So little is being done about 38,000 hectares of woodland being destroyed by invasive Rhododendron Ponticum and Cherry Laurel (that for some reason are both still legal to sell in the U.K.?!) that the BBC noticed our event and came along to shine a light on the process. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Normally in storms like this I’m out clearing trees from roads and the towpath. Today I am just hunkering down on my busted boat, facing the wrong way (ass upriver), being tossed about like several tonnes of nurdles in the North Sea. Thankfully baby bring me snacks.

Time for another game of: That’s Not Where I Left My Boat? I fell asleep at my partners house instead of getting back on the boat to guard it, and the little shit who keeps untying my ropes got me again.

I probably wouldn’t have called 999 but I did climb over some security gates and get into Avon & Somerset Fore & Rescue property to get to my boat and figured they wouldn’t mind. They popped a raft in, got a rope on, fixed me up sharp. Good lads!

Remember we didn’t have any money to build the electric rail network that would negate short-haul flights but we can keep giving out endless taxpayer money to subsidise development of engines entirely used for short-haul flights.

Rolls-Royce is closing in on a deal for British taxpayer subsidies of up to £200mn to help fund the development of a new engine for short-haul aircraft, with an agreement potentially being announced as early as next week www.ft.com/content/b0d4...

Currently wondering what message the UK govt thought it was sending by dressing up the Minister for Net Zero in a literal Shell logo.

The wind has begun. I will not be doing client work today I will be having a panic for a few hours whilst Monitoring the Situation.

Tried moving my boat off the river before the storm comes and the engine wouldn’t start. Got it started and the bloody throttle switch is knackered engine is chuffing away but but no move. Moored back up just in time to be announced on BBC Radio Berkshire with “Planet Earth”. 🤣 What a morning.

I know some of you amazing insectologists are going to point out that car parks are brilliant for all sorts of critters and you’re entirely correct. Please do not shout at me I do know the difference, but for the layman this comparison is instructive to the level of destruction eg “green desert”.

Girlfriend: “The front of your boat is out. Is it meant to be?” Me: “Oh it must have come loose. Can you tie it back up?” Her: “How did you even tie it to those railings?” Me: “… what railings?” Narrator: that’s not where Phil moored his boat. His boat was on adventure down the River Avon.

One of the same chaps who helped me chainsaw the fallen tree off my boat back in June answered my cry for help on the boaty group chat and got to Emily as she was scaling pigeon shit covered structures en route to the boat. “Need a hand? I’m from boat buds” Like an angel but useful.

We’re all like 90% sure somebody unmoored me, possibly because they don’t like seeing a narrowboat out their window? Tough titties you weird freak because my friends put me back exactly where you cast me off. Cameras going up. Sleeping with a chainsaw under my pillow until then.

My boat blew away in the storm last night but my amazing girlfriend found it and other boaters helped her reel it in. Anyway I’m in the woods 100mi away with a tracked woodchipper and an army of volunteers to kill rhododendrons and cherry laurel! 🥳

Horribly busy day packing up chainsaws, sharpening machetes, and rabidly deploying PHP security patches, but tomorrow I get to do two of my favourite things. 1. Lead a team of volunteers murdering rhododendron. 2. Bang on about it to the BBC. Friday got binned for weather but tomorrow we fight.

For fucks sake.

The chance to keep global warming below 1.5°C with no overshoot is gone. But urgent action can still limit the overshoot and bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100. Current policies, however, put the 🌎 on course for up to 2.8°C this century. New #EmissionsGap Report: https://ow.ly/SNHX50ZZz8l

Nationalising Thames Water wouldn’t cost £0 but it would be an investment that pays everyone back, unlike giving them another few £bn just to keep being useless extractive bastards.

Tesla Autodriving is so bad a driver recently crashed into a POLICE CAR whilst asleep at the wheel, sending everyone to hospital. The police’s main response was “don’t be asleep on self driving, you gotta constantly pay attention to avoid these things crashing.” Where’s the wheel in this shit.

As someone who gets around on a bicycle, I'm struggling to remember when I gave permission to be a party to this selfish weirdo techbro beta testing.

Every study shows that decarbonising and *doing the things we legally agreed to do but needed Insulate Britain to remind us about* are cheaper for everyone and bring bills down. Cutting “The Green Crap” has only ever put bills *up* short term and long term. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

We can’t get to digital sovrenity through AI. The goal is to move away from the giant US tech monopolies not give them more cash to stick a union flag on the British data centers they’re building all over your local nature reserve.

But AI has *nothing to do* with digital sovereignty. It is *not* load-bearing. All it takes to understand this is a little thought-experiment. Imagine that we removed all the chatbots from Canada, or the UK, or the EU, or the USA. What would fall down? Nothing important.

After a long day of meetings I love popping back to the land for a relaxing evening of upgrading camp then slashing my finger on some rusty metal left laying around by previous landowners and having to one-handed bandage my shit back together. Not a bad bleed out spot.

I don’t think people know just how shady UK tree sponsorship can be when there are organisations whose entire business model is double accounting.

Some organisations I won’t name charge between £1-3. The £1 tree org only funds already funded work. Excuse me? Yep, they fund projects that already have government grants approved or other funding, then just double account that tree to be in their name also. Weird and shit behaviour IMO.

I need to find about ~£10k for @protect.earth before I can get out of bed. Our calls with main funding partner yesterday show they’re not going to be our lifeline. They’re unable to sponsor any trees because £5 is “too expensive” but that’s literally how much it costs. Projects will be scrapped.

One of the £3 orgs are getting that to plant trees sure, but they’re shoving in non-native conifers unprotected which they’ll harvest for timber. That’s not funding wildlife friendly native British woodlands, that’s covering the startup costs of a timber company that has better marketing.

At @protect.earth we only ask for tree sponsorship for ourselves or the landowners we work with when there is literally zero other funding for them otherwise. No government grants available. No local community fund paying for it. The sponsor pays for it. That’s it. shop.protect.earth

Planting trees in the U.K. is expensive. Tree: £1 Stake: £1.50 Guard: £1.20 Munch Mat: £1 Kept back for restocking: 50p Planters when no volunteers around: £1.10 Well that’s £6.30, but not all projects need all that stuff so on average £5 just about squeaks us through. Still not good enough.
