just bring back tontines, who gives a shit anymore

Somehow things that would have been a background gag in a Verhoeven movie are now just real

I love that even in the scary made-up scenario, nobody gets hurt and actually it’s fine. this is reflective of reality most of the time! I wonder why she didn’t do a realistic scenario about cars instead? 🤔

Speaker Julie Menin@speakermenin.bsky.social

Every New Yorker deserves to move around our city freely and safely, regardless of how they get around. That’s why the NYC Council is launching a comprehensive review of where existing laws can be stronger enforced, and what additional solutions are needed to keep New Yorkers safe.

average intelligence level of an opinion piece in a major paper. I get why they publish these but I don’t get why the writers aren’t embarrassed to be a part of it.

USA TODAY Opinion@usatodayopinion.usatoday.com

Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use.

person who makes like 65k: here’s why all poor people should be ground up and used as construction material for mansions

It doesn’t even seem like companies care about more profit. CEOs resent that they need high-skill laborers who have leverage and want to change that, no matter the cost.

Arinn Dembo@erinys.bsky.social

While AI consistently underperforms and provides inferior outcomes to skilled human labor…inferior outcomes are ALWAYS ACCEPTABLE if they allow more profit. Eg: Americans don’t eat fresh bread that has been baked by human hands. They think that stale, flavorless crap in a plastic bag IS real bread.

talking of media literacy, did you know that the nyt often solicits specific opinion pieces from specific people? do you think that maybe when a publication repeatedly seeks out and pays to publish the same opinions, that might reflect their values in some fashion?

Jill Filipovic@jillfilipovic.bsky.social

Not including this person's handle because I don't want to start a big pile-on but there is such a deep media literacy problem on the left. "The New York Times" is not "supporting" any of the things linked; individual writers on their *opinion* pages are making the case for these positions.

I learned about a good one recently from @scriptingjapan.bsky.social. an anime character is hit with “ぬるぽ”, to see if they’re extremely online and they reflexively give the response, “ガッ”. it’s translated as epic/fail, which has nothing to do with the original meaning, but has the same sentiment.

Translation is a delicate work that requires deep knowledge of both languages. Nuances and subtleties—two aspects of writing AIs are notoriously terrible at—can be lost or deranged if not carefully considered during the translation process.

lower right bracket is insanely competitive this year, looking forward to some close match-ups.

Y☼TƎ 𓃥@yotecoyote.art

hi, if you use twitter - REMOVE LITERALLY EVERY APP THAT FUCKS WITH THE API. everyone i know who has used oldtwitter or tweetdeck has been COMPLETELY nuked last night. that's years of artwork, private posts, interactions with friends, etc. go to >apps and REVOKE /ANY/ third party app.

I very sincerely respect Kat and her position on this, but just for the avoidance of any doubt: I am coming at this from the position that every ChatGPT user is the problem.

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social

I’m not coming at this from the position that every ChatGPT user or function of the technology is the problem but that the specific intersection of the Trump administration, the people leading this industry, and all the complicit institutions are going to make our collective lives worse and worser

The first “amazed by chatgpt” story I remember is a person bragging about how it helped them program a “snake” game. Ah, cool, I just cloned one of the 5,000 snake game repos on Github. It took 5 seconds, and now we both have a codebase we don’t understand and don’t need.

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

People think they have amazing stories about ChatGPT. And they tell them all the time. You just don’t register them as amazing if you are a normal ish adult human being because it’s mid shit like, “it told me to eat brisket!” or “it wrote twenty emails no one wants!”

every time someone replies questioning this guy’s numbers, he blocks them and then makes progressively madder subskeets about it. seems like healthy behavior.

there are no rhyming words in rough, bough, through, though, slough, and two “th” sounds. good luck, learners

individual voters voting when they weren’t allowed to isn’t real. it has never changed an election outcome. Pretending this is anything besides voter suppression is pathetic. stop being a coward and just say you hate poor people.

Congressman Jared Golden@golden.house.gov

🧵 There are a lot of misleading claims out there about the SAVE Act. Let me set the record straight: I voted for the SAVE Act for the simple reason that American elections are for Americans. Requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote is common sense.

really enjoying the comments from people who think this is a generic complaint about gatekeeping and not a good joke.
