Only running for 2 more days at Soho Place Theatre, but Tao of Glass is an amazing performance.

A man who knows, as Oscar Wilde observed, the price of everything and the value of nothing.

See it if you possibly can - it explores where music comes from, how art is made, who we are deep down. A profoundly thoughtful, heartfelt work with many lovely silly moments. Phelim McDermott is such a warm and engaging performer, with four superb musicians and three terrific puppeteers.

Even more impressive on a second encounter. The precision choreography, the seeming randomness, the unlimited potential of paper and sellotape (representing earth and air, fire and water, a Chinese sage, weather, birds, Philip Glass, Philip Glass's hair, ectoplasm (I think).

went to Tao of Glass at the theatre in Soho: an enjoyable play but I was distracted by also having to serve as a member of The Galactic Council maintaining an uneasy peace among the diverse civilisations of the Universe:

Well, that was fabulous. Outstanding. Tao Of Glass is my first Five Stars, No Notes show of 2026. Perfect performance, impeccable tech, self-aware, cheeky fourth-wall breaking, original Philip Glass score… and there was puppetry. Actually made me glad I was alive to see it.

Never let it be said that a big loud banner on the street doesn’t work: it at least occasionally works on me. Going to this solely because it includes that word I like: OF. Also a very heavily discounted ticket, a mere £15 to me. \o/

Phelim McDermott’s ‘Tao of Glass’ at Soho Place Theatre is fabulous. Featuring the writer and director himself, his meditations on life, death and the music of Philip Glass (whose original music also features) are joyous and moving. Cast and band great too. Runs until 12 September.
