Working with this amazing Farmer-led Landscape Recovery collaboration of so many individual farmers with a vision to deliver evidence-based habitats at landscape-scale has been uplifting & gives me optimism for a better future 🌍 #Biodiversity

Breckland Farmers Wildlife Network@brecksfarmerswn.bsky.social

The Breckland Farmers Wildlife Network is a farmer-led group. We came together 12 years ago to collaborate on creating a landscape scale wildlife network in the Brecks. We're very proud to now have 58 members and cover over 50,000ha. Visit brecklandfarmlerswildlifenetwork.org.uk to find out more

Scary shit. As a clarion alarm of really even scarier shit to come if we flip all the tipping points. But we still have time to change track. Believe in hope, commit to action

Breaking News! Code: y-Axis Alert! Yesterday's Nino 3.4 preliminary sea-surface temperature anomaly set a new record high, at 3.48°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. To clearly show this anomaly, the y-axis max was raised to 4.0°C. Attention historians: this is gobsmackingly bananas.

Fascinating story of how this aspect of Nightjar ecology was unraveled : warmer ashpalt rather than gravel roads help in digesting prey, especially important on a full moon! #ornithology

temperature anomalies 1982-2026. We are now in unprecedented scary shit territory - bottom right of the chart

Here are the latest daily color stripes for the Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly. Time to update the color bar ... going from black through bright pink and then to?

Great thread and debate. land sparing/sharing, rewilding must be balanced with farming production while reducing food import dependency to support national resilience. Dietary shift has to be a big part of this

Call out lifeless countryside? "Farmer bashing" Call out deadzone tree plantations? "You hate foresters" Call out our empty seas? "You're attacking fishermen" Call out our trashed National Parks? "You're denigrating park rangers" This is how they try to shut down any dissent to nature's dying.

Please can we finally stop using artificial nests in studies of #nest #predation A meta-analysis again confirms artificial nest studies inflate nest loss rates & bias understanding of which predators are responsible- corvids over-represented -again. #ornithology

Brilliant innovation particularly for duck & wildfowl species that nest in deep herbaceous vegetation where nest finding and monitoring are both tricky and can compromise the outcome.

Brilliant thread from @philipamies.eurosky.social on the historical class element of exclusion from hunting. Still relevant today and part of why UK deer numbers continue to grow.

Philip Amies@philipamies.eurosky.social

I thought of deer in Britain (& UK), a wild meat, perhaps nobody depends on it in UK, but the cull is important on environmental grounds and a good source of food. www.cell.com/current-biol...

We're now on day 83 of record breaking daily global sea-surface temperatures. There's still an outside chance that this year could break the all-time daily record set back on April 24, 2024. The Climate Casino is taking the Over.

Naturally colonised Night Heron, Little Egret, Great Egret and Crane alongside resident Grey Heron are not enough, apparently, and cultural connections mean we should introduce another generalist predator into the last fragile refuges for Amphibians & reptiles. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Of 19 putative Holocene White Stork archaeological remains discussed here, 13 lack a primary source reference or any detail. And it still includes the zoo specimen from Winchester! But interesting to see how sparse evidence is for other large waterbirds petemrcooper.substack.com/p/to-stork-o...

Terrible this illegal persecution continues, but encouraging that the conservation release org. is chaired by a farmer, and the eagle was saved by gamekeepers.

Nest protection an emergency room conservation intervention that is unlikely to be scalable to reverse declines, but may prevent local extinction and thus warranted. Ultimately we need to stop giving generalists like Great-spotted Woodpeckers a leg up by feeding them #Ornithology

Wild Horizons@wildhorizons.bsky.social

The last Willow Tit nest of the season now fledged, successfully protected from Great Spotted Woodpecker predation. No GSW predation in protected nests this year, in stark contrast to 100% predation rate by GSW in unprotected nests. Very promising results.
