As someone who was in a frat at Cornell a decade ago, here is my perspective on this situation: it’s bad, absolutely tragic for the woman involved, but it was preventable and more REAL steps should be taken to prevent these kinds of things. Here’s some context on the frat scene, from my perspective.

Our new commentary rdcu.be/ftx6h in @natecoevo.nature.com written with folks from @inaturalist.bsky.social and @cornellbirds.bsky.social shows that use of AI to manipulate existing or create new wildlife images undermines the huge value of vast citizen science databases. 🌍🪰🪶 #Ornithology 🧵 1/10

Biggest invasive blue catfish I’ve gotten my hands on yet at 57 lbs! My lab will be using tissue samples to learn more about their reproduction, growth, nutrition, & diet! We put in work electrofishing with the @marylanddnr.bsky.social to find the fish today, but it paid off after a 14 hr work day!

No, I have not seen a snake do a barrel roll… but I need to see more of it!

New paper in @pnas.org ! 🐟 Fish swim faster when they beat their tails faster... but not in a straight line, like we've assumed since 1958. It bends at low speeds, and the shape of the body wave matters a lot! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

Red-lipped Batfish are indeed real, but the quote-posted video below and many you will find online are pure AI slop. Instead, enjoy this excellent and informative video with actual footage of these cool fishes.

some nightmare fuel before you hit the sack. not AI. it’s a red-lipped batfish. no really. (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-lip...)

When someone told me they had a clingfish/skilletfish for me to add to the fish/vertebrate teaching collection, I was thrilled… until they handed me an adorable, tiny live one (I thought it would be dead). Unfortunately, the lil guy is too cute, so I have to keep it as a pet. What should I name it?🐟

Overall, we found they are apex, generalist predators that eat a lot of blue crabs, white perch, and threatened river herring, but will really eat anything they come across: ducks, turtles, rocks, sticks, striped bass, plants, etc. If it fits in their mouths, they will eat it if they have a chance.🐟

Recently, I joined the @marylanddnr.bsky.social for their annual endangered Atlantic sturgeon spawning population survey, which used gill nets with 12.5-14” mesh! This mesh is so large (to let anything smaller than a sturgeon swim through) that it came from an arctic narwhal monitoring project!!!

While people think planting native plants is just good to bring more butterflies, it also brings other animals to the yard. When we first watched a box turtle eating wild berries in our yard, we wanted more of that, so we planted a bunch of native berry bushes, and it seemed to have worked 🐢

Peter is a fantastic scientist, and more importantly, a fantastic person. Learn a bit more about him in this piece. 🐠🐟

Check out this lovely profile of the University of California, Davis’s Peter Wainwright, whose lifelong fascination with fishes inspired a remarkable career in research and teaching. Peter was my postdoc advisor years ago when he was at Florida State University, and is awesome dude and mentor.

An awesome example of how to use natural history collection specimens and their support staff to fundraise. Here is Samantha Rickle, a researcher and technician with the Bishop Museum’s Ichthyology team showing off a unique deep-sea anglerfish Gigantactis paresca that was described by her.

My favorite emails from students are those with the subject, “What fish is this?” Here, we have a skilletfish, our local clingfish species that uses is suction cup-like pelvic fins to stick under crevices and in shells.

I’ve been a little quiet on here for the last few months because I’ve been cranking away at my tenure and promotion application over this time, easily the longest application I’ve ever compiled. However, I just submitted it and hope to be back sharing more fishy content on here soon! After some rest

Check out our new paper on Neurodivergent Perceptions, Experiences, and Perspectives in Academic Biological Science Spaces!!

I am beyond excited to share that our paper, "Neurodivergent Perceptions, Experiences, and Perspectives in Academic Biological Sciences Spaces" has been published! A 🧵incoming because this paper is so special to me and the co-authors. doi.org/10.1093/icb/...

I’m hosting my 5th Annual Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby this Saturday, July 18th! This event is FREE to the public thanks to our sponsors CCA MD & Salisbury U, aimed at encouraging people to catch & eat invasive fishes like blue catfish. Scan the QR code for more info or search Facebook! 🐟🎣

Funding science education projects, while paying local artists for their work, while making you all look cool as hell in marine biology shirts, is shrimply the best way to make good stuff happen. At least I think so. Speaking of which... Have you seen our latest shirt?? SquidFacts.net

It’s that time of year again.. if you see turtles crossing roads/out in the open/digging, they are doing their normal behavior. They are searching for a spot to lay some eggs. Leave it be, unless it’s in a road, then carefully pick it up & move it to the other side in the direction it was going 🐢

My neighbor didn’t know what was going on with this snapping turtle so I did a welfare check on this one. A few hours later, it was done and I thought it was back in the water. Nope, somehow it got into my garage and got tangled up in a fishing net. I quickly freed her and she is back in the lake

Residents in Fayette County, Georgia noticed their water pressure was unusually low. Turns out that a data center 20 miles away had been drawing 30 million gallons of water in secret through connections the county didn't know existed. Is it any wonder why so many are opposed to data centers?

When I tell people who are older than me that I’m a professor, I get “oh so you’re in school to be a prof?” more often than “what do you teach/research?” 🤦‍♂️ I’m finishing my 5th year now & apply for tenure in the fall. At what point/age will people start believing that I have the job I say I have??

I made a new online store on RedBubble because I wanted to get some new tank tops for summer and thought it would be cool to have some with my artwork on them! Check out my shop for a variety of products, from clothing to stickers to bucket hats to aprons and more! I’ll slowly be adding new pieces!🐡

Carp be out here spawning… thought a bunch of fish were blowing up on topwater and got excited with my frog lure… until I realized it’s carp spawning season and the carp are chasing each other around and spawning on the shoreline 🐟 🎣

Polarized sunglasses are a must have for fishing or any form of aquatic/marine research because they help cut the glare, allowing you to more easily see through the water. Behold their power!
