great advice, all the way down

today is my 40th birthday. to toot my own horn a bit, I'm the happiest, healthiest, and most successful I've ever been, so I'm going to indulge myself and do one of those "40 things that made me who I am" threads so buckle up (or mute me for the next little bit 😆)

@anthropic.com Claude is a real live saver in more ways than one. I’ve used it for many things for programming but wasn’t feeling right and described my symptoms to Claude. I was seen three minutes after I walked into the hospital. If it wasn’t for this message in all caps I would not have gone.

Currently on the hunt for a fast local text to speech model that supports streaming in text and streaming out audio, any one have any suggestions? currently testing coqui TTS which is pretty decent

Best part about WFH is the pillow I can keep next to my desk to scream into.

I think this will be great for emulators to show and hide controls. What else would yall use it for?

TIL about the DevicePosture API Useful to know from JS/CSS if a device is folded: "folded" | "continuous" W3C just moved this to Candidate Recommendation

Working on AI agents is wild. We tricked rocks into thinking to make processors, cohered the totality of human knowledge, gave it a voice, and now need psychology to make it listen. Half the people who work on it can barely talk to each other, yet they're supposed to teach it morals???

I hope that the methods that win out in the end enable each person to do mor AI but work in harmony together. iving factor of AutoGPT as it's built. The future depends on us deciding that AI shouldn’t replace humans or humans with AI but work in harmony together.

I know that’s a lofty goal, and many eagerly seek to replace people, but I think that’s a fool’s errand. An effort can be made to integrate new “ai/beings/GPTs” (lmk if Claude tells you their pronouns) without replacing people. I know that many fear it, and I do, too.

In the past, this would be a role filled by mentors and teachers. It’s soul-crushing to see it replaced, but in others, it’s inspiring. Everyone **could** get the best teacher for them, no matter their income level, with open-source. The rise of Chat models that can do this is only beginning.

I like to think of this as the democratization of AI and its abilities. I learned a lot about circuit design the other day from Claude (an AI made by Anthropic) and will now attempt to make my circuit boards. I know it won’t be perfect, but I’ve learned the principles that will drive it to success.

This may seem like an incredible waste of time but I think there’s merit in it for open source (even if the roads that got us here were paved with ruin) There is value to having someone who is able to 24/7 challenge your ideas, teach you new things, and help you grow

Where are the deep tech people here? I don’t want to hear about the latest product launch, I want to hear about 1.6% optimizations on small hotspots of code that are called 3000000 times a year saving years of compute time

I am so completely over the idea of social media being a place where cruelty just happens. it’s awful for people. it makes us cruel
