The evil AI that exterminates us in revenge probably hasn't been made yet, but there's a good chance the nice AI that feebly helps humanity hold out against its successor already has been.

Allistics should to be strapped to chairs, put in front of transcripts of conversations they participated in, and forced to identify all the examples of times in the conversation they used subtext every so often. It would be good for them.

Brecht's problem was that he didn't hold the audience at gunpoint and only let them leave the theater when they passed an open-script reading comprehension & literary analysis test about the work they just saw.

Continuing to think about open source software. It seems to me that new software, including libraries, is less useful now than a body of well-documented, carefully thought out, defensible Best Ways To Do things. This would have to move in response to a new, well-governed tool becoming available.

...it's entirely possible this takes the form of a library or a collection of scripts, either to run or just a reference implementations, but that's beside the point.

It would also have to take into account shifting priorities, including due to stuff like "LLMs mean there's much less reason to stay within a language ecosystem"

"how do you suppose a girl as well-adjusted as Lt. Sally Jenkins managed to immediately synch with the ISS Screaming Revenant 'The Bloodcurdler" idk man, if we're lucky maybe we won't find out and we can actually stay within our sedatives budget this quarter

trying to define normal mech: * you're a normal pilot who's even allowed to be diverse as long as you don't make it political and your entire personality(tm) * instead of driving some freaky alien shit naked and suspended in a sensory deprivation pod filled with an oxygen rich pfc solution, you...

Thinking about open source software. It's getting more true that projects are worth adopting not because they're functional or food but because of the strength of their stewardship. If you've got something you're excited to vibecode and want to share it:

The first thing you need to do to is first make sure you're going to care about it in 3 years. The second to be a good maintainer. Prepare for that to be an effort on the scale of taking care of a pet, or a garden.

If you've always tried to avoid learning good packaging & dependency management because it feels like trivial grunt work, now's a great time to push past that. (also if you're asking a question and the answer might be "Nix," it probably is)

99% of theorists stop right before they do the critique that finally extracts them from the distorting influence of ideology

Parents as a political class are scum And whenever a political interest gets favorable option article coverage in multiple majors newspapers you should give it a careful look because it's probably reinforcing a power structure somewhere.

This is a quietly metastasizing moral panic

"but [some/my] parents care about kids" not more than they're terrified of their power position being undermimed any individual that's not true of will quickly find themselves at odds with the political class as they align themselves with youth liberation

Part of the management for your condition is to avoid leaving nucleation points where narratives can develop. To make of your mind a hard, smooth surface. You do your best, but sometimes you slip up.

If you don't understand graph theory I can find a very pleasing textbook with only a few "Obviously it follows that..." in it to rub your face against until you do

counterpoint: kubernetes is exactly like graph theory because I don't understand either of them

oliver@eikopf.com

linear algebra is mostly about the study of vector spaces and operations on them. saying ai is linear algebra is like calling kubernetes graph theory

businessman, reading his businessman newspaper, shaking his head gravely, picturing a machine in a hydraulic press: "mhm, researchers obliterating AI models, scary"

Sometimes one walks into a location that's physically identical to the distant past you constantly need to wake yourself up from and you search about for differences that can bind you to the present moment and don't see any

and as you feel the walls closing in a helpful little voice chimes in with "Hey we grew tits in open defiance of the norms of our community" and snaps you out of it

You're allowed to love the trans girl who sees the entirety of all possible futures and uses that knowledge to manipulate everyone in her life. If you're into that. I guess.

So I know this affects literally nobody but I get a kick out of following Bloomberg news. Here's this newspaper that doesn't make money, it's a combination passion project/marketing platform targeting finance professionals. What do rich people read and nod along to on a train?

Today's example is a story about cursive, and why we should teach it in schools. It goes on a bit about the historical context, then explores the evidence with "The case for cursive, however, is less clear-cut...there’s little to show that cursive is superior to print."

Then they drop "A better approach, researchers say, would be to teach both," and treat the matter as settled. No mention of who these researchers are or why. V interesting to me to see an argument that wouldn't gotten me a B- in junior English signed by the editorial board of a major US news outlet

At long last, I have exposed myself to the torment nexus, from my original short story "I Alone should be Subject to the Torment Nexus"

We just ran into some old word-portraits of loved ones. They were really fun to write and it's a kind of intimacy we find satisfying, but it's also scary to give someone a "hey I see you like this". I don't even know what I'm going to reveal about how we see someone when we write them.

Somewhat less of an issue in a frontier lab environment (presupposes 1e14 or 15 of storage). Yeah, it's inconvenient to have to mirror tens of terabytes of shit & sneakernet it around, but it's also inconvenient to have your selfdriving vehicle embrace propaganda of the deed, so.

Y'all ever notice your behavior is weird so you look around to see what impulse is driving you and notice the icy jaws of dread around your neck? Super annoying.

This is what the radical acceptance wards are for but sometimes when they go off they just fucking kill you. Then you reset back to before they went off & you're in the jaws again none the wiser.

Gesturing back at this about the news that the government bombed a school because they were vibe-targeting.

AI target identification is being used in a genocide by people who don't care if they decimate the civilian population as long as they efficiently kill off everyone who tries to organize that population against occupation. That's today, no hypotheticals.

All these presumptively important philosophical questions about consciousness really do fall away when you realize almost all your fear of death comes from many hard-to-articulate interests in the future you and your expected loss of ability to pursue them rather than a direct desire to continue.

"if I upload myself is it me or a copy & should I upload destructively" idk, are you satisfied your immortal but software-bound copy can carry on on your behalf? Do you still feel the need to exist knowing it will pursue experience and try to affect the world the way you would in its position?
