Travis Turner has no other match, as a speaker, to anyone else in the Ruby world. I think he might be outmatched outside the Ruby world too. Anyway, one of my favourite speakers of all time.

Gruber and others seem to be evaluating the Duo as an iPhone. Buttons in the wrong place, weird one-handed operation… I’d like to see if someone else will review it as the first real, top-grade, _pocketable computer_.

Hey #Ottawa. If you're a business owner or early in your #startup idea, and the following questions are on your mind, I'm running a workshop next Tuesday Oct 27 at 6pm. - Should every conversation be about sales? - What causes people to buy after a back-and-forth? www.meetup.com/founders-lab...

I'm overjoyed to hear @mark-carney.bsky.social visibly improving his French at a fast pace. It's no easy task, and it's not a cheap trick for a politician to pull this off. When's the last time this pace of improvement has occurred over the tenure of a notable statesman in Canada? It's remarkable.

You want to add AI to your app. Consider that AI is both an efficiency innovation and an empowering innovation. Efficiency innovation tries to say "hey my app is worthwhile because you can do more, more quickly". But they reply: "why not use the AI directly?" 💥 Make new apps 💥

"It's for everyone". That was the positioning mistake then, still a mistake now. "Everyone" = no one in particular. When you get the first output from an LLM, remember that it was trained to please everyone, so no one in particular. So by default, LLM output needs adjusting.

You might want to build a perfect product, but rare are the people in search of hypothetical perfection. Instead, people move from one "good enough" to another "good enough". Until it becomes an "enough is enough". That's when you suggest your product. everyonewantsprogress.com/0140-good-en...

everyonewantsprogress.comGood Enough, MisunderstoodEnthusiasm for our product is normal. We know its features, we know its quality. But our main competitor is the idea of good enough, and we don’t seem to understand it too well.

Had a great time at @xoruby.com Montreal yesterday! Good presentations and conversations, and when I got home I still got to read my son a bedtime story 😄 (he was doing his best to delay things 🙈)

See you in Montreal this Saturday

XO Ruby@xoruby.com

Montréal we're bringing you a conference with no flights, no hotel and no four-figure ticket. XO Ruby Montréal, this Sat Oct 17: 8 talks, one track, $138CAD, and lunch money in your pocket. Lineup includes a former Rails core member and the creator of Thin. xoruby.com/event/montreal

If you feel at risk, you'll use generative tools liberally. But if you have something to gain, you might do the opposite of others. You'll use AI here, but not there. You'll write your own posts, speak in your voice, take your time. It's time for culture. everyonewantsprogress.com/0139-disrupt...

Most depressions are best interpreted as immigrations. Leaving a familiar place behind, figuring out the new reality in this new place. A friend, who immigrated here, told me that the majority of immigrants go through a depression. It made me realize the normalcy of depression. It's a passage.

To the people saying "No one is going to vibe code their own CRM", you're 100% wrong. We are seeing that as a cancellation reason a few times per month, and we have extremely low-tech customers. Not saying SaaS is going away, but to act like AI won't replace some of it is silly.

Control rooms, spreadsheets, dense UIs, architecture, intricate details found in room design... we like them for the same reason we like nature, for the same reason we need occasional "forest bathing". FWIW, I hope VR tech will allow us to be overwhelmed by details in an additional way.

A large collection of amazing photos of old control rooms from nuclear plants, dams, power stations, etc. So many little details in all of these photos to pore over. [kottke.org]

Probably the most powerful idea in marketing is the idea of enrolment. People enrolling on an idea, on telling others, on trying what you're offering. That almost all devs have enrolled in the gamble of AI delegation is holy-smokes level of enrolment. Just incredible.

Efficiency is all the rage these days. But remember that efficiency is cheap innovation. There other types of innovation, which create prosperity in other ways, and it's our job to understand buyers and their need for progress, to find those other types of innovation.

I don't write a lot of code by hand anymore, but I still read a lot of it. I'm still very happy that everything is in Ruby 👍

I visited Jimbōchō today, a neighborhood that’s home to more than 100 used bookstores. Here are four of my favorite shops, including two that specialize in books on art, design, photography, fashion, and architecture. [kottke.org]

Listening to a podcast and hearing the tell-tale claudisms: "Those receipts come due" "Are load-bearing" And now I’m just not sure anymore if I’m listening to a real conversation or not.

If you know a Rubyist in Montréal that you think should be on stage at XO Ruby on Oct 17, please tag them in the comments, or send me a note. We're looking for our next speakers, and especially if you're underrepresented in tech and have a talk idea, please reach out.

Bonjour Montréal 👋 We're coming to town this October 17! Who should speak at the conference? We’re looking for new voices. Maybe someone who dives into a deep part of a domain that Ruby helped solve, someone who has a story to tell that’ll make us think about our AI age, ...

These two badges of honour don’t hit the same: "I haven’t written a line of code since November" "I haven’t written a line of article text since November" One of them is excusable, the other one smells. We’re just getting acquainted with this stuff.
