"They can start cutting people's faces up. They can stab someone. They can shoot someone." EXCLUSIVE: Our hidden cameras capture the leader of Turning Point UK organising a fake rally for a foreign government and helping arrange a murder-for-hire with loyalist paramilitaries.

As always, these things come down to choices. Do Ministers want the UK to be prepared? If so, we need to increase the amount we spend on preparedness. It isn't a case of better coordination - you can't coordinate yourself out of a just-in-time economy which prioritises expediency over resilience.

If things are still as they were when I was SCS five years ago, a Deputy Director at least will have had to have signed off this FoI exemption. This should worry us for several reasons:

This to me is a system hunkering down and feeling like it has to do this behind closed doors. Because "people don't understand the issues" and the review will have to grapple with (for example) those who want to politicise the Civil Service.

The problem is, that only emboldens those who want to see the end of an impartial Civil Service built on the principles of Honesty, Integrity, Impartiality and Objectivity. You don't show your integrity by concealing the process for review. As philosopher queen Princess Leia says:

1) Senior Civil Servants are no longer trying to uphold the intent of FoI legislation. S35 is intended to protect the content of policy discussions, not the fact that they are happening. 2) As Gavin suggests, is the CS just asking the "usual suspects" for input?

Very good by Sam. The Euro in/out dynamic will be interesting. If opting out of ERM is basically an open-ended veto, I can't see how the EU could make the Euro a condition of membership. Better to yield the point in negotiation than have the "states rights" point proved in the years after agreement

New post: Burnham has opened the door to a "rejoin" manifesto pledge. The politics make more sense than a lot of people seem to realise. I look at what it would involve at every step from pledge to referendum. There are significant barriers but it can be done. samf.substack.com/p/the-route-...

1/ In my experience, there are a very small number of officials at NIO who understand the dynamics of parading. They work incredibly hard behind the scenes to ensure the Secretary of State is well-briefed and, most importantly, no one on any side gets any surprises. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukDrumcree: Orange Order parade dispute continues as main players hold talksA controversial march was due to take place on Sunday morning but was blocked by protesters on the mainly-nationalist Garvaghy Road.

2/ Honestly not sure what has happened. Are that team no longer in place? Have they fundamentally misread the communities? Is Secretary of State not listening? (Most unlikely) Is there some kind of grand strategy? Something has gone seriously wrong and will take hard work to improve it from here.

3/ For English follows thinking "how big a deal is this", this short read is good - my (non-expert) view is this is at least as febrile an issue as Cash-for-Ash was in 2016, and that collapsed the NI Executive for three years. sluggerotoole.com/2026/09/28/w...

I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

Honestly, Science Ministers keep falling into this trap. While I think it is inexcusable and we're right to be annoyed that this keeps happening, we really ought to stop calling them "Science Minister" and, you know, actually give it a title which describes what it actually is supposed to be!

The removal of Olly Robbins was a travesty which deprived the FCDO of the kind of leader it needed during a period of upheval. Talk about silver linings, though - Lindy Cameron is part of the small cadre of genuinely top quality officials in Whitehall www.ft.com/content/360d...

If Foreign Sec is keen to pursue climate policies plus an EU role, I would love to see FCDO pushing for UK to participate in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. We have capabilities to offer, and this summer shows we may need its support in future. www.politico.eu/article/ed-m...

I'd put this into the "Spreadsheet Phil" category of DefSec appointments. Streeting has shown he is willing to take on a big, very expensive bureaucracy and - whether you agree with the decisions or not - make decisions on efficiencies. With Healey as CX this is clearly about defence procurement.

Forget about DSIT/DBIST/DCMS etc - this is the MoG change that will really matter, and will have massive ramifications whether done well or badly

Major machinery of govt changes including - finally! - the creation of an Office for the Prime Minister and Cabinet Long overdue and excellent news that the Burnham govt has grasped this nettle questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-stat...

Science and innovation were within BIS, formed in 2009 under Brown. I have to say I'm less worried about the DSIT change than most. I may well be proved wrong but research did pretty well in the 2010s overall. Tech policy may be a different kettle of fish though, I admit.

Rachel Coldicutt@rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social

Well so long DSIT. That is a hell of a swing - might seem like a junior dept of little consequence from within govt, but putting science and innovation in with business is a pretty solid Tory move. One can only hope all the non-innovative tech, that keeps everything ticking over, gets a home too.
