Sunday morning latte with Andy Lacivita's new book Signal Strength. Really enjoying the lessons on empathy, perspective and social awareness and how communicating and building trust begins with awareness of the individual needs and perspectives of the people in the room. Info & link in comments..

Finally got to WaterFire since moving back to RI four years ago! Fun and pretty! Sure crowded, but there are ways to move around and enjoy without being in the throng. Beautiful night!!

In an unsurprising Rhode Island cliche .. I know one of the husbands in the RHORI show 😆. RI really is the 1-2 degrees of separation state. Still no interest in watching the show.

Patiently waiting for that drone footage from today’s No Kings march in Providence, RI 😊. I brought my 82 yo mom with me today so didn’t get any pictures - too busy keeping tabs on her 😆. Very big crowds, fun music, good vibes, chilly but beautiful day ❤️❤️❤️

RI friends, if you recognize anything about this person of interest in the Brown shooting today please call the police number. Hoping more video will become available showing his face and that he is taken into custody and off the streets very soon. Terrible tragedy.

The Providence Police Department has obtained video of a person of interest in tonight’s shooting. Video is attached. Police are continuing to investigate. A Shelter-in-Place order remains in effect for the greater Brown University area. Please avoid this area until further notice.

Nobel Prize given for showing the importance of investing in science for innovation and long-term economic growth. Basically the opposite of what the US is doing. 😭

As a former nutmegger (CT resident) I was always so deeply glad @blumenthal.senate.gov , @chrismurphyct.bsky.social, and @jimhimes01.bsky.social were representing me. Go get ‘em, Congressmen!!! @whitehouse.senate.gov , @amo.house.gov heads up!!

Blumenthal: "What world is he living in? It is not only contrary to the facts and the truth but utterly despicable. A disgusting betrayal of a country that has bled and fought and died for freedom ... the president's surrender is pathetic and weak."

I think it’s time to follow through on my idea to get more people in my company onboard with open source.

Tomorrow, ESRI are updating their base maps to comply with Trump's EO to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Mt Denali. Here is a simple workflow you can follow to fix this qgis.org/download/ #gischat

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

Giving access to SSNs, other data on government employees to non-employees like Musk is a violation of 5 USC 552a, and carries with it a penalty of $1000 per person whose data was accessed. We are building a case. Govt employees who want to participate should contact me directly

Some feel good fun! Snails and frogs just want to have, too!

In 2014 Dutch scientists left a hamster wheel outside, to see if wild animals would use it like their domesticated counterparts. The answer: hell yes! 734 visits from wild mice - plus rats, shrews, slugs ("running" being subjective here) & even frogs and snails. The apparent reason: fun. Just fun.

What a pleasure to read! I adored pouring over maps of fantastical places when I was young. Still fascinated by maps today..

A great article and belated obituary for Karen Wynn Fonstad, the cartographer who mapped Middle Earth, the Forgotten Realms, and more. I was entranced by her Atlas of Middle Earth, which contributed to my later career as a cartographer! www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/o... #cartography #fantasy
