In my latest for Reactor, I explore the history of nonbinary pronouns in science fiction, and why all my books have nonbinary characters.

Reactor Magazine@reactorsff.bsky.social

"The road to normalization is always beset by clowns and brigands of various sorts. But it also contains wonders." Author @annaleen.bsky.social discusses the evolution of neopronouns in science fiction, from The Left Hand of Darkness to The Empress of Salt and Fortune:

Happiest of birthdays to you, my friend @suntorya.bsky.social 💓💓💓 I’m so grateful you’ve welcomed me into your full and beautiful life. You’re brilliant and spirited and caring and an all-around delight to be around, and I hope you have a magical (and restful lol) day!

Just did my civic duty by standing in line for two (2) hours at the one (1) voting location in Toronto lmao. We do need all the good vibes y’all can spare today

If possible, send good vibes to Brazil today! 🤞 We're under threat of having the far right making a comeback in the Elections today (with the US financial and political support).

Congrats! An incredible lineup of stories & people

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

It takes a village—every writer in the issue, every editor who dug deep into a story or poem, our formidable first reading team, our copyeditors, our production and website folks, our marketing team, our leadership. I’m forgetting people for sure. Everyone at @augursociety.bsky.social works magic.

As we're getting into the back half of 2026 do think about whether there's any works you'd recommend for the Otherwise Award for SFF "that expands or explores our understanding of gender". The jury can't consider works they aren't aware of so do give them a heads up of stuff they shouldn't miss.

He was appalled by the examination system, when it was explained to him, he could not imagine a greater deterrent to the natural wish to learn than this pattern of cramming in information and disgorging it on demand.

I spoke to an Ingram rep about this and it is, unfortunately, a real thing that they are forcing us all to do. Shit like this shouldn't be "opt out" and if you just happen to miss the notice the machines eat your art 🤬

Like all Canadian government surveys on AI, this is hilariously pro-AI. But it only takes like 5 minutes to fill out, and at the end you can make it clear that the only focus of the government when it comes to AI and culture is that Canadian artists need copyright protections from AI scraping.

Sonja Boon@storiedselves.bsky.social

Canadian arts and culture folks: the federal government has launched a (methodologically flawed) survey on "the Cultural Sector's readiness for Artificial Intelligence". If you're ready to resist or refuse genAI, here's your chance to let them know. pch.research-recherche.ca/f/s.aspx?lan...

I want people to understand the full impact of the devastation that First Nations in Canada are facing. It's NOT just that people and wildlife are losing their homes...it's the history that is being lost for generations to come.

Going on 36 hours holed up in my bedroom with an air purifier trying not to hack my lungs out. And that’s nothing to the folks who’ve lost homes. Feeling angry today.

Mark Carney@mark-carney.bsky.social

The world wants to do more with Canada. Our MOU with Alberta will unlock those opportunities in energy — and create lasting benefits for Canadians.

I'm so angry this is our every summer now -watching Canada burn, watching ecosystems die and homes burn, & we just keep digging oil out of the ground. Our politicians keep spending public dollars on the oil industry; subsidies, more pipelines, sending our clean energy to run LNG plants. Insanity.
