For those who could not make it, here is a video of Jean-Christophe Cloutier's lively presentation about his new book BIG AMERICAN WRITER: THE BILINGUAL JACK KEROUAC and his conversation w/ Brent Hayes Edwards. tinyurl.com/yzb5cwvb @columbiaup.bsky.social

tinyurl.comBig American Writer: The Bilingual Jack Kerouac | Jean-Christophe Cloutier & Brent Hayes EdwardsWhat happens when we reconsider Jack Kerouac not simply as an iconic American Beat writer, but as a bilingual author shaped by his French-Canadian heritage? In this recorded conversation, Jean-Christophe Cloutier speaks with Brent Hayes Edwards about Big American Writer: The Bilingual Jack Kerouac, a groundbreaking study that explores the formative role of Kerouac’s French-language upbringing, his unpublished French manuscripts, and his practice of self-translation. Born Jean-Louis Kérouac to French-Canadian immigrant parents, Kerouac grew up speaking French in Lowell, Massachusetts. Drawing on extensive archival research, Cloutier reveals how Kerouac’s bilingualism shaped his literary methods and challenges established understandings of his place in North American and world literature. The conversation offers new perspectives on language, identity, translation, and the often-overlooked French-speaking roots of one of America's most celebrated writers. Jean-Christophe Cloutier is Associate Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Big American Writer: The Bilingual Jack Kerouac. Brent Hayes Edwards is the Peng Family Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University and Associate Director of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. This event was co-sponsored by Maison Française and the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. Maison Française, Columbia University, October 14, 2026.
