It’s my birthday today but I’m also a morsel of food trapped in the jaws of the gig economy — so it’s my obligation to remind you all that I’m available for freelance scriptwriting, editing, consulting, journalism, narrative & copywriting work. Portfolio below, RTs appreciated!

Postmode.org is DIY-hosted with WordPress & a Cloudways droplet, and it was a pain in the arse to figure out at first (I was a total beginner to web dev and design, etc.), but I think it was worth it in the long run! Hosting is $13 a month, the domain was cheap, and I've licensed the fonts I use.

Alex Donaldson@apzonerunner.com

The great thing about services like Ghost, Substack etc is how they democratize writing about stuff. But the bad thing is I am incredibly bored of websites running on these things that all look the same

Nothing wrong with using Ghost, IMO, but I just wanted to be off-grid, lean and clean (paid for my fonts, so I don't rely on Adobe WebKit), all-free plugins, and I'm very particular about new ones. The third cost was the theme, but even that was like a 50 quid one time thing, I think.

Ofc it's on you to fix things if they go wrong, but with enough tinkering, you can get to a 'set and forget' place that's comforting. Most themes you buy come with support licenses, too. Crucially, I'm also not pulling mega-traffic on the regular (yet), which is why I can survive on a small droplet!

🚨 Are you an indie developer who's recently received Government funding for your game? I'd love to speak to you about your experience! My DM's are open, but also feel free to email me: 📩 thwaitesannsarah [at] gmail [dot] com Reposts appreciated!

Last word on this is that Biddy Blas is my new favourite Glup Shitto. Love that little guy.

When I left IGN/GN, I vowed to try to give as much work to as many people fresh out of publications as possible during these cuts - but even for a healthy business, the demand/need now is impossible. The future is independent, smaller, & reader-supported. Support the coverage you want to see!

Games media cuts have felt unending for a while, but the mood feels especially grim among indie outlets with the latest wave of layoffs. More than ever, if the game industry values its media, it needs to support them. Buy some advertising, sponsor content, purchase subs. It makes a big difference.

On the topic of supporting independent games media, Postmode is independent and ad-free, and I'd like to keep it that way! You can support the site on Patreon, tip us on Ko-fi, or just subscribe to the newsletter with the links below: patreon.com/c/Postmode ko-fi.com/postmode postmode.substack.com

At Tokyo Game Show, I played Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, then asked Capcom about: • Monster designs they cut • The influence of Exoprimal • Equal Dragon Weapon • Cheese Naan • A second Monster Hunter movie • How PC struggles shaped the Switch 2 port postmode.org/monster-hunt...

Kind of cheating with The Orange Box but we are where we are

Not necessarily my favourite, but 9 games that were massively influential in creating the sicko I am today.

It's good that sites like GameRant are writing breakout news stories drawn from my reporting, but given that Postmode.org is independent and ad-free, would it kill you to drop the original source as a backlink? Literally an ideal hyperlink spot right there. gamerant.com/monster-hunt...

My Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve review is up! Or as I like to call it: The Phantom Plane. I bounced off Ace Combat 7, but this hooked me immediately: pristine controls & jaw-dropping missions — it's a great entry point to Strangereal. postmode.org/ace-combat-8...

Sorry to get real on main, but after losing my hearing, I often end up in negative headspace ruts about my ability to do my job because events and in-person interviews are so much harder and more anxiety-inducing. With that in mind, it means a lot to me to be able to publish something like this!

The best way I can explain it is that listening is now like an exercise for me, an intentional thing that flexes a muscle that can quickly get worn out. It's like learning how to breathe manually. So networking, events, in-person interviews... all Dark Souls shit. But I want to keep doing them!

Are there any other games-industry-related RSS blogs like this one for Thimbleweed Park 2? I know I'm missing a bunch. I grew up after the age of RSS (2010s algorithmic social media hell) and am only now learning how enjoyable it is to set up a feed of curated blogs that hit my email every so often.

I really wanted to love the new Silent Hill, but it falls apart when you run into the monsters. Still worth checking out for the narrative and unique atmosphere regardless, as well as some of the series' hardest puzzles! postmode.org/silent-hill-...

postmode.orgSilent Hill Townfall Review: Great Puzzles, Grating CombatSilent Hill Townfall review: Screen Burn's Scottish spin-off nails its setting and puzzles, but clumsy combat and stealth drag it down.

The way this Townfall captures the iconography of 90s Britain and twists it into an otherworld is mesmerising. The guide dog charity boxes and BT telephone boxes- it's just so meticulous and immersive. But then you have to fight or hide, and the quality gulf hits you like a truck.

I've played all the Silent Hill games; many of them have awkward or frustrating combat & stealth, but they're third-person. Townfall's first-person perspective makes it so much harder to avoid. First SH where I'm not super enthused about playing for more endings :(

Finishing off a games industry event the only way I know how: by becoming gravely ill with conference flu! 🤧 Tokyo Games Show was so cool, though. Even ran into Hideki Kamiya wandering the show floor!

TGS is up there in my industry event rankings for sure. Far better organised than gamescom, easy to get your press pass, great press room and a dedicated press entrance. It has an equivalent to GC’s business zone too with the ICH, only problem is it’s much smaller. Too many apps on the show floor!

Can’t get over how much Dylan Faden looks like Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie in Control Resonant. Truly the first indie rock superhero game… My review: postmode.org/control-reso...

This is probably a good time to mention that I've just got my Tokyo Games Show press pass! If any editors need help covering previews & interviews, I'll be on-site for the first three days of the event. Drop me a message if you need coverage! oloman.carrd.co
