I hiked the AT, rode the Tour Divide, and paddled the Mississippi. I spend the rest of my time trying to save democracy.

Y'all, the multiple cities and municipalities near me have voted to remove Flock cameras in the past few weeks, including the 2 that I used to do most of my shopping and dining in. I am so happy right now and I feel an oppressive weight beginning to lift.

Super frustrating to buy a fancy new soldering station but can't use it yet because it doesn't come with tips and I couldn't order them from the same supplier. Come on Hakko, include a basic tip with new irons!

Lol. If you take too long to poop, it will literally just open the door on you. Why can't they just have normal bathrooms and not be weird about it?

17 new public bathrooms. Across all five boroughs. Because you can’t wait — and you shouldn’t have to.

Seen on a bike listing: "This bike is amazing but I currently have 5 Surlys and my wife thinks I might need help. No pedals, brand new fat paw grips." Dear friend, your wife is probably right. It seems like you love bikes and could probably use a friend to help weigh pros/cons on your next trip.

My mom tries not to be overtly political and mostly expresses disappointment, but the Lake Ontario thing made her angry like nothing else. My sister mentioned that @mapquest.com wasn't changing the name and she downloaded it on the spot. Tech companies are burning their reputations.

Confession: I work a bingo and usually when the old ladies complain that the AC is too cold I will just walk over to the thermostat and pretend to push it. Occasionally I even realize the temp is too high and turn it down.

Some people hate cars so much that they are cheering on the surveillance state as fascism tightens its grip. We don't need government microphones in the form of "noise cameras". I say this as someone living next to a bar in the land of trucks and Harleys without mufflers.

Love this. Didn't know they were still around. Will probably start shifting away from Google Maps to this.

We're not changing the name of Lake Ontario. Name it whatever you want at your leisure: https://gulfof.mapquest.com/lakeontario (tag us so we can see your work 🙂)

I promised myself I'd never donate to another federal campaign because of the amount of spam I got, but if he's speaking out against Flock cameras I guess I'll break promises.

Does it ever feel like you're in a cage being watched? Well, you are. By Flock cameras, thanks to Mike Rogers.

NEW: Flock has said for years that its cameras "cannot track individuals." We found the code for its new AI tool. It's preloaded w/ prompts like "Find me witness" & "find relatives." One tracks visitors of multiple hotels, another if you visit banks after midnight. www.wired.com/story/flock-...

Yesterday we informed our 8yo that her one of her great grandmothers was a Cubs fan. “The one I was named after?” “Yes.” “Is it too late to change my name?” Brutal. Inspiring.

I know everything feels terrible and doomy but I've been working on surveillance issues for most of my adult life and I have never seen so much energy, momentum, and concrete VICTORIES happening as what we are seeing right now on Flock cameras and facial recognition in venues. Keep. Going.

Last night I saw a family of 7 out on a bike tour. They had a 5 seater tandem bike! The other two were on a regular 2 seater tandem. The big one was over 15 feet long.

I was looking at taking the Amtrak to Chicago. I'm picking out the first leg and it's $70. I'm like ok, that's only a tad more than gas, and not unreasonably slower than driving. Then I picked the second leg and realized it was $70 for one way. Lol, nope. I'm not paying 3x the money to go slower.

From coast to coast, people are demanding their local leaders cut ties with Flock — and are winning.

PRIVACY WIN: One hour ago, South Kingstown Town Council voted unanimously to cancel their contract with Flock Safety!

I guess she's been in Washington for so long that she forgot Michiganders often consider ourselves the best coast. I've never heard a Michigander talk like that either, so I'm not sure how anyone is making fun of the rest of us.

"Cool kids on the Internet. They're doing the cool kid chatter. Some of 'em might be the coastal elites, making fun of how I talk. But let's be real. They're making fun of Michigan. They're thinking they're better than us. Their jokes, their criticism, only make me fight harder." -- Haley Stevens

Got an earful today... apparently the antivaxxers think ventilators were killing people in the early days of covid. Also, something about autopsies. I don't even know. Mostly I was thinking about all the coal fly ash we were breathing in that none of them seem concerned about.

The Los Angeles Police Department let its Flock contract expire after an audit revealed that 161 cars were falsely flagged as stolen in a two month span. Mass surveillance doesn't keep us safe. LAPD must permanently cut ties with this tech and other cities must follow suit.

fortune.comLAPD was one of Flock Safety's biggest government customers. Now it’s renegotiating its partnership over ‘serious concerns around civil liberties’ | FortuneThe department recently announced it would not renew its contract due to how Flock collects and shares data.

This is near me and makes me so happy! Congrats to Westland!!!!

Victory in #Westland, MI! 🏆 "Over the past several months, many Westland residents attended meetings, asked questions, shared concerns, and spoke out about privacy, government #surveillance, transparency, and oversight. This is a reminder that resident voices matter" - CM Sampey #deflock #alpr

Owners of Prusa printers can be crazy. They will list their used printers for sale at a higher price than buying a new one. I don't care how great your MK4 prints, I'm not spending $1000 on a used one when I can buy the next generation Core One for the same price.

Theory: Microsoft realized that everything they've been doing the last few years has made their products worse, and someone in the C-suite came to the conclusion that laying everyone off will stop the trend by accomplishing nothing.

I'm not sure why everyone is spreading rumors about Mitch McConnell. It's been reliably reported that he had dinner two nights ago with Chuck Schumer's good friends, the Baileys.

A $3 @mta.info subway fare and some good Q train timing can buy you one hell of a view of the July 4th fireworks and the Brooklyn Bridge light show! Huge shoutout to the train operator for slow rolling over the Manhattan Bridge and the conductor for announcing it.
