slime everything and then bring everyone down and then be like, OK, guys, let's take a time out. Remember Jose. Yeah, great guy right? Unfortunately, we did lose Kelly. I'm sorry." - Tony Hernandez

Thousands of people with bleeding disorders have been lost over the decades due to medicine tainted with HIV. My documentary, The Big Stick covers this period of time and the summer camps that became support groups for the victims.

After a long, full day at Camp H.O.N.O.R. I sat down with Destinee Orville. "It's basically Christmas in July. Bleeding Disorders Camp, it's special." It can be easy to overlook how much a chronic illness affects not only those with the condition, but the entire family, loved ones, and friends.

"Once you connect with another girl who's had in the same situation, you kinda create that bond... I have a lot of friends who don't have blood disorders, and it's like there's that gap... they're not gonna understand me the way the people here understand me." Ariel Aguilar

I grew up at summer camps like this one. I'm a severe hemophiliac, and these weeks are where I learned to take care of myself and found a community I'm still part of today. More to come!

literally all netflix needs to do is stop trying to reinvent the wheel and just start hiring actually talented execs to greenlight genuinely good entertainment people will watch instead of trying to craft entertainment from user data (another plug for my avclub piece this week 💃🏻)

I need to know why we are so limited by LLMs in terms of how we prompt and the level of depth we want. Why are the only options; 1. low effort, possibly incorrect or shallow answer, or 2. high effort, TED talk thesis paper with 10 pages of information i don't need?

A good time to remind the world this man is a Russian asset.

This is flying under the radar: Donald Trump FIRED the DOJ official in charge of suing Live Nation-Ticketmaster for monopolizing ticketing and hiking prices. Then, their stock jumped. If Trump's DOJ takes it easy on Ticketmaster, it'll be a slap in the face to every American.

As a filmmaker I've been asking myself a lot lately, has youtube and tiktok changed the way we make documentaries? Think about the self-led documentary, Michael Moore, Werner Herzog, Supersize Me, etc. Do those types of films exist anymore or have they been relegated to the Youtube vlogger?
