Loves history. Radical Qing monarchist?
My 2026 prediction: Dems win the House.
My 2026 hot take: Dems take the Senate through AK, NC, OH, ME.
My 2028 hit take: Ruben Gallego over Nikki Haley.
My vague sense of DSA dynamics is that the folks I know in local chapters are like earnest lefties and the things I see on here about the national folks make them seem like insane cosplayers
People always have such a derogatory view of voters in the aggregate because they spent too much time rage-reading NYT’s cherry picked portrayals.
But in the aggregate the median voter is pretty stupid but they aren’t completely infantile and are quite capable of discerning these kinds of stuff.
Ethics aside, this take could use some contact with reality. Biden's expanded CTC didn't motivate recipients to vote to maintain it. Trump offered $5000 checks and it hurt him in the polls.
The empirical claim that welfare creates single issue voters just doesn't hold up.

Fukuda Yasuo, prime minister from 2007-2008 and a lifelong advocate for closer relations between Japan and its neighbors, passed away at ninety years old. He was memorialized across the political spectrum at home and remembered fondly in Beijing.

a weird set of people who only exist online are people who celebrate the defeat of global fascism in every other country and are then horrified and appalled at the idea that they should also be expected to vote for their domestic opponent of global fascism if some of their stances are Problematic
The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.
Last week, I met with young leaders from the My Brother's Keeper Alliance at the Obama Presidential Center. They shared more about the work they’re doing at school, their goals for the future, and even gave me an update on their class elections. Take a look!
New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility.

I’ve been bragging to Bsky for a while now but what makes my daughter special is she’s already 3K nerd and I will be intensely focused on fostering that passion as she grows up.
So I watched this Chinese movie about some dudes traveling back in time to kidnap Qin Shi Huang,
And there was a scene where a tacticool dude waded into a bunch of fully armed Qin soldiers and started to beat them up in melee and had to turn it off.
Watching NHK world in a hotel and really wish it was more like actual NHK instead of CNN-lite with a Japanese anchor who speaks flawless American English.
Because there are 10s of thousands of Democratic electeds in the United States, and you have positioned yourself directly into a media environment that is designed to find every statement a Democrat makes that is even vaguely transphobic as soon as it happens.
My theory is with rising interest rates there’s just gonna be less cash in general, and so frivolous spending like on influencers are the first to go.
It’s amusing but it’s the story of everything. People just took the good economy for granted and did everything they can to undermine it.
I didn't realize there was a sharp downturn in Youtube influencer ad and sponsorship revenue. May be an underrated contribution to both the "why are economic vibes are terrible" conversation and the "why did Gen Z turn on Trump" conversation youtu.be/vCMfltmszHY?...
A 75,000-year-old Neanderthal from Shanidar Cave, Iraqi Kurdistan, shows evidence of a potentially lethal spear wound, offering rare insight into violence among our ancient relatives. The findings are published in Scientific Reports. 🧪🏺
Immensely funny in an ironic way that far-right nationalism has become far more internationalist than communism ever was because of the Internet and Social Media.
Since we’re on ME discourse I have a (maybe hot?) take.
I don’t think BioWare or the fans themselves truly understood why ME was so popular
What made ME was the characters. And one of BioWare’s mistakes was assuming it was the settings the fans loved, and not the characters.
After hearing news of BioWare's closure on Wednesday, over 75,000 Mass Effect fans have signed a petition demanding that EA put another studio in charge of the franchise or license out the IP. https://bit.ly/4siIubW
Of course there’s duds! But because you’re inventing new worlds over and over again you can start anew. Explore new themes. Not be chained down by previous narrative choices, and just focus on making a great character ensemble.
But it’s why people still remember Tales of Symphonia and Abyss.
Of course the other side of the “corporation” is, while BioWare became chained to a few IP, Tales games have also started to be chained to a few “character archetypes” which proved popular previous. Those who have played Tales games knows all the types…

I see this in DA too where BioWare kept on trying to re-use a setting but it never simply had the magic of the original because, while the setting is truly great, it was the characters and the cast that truly made fans emotionally invested.
It’s what made ME1-3 special and why Andromeda was meh.
Now compared to the Tales franchise, where the focus isn’t re-using settings, it’s to create memorable characters. Many tales games have been made, all in different worlds, but they all are character-driven and thus each of them have dedicated fanbases.
In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.
between serbia, brazil, and hopefully november 3, a good reminder: voting works
it’s not the end, there’s always work to be done after the vote, but if you want to beat the motherfuckers and keep them out of power: vote your asses off
pundits are basically bored by the idea that these democratic candidates are not meaningfully behind with black voters and so are trying to conjure a controversy into existence
he’s also given multiple speeches on this and has really been trying with outreach both during the primary and now.
I think the media just really wants Black voters to abandon Dems. Talarico had more time to show this narrative was completely bunk but it really mirrors that coverage too
interestingly this interest in black voters doesn’t extend to the republican effort to deprive them of federal representation, nor do they seem interested in asking whether republican candidates are burdened by the fact that trump talks like a klansman
marine corps boards crossing out their instructions "expel trans marines" and writing in "we keep this trans marine" is, frankly, a great example of what it means that a society is more than just its government
There’s many really good reasons why 3K, above all the other periods of conflicts in China, became the most popular worldwide.
It’s because the history lent itself to a spectacularly dramatic narrative, where
1. A vast set of interesting characters. Guan Yu, Zhuge Liang, Zhou Yu, Sima Yi…
Perhaps the conflict that comes closest to 3K is the Chu-Han contention. It has many similarities (cast of characters, dramatic historical events, tragic ending) and it also has a strong cultural following.
But these are the reasons why, Li Shimin or Zhao Kuanyin’s stories doesn’t resonate as much.
Quick addendum: being the underdog and struggling against overwhelming odds is legit important to make a dramatic narrative! Which is why the manga Kingdom treats Qin like the “underdog” instead of the inevitable juggernaut that was Qin in actual history.

3. The story has many low points for the protagonists and ultimately has a tragic ending. Unlike Tang or Song reunification, which were inevitable beyond a certain point, Liu Bei goes through many lows, perseveres, and yet ultimately still does not succeed. It’s gripping and dramatic.
4. Genuinely cool historical feats of valor. Lu Bu actually shot an arrow through the Halbard! Guan Yu really did kill Yan Liang, then told Cao Cao he was leaving to rejoin Liu Bei. Those are real history. Engrossing without needing embellishments.

Even minor characters like Wang Yun and Diao Chan. They are all memorable and *differetiated*.
2. Strong antagonist to act as a foil. Cao Cao is a very charismatic villain, and a figure like him simply does not exist in say, Li Shimin or Zhao Kuanyin’s stories.
