Another person has died in ICE custody — this is the 28th known death this year. The cruelty of this rogue agency is beyond unconscionable. Abolish ICE.

I remember Alan Freeman cueing SotS, which opens with the appropriate oceanic sound effects. I was waiting for a loud splash as the titular goat made its appearance, but no. No sense of humour, these proggies.

Was it for Land of Make Believe or Song of the Seagoat?

The Board of Deputies boldly continue their campaign to drain the term antisemitism of all meaning. I’m hoping that at some point, someone, somewhere is going to realise this isn’t the best idea in the world. 😬

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

The “I mean, this is not remotely fucking sustainable, tell me I’m wrong, you can’t, can you?” approach remains under-used.

Microsoft, which at least on some level knows that consumer software is *supposed to do a thing*, getting eaten from the inside by the Outsource Your Brain software. I mean it’s remarkable, really.

Unrelatedly, I really like how easy Time Machine makes it to keep backups, and to restore from backups – even to restore an individual file to a version before a catastrophic change.

Just blamed Margaret Thatcher for something, which felt appropriate (obviously) but also a bit off for me, not really my style. Feeling the need to get back to my old stamping ground.

So it's satisfying (unless you're the target) to load antisemitism onto the Greens, just as – at the risk of sounding pious – it was satisfying to load Islamophobia onto Reform. Where's racism? Over there! We can point to it!

Which is also why the only correct answer to accusations of Left antisemitism – "both majority British culture and contemporary British Asian culture are susceptible to antisemitism, and we as political opponents of Israel need to take care not to reproduce antisemitic tropes" – will never be heard.

If racism's an undesirable but culturally ingrained attitude reflecting historic patterns of exploitation, anyone saying "I'm not a racist but..." can be answered with "Well, you probably are, a bit. Lots of people are." If racism's a career- and friendship-ending character flaw, that's unthinkable.

This in turn feeds into scapegoating. We know there is racism out there, because (gestures at world in general). We also know that *I'm* not a racist, and *you're* not, and basically anyone we don't want to anathematise.

If, as a product of the 60s or 70s, you've ever braced yourself to have the Well, Different People Look Different conversation with your kids, then realised they literally don't know what the issue might be or why you apparently care about it, thank the Public Sector Equality Duty.

The problem with making racism a red-card offence, though, is that it also makes it a highly serious character flaw – something nobody wants to acknowledge in themselves, or indeed in anyone other than their enemies.

Reflecting on the Zionism is Racism brouhaha, and the shocking ease with which the "antisemitism" banhammer could be brought down on the Green Party of E+W, I think Tony Blair has to bear some of the blame.

New Labour did a lot for anti-racism in Britain, most importantly through the Public Sector Equality Duty (introduced in 2000). If public and quasi-public bodies – all of them – are under a positive duty to encourage good relations with and between minority groups, that's going to have an effect.

Glad I'm Retired Dept: "Before I share this week’s update, I want to thank you personally for the commitment, care and professionalism you continue to demonstrate every day." This is not normal management behaviour; they only do it when they're in distress.

"I know recent months have been challenging, and I acknowledge the additional pressures many of you continue to face" Blimey. Things are worse than I thought.

"I am incredibly grateful for your continued support, and I want you to know that the very real and tremendous efforts of academic and professional services colleagues are recognised and greatly valued" Not my place of course, but wasn't there a pay claim knocking around somewhere?

Dems like Buttigieg are trying to recuperate the energy people have fighting Trump back into support for the Dems - and *that's a good thing*, because they can only credibly do that by appropriating parts of the tactical and ideological repertoire of the active Left.

"There's zero difference between Pete Buttigieg and Donald Trump" is one of those takes that sounds knowledgeable and spicy but it's actually just stupid.

It's certainly much better than – and (this is the crucial point which people seem weirdly ready to overlook) very different from – the alternative, which is being denounced, anathematised and outlawed by the institutional (centre)-Left.

Building a social subject capable of directly making transformative gains through class self-activity is a great idea, but in the short term being poached, appropriated, recuperated and generally sold out by the institutional (centre-)Left is actually a really good outcome.

Aberfan was a thing you were told about, growing up in Wales in the Seventies, but with no real context. The older you get, the more you learn, and the more you learn, the angrier you get. Working class lives treated as expendable. Same as Senghenydd. No Health & Safety for the poor. R.I.P. the 144.
