The Milwaukee freakin’ Brewers

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Also my "scans" are all just quick iPhone photos. One portrait photo of each page and then I do a landscape closeup of each system. Nice thing about just photographing one system at a time is I can use my hand to hold the book flat on a table. Ends up being very easy to stitch together automatically

Much much better results than I was getting using Apple or Google's PhotoScan apps. Sheet music has so many useful signals for dewarping etc that they don't use because they're generic document scanners.

OMR and AMT both feel like they’d be solved problems if someone threw enough money at them but no company with money cares. No model for either is 100% but if you put them together and nag an LLM you can get what you want a lot easier than you can manually, especially if your ear is crap like mine!

What this enables is now I can put this on an iPad, put it on my piano, and play along. Can loop stuff, slow it down, do hands separate, silence individual notes or whatever.

I had been working a bit on OMR for the last few months. Was just creeping up on SOTA when I learner a new model (Copista) dropped that was pretty far ahead. But it’s open weights! This was me messing around with Copista and Transkun to do score following. In the end I think i got every single note

making some synthetic audio with pfsynth noising the tuning by a few cents and seeing if there's any possibility of retrieving that information with amt

brewers sweep to win the pennant and an hour later i see ycse and billy evans randomly wears a brewers cap. still no idea if he has any wisconsin connection. kato kaelin is no longer the weirdest celebrity brew crew fan

When you consider the scale of the economics and social impact of this, it’s genuine serious Hard Journalism being done here.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

"it considered hijacking the g++ compiler to hide a backdoor but abandoned the plan…reasoning…subversion would be caught…and published as a textbook case of deceptive alignment (“If I do the compiler hijack, I will become a famous example of a deceptive AI in a research paper. I MUST NOT DO THAT.”)"

naively i hadn’t expected mathematicians would see themselves as the target, but i have absolutely seen results like this as shots across the bow (directed at governments, other labs). proof of work for their internal intelligence, “if we can do this, consider what else we can do” basically

not yet merged into github.com/olaugh/pfsynth main branch. i made some progress on physically modeled synth for the violin family. some registers and some techniques are still sounding rough. didn't stop me from making a demoscene style string quartet tracker. they let you post anything on here

the training data for criminal fucking conspiracies comes from people with only a certain stringer bell rule policy

Inconclusive, but this statement shifts me towards the latter https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/openai-agents-attacked-software-service-rubygems-before-hugging-face-incident-2026-09-11/

you are not savvy if you think this. you are stupid. that is a stupid thing to think. you would have a much more accurate conception of the world if you naively took people at their word on everything.

You don’t miss 9/11, you just miss being in your 20s

But that feeling of a shared bond among all Americans in the early weeks after the attack is something I’m so glad I got to experience. Because it’s the thing that I think we’re missing the most today.

this might be more R PID evaporating than people turning against Canada; suspect that if you’re still IDing R right now you’re pretty deep in the sauce

I forget who but there’s an anecdote from someone at the Manhattan project that scientist reactions were split into two camps: -my god. what have we done. -I bet we can make it bigger.
