As it happens the internet is less shit out here than I thought so I can do a reminder post!

Dropping early over here because on Friday I will be in Wainuiomata teching a folk festival - NEW POD! This episode I talk to @jeremywhitley.bsky.social about wrestling, specifically AEW, specifically the All In in Wembley! Listen here: tinyurl.com/res-rec-96-AEW

The pot-growing basement in "Scarfies" (1999) is not in the iconic flat where the movie is set. This is not that unusual, but the reason I found this out is that I accidentally dated two women sequentially who both lived in that flat at the same time.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

(I split up with the first one before she lived there, and some time afterward got together with the second, who almost immediately moved out of her hall of residence into the flat without knowing that my ex lived there - so purely coincidental but Very Awkward.)

Re-upping this. Election politics are getting gnarly over on the big blue. Facebook, for better or worse (mostly worse), is the most consequential political space we have, so if you're over there, make it count. (The most useful tip for me: the reminder to scroll right past Simeon Brown & co)

It's election time in NZ and Facebook is where lots of voters hang out. So, here's my Facebook Playbook.

The missus has decided to reorganise the pantry, Monty is Very Interested but knows that crossing from lounge into dining room (to get to the pantry in the kitchen) will result in instant banishment.

Obviously the massive swing to the Greens is just great news in and of itself, but let us not forget that in the context of those charts of which parties get the most donations, it's also *fucking hilarious*

Off the back of me having loved The Hobbit as a pretty small kid, my mum tried to read me The Lord Of The Rings and I noped out over Tolkien's description of the Ringwraith in Fellowship

Sleepy Hollow Reviews 🎃🐎@sleepingvillage.bsky.social

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

The term "AI" is part of this. As Cory Doctorow (quoting Riley of Trashfuture) puts it "LLMs are real, AI is fake". LLMs and other kinds of machine learning have a bunch of uses aside from making garbage slop and running chatbots that drive people crazy.

Will Oremus@willoremus.com

feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

I use a bunch of tools for audio and image editing that have some sort of machine learning component (many of which predate the "AI boom" and I consider that quite different from just creating things from whole cloth by prompting.

Trains

#Greens' brilliant $4b rail plan: Overnight sleeper trains from Auckland-Wellington & passenger services between Christchurch & Dunedin, & extending the TeHuia train to Tauranga. Restoring commuter rail gives smaller regions & towns benefit of more travellers stopping www.1news.co.nz/2026/10/03/g...
